Speaking of this, he also would've been champion if he'd been able to get past Marc Gene in the slowest car of the field in the end of said race. ;)

Hey, Gene, and Badoer until he retired, were in the points on merit. :P

I'll fill in the end of 2016 later, but 2017 so far looks like this:

Australia

1. Mercedes - 25 (+25)
2. Ferrari - 18 (+18)
3. Toro Rosso - 15 (+15)
4. Force India - 12 (+12)
5= Everyone else - 0 (DNF)

China
1. Mercedes - 40 (+15)
2. Ferrari - 36 (+18)
3. Red Bull - 25 (+25)
4. Force India - 24 (+12)
5. Toro Rosso - 15 (DNF)
6. Haas - 10 (+10)
7. Renault - 8 (+8)
8= McLaren - 0 (DNF)
8= Sauber - 0 (DNF)
8= Williams - 0 (DNF)

Bahrain
1. Ferrari - 61 (+25)
2. Mercedes - 58 (+18)
3. Force India - 39 (+15)
4. Red Bull - 25 (DNF)
5. Renault - 20 (+12)
6. Toro Rosso - 15 (DNF)
7. Haas - 10 (DNF)
8= Sauber - 0 (DNF)
8= Williams - 0 (DNF)
10. McLaren - 0 (DNS)

I'll just do the top 10 driver rankings for now, but they're:
1. Vettel - 68pt
2. Hamilton - 64pt
3. Verstappen - 61pt
4. Ricciardo - 54pt
5. Sainz - 41pt
6. Bottas - 40pt
7. Raikkonen - 34pt
8= Grosjean - 24pt
8= Magnussen - 24pt
10. Perez - 22pt

Russia
1. Ferrari - 86 (+25)
2. Mercedes - 76 (+18)
3. Force India - 54 (+15)
4. Red Bull - 25 (DNF)

5. Toro Rosso - 25 (+10)
6. Renault - 20 (DNF)
7. Williams - 12 (+12)
8. Haas - 10 (DNF)
9. Sauber - 8 (+8)
10. McLaren - 0 (DNS)

And the top ten drivers:

1. Massa - 129pt
2. Verstappen - 120pt
3. Vettel - 86pt
4. Hamilton - 83pt
5. Ricciardo - 76pt
6. Bottas - 71pt
7. Raikkonen - 49pt

8. Sainz - 38pt
9. Perez - 35pt
10= Grosjean - 34pt
10= Magnussen - 34pt

You can see that a single FACC finish for Williams at Russia has significantly magnified Massa's points, with his 18pt total multiplied by the ratio of Ferrari's points to Williams (86/12 = 7.167) propelling him into the lead. The more that Stroll fails to finish and the more that Ferrari gets both cars to the end, the greater this gulf will be - though over 20-odd races it should even out.

Sainz is in the unusual situation of having lost FACCA points, as a second dual-finish of the season has changed the multiplier.
After Bahrain, Sainz had 10pt in the real world, while Toro Rosso's multiplier was 61/15 (4.067), making for 41pt.
After Russia, Sainz had 11pt in the real world, but Toro Rosso's multiplier was 86/25 (3.440), making for 38pt.

Again, this should even out over 20 races.

@Famine Maybe I missed something but what is the additional driver championship and how is it calculated?
Firstly you take the car coefficient. This is simply the FACC points of any given car divided into the FACC points of the lead car. Currently they look like this:

Ferrari: 1.000 (86/86)
Mercedes: 1.132 (86/76)
Force India: 1.593 (86/54)
Red Bull: 3.440 (86/25)
Toro Rosso: 3.440 (86/25)
Renault: 4.300 (86/20)
Williams: 7.167 (86/12)
Haas: 8.600 (86/10)
Sauber: 10.750 (86/8)
McLaren: N/A (86/0)

Then multiply by the driver's own real world points haul.

Ah, I see, I see. This does ring a bell; I seem to recall a calculation which showed that point-for-point Ralf Schumacher had the best car in 1999 amongst other hypotheticals.

Interesting to see Williams at the moment being the best point-for-point.

Haven't updated this in a while due to work, but here's the post-Monza points:

1. Mercedes - 252pt (+25)
2. Ferrari - 227pt (+18)
3. Force India - 167pt (+12)
4. Haas - 80pt (+6)
5. Toro Rosso - 73pt (+8)
6. Red Bull - 71pt (+10)
7. Williams - 70pt (+15)
8. Sauber - 69pt (+4)
9. Renault - 62pt (DNF)
10. McLaren - 33pt (DNF)

Sadly, the adjusted driver's points has been going the way of Ralf Schumacher:

1. Ricciardo - 511pt
2. Vettel - 261pt
3. Verstappen - 241pt
4. Hamilton - 238pt
5. Bottas - 197pt

In 1999, Schumacher finished with what would have been 711pt because his team-mate's car almost never finished, pushing Williams's FACC points down to just 45 - less than 20% of Ferrari's. Here, both Red Bulls are in the top three because when one car finishes, the other doesn't.

This has made me consider a second modifier, which is to multiply the drivers' points by the percentage of FACC finishes the car has achieved.

For example, in 13 races this season, Mercedes has had one retirement and recorded 12 FACC finishes. So we take Hamilton and Bottas's points and multiply them by 12/13. Red Bull has had nine retirements, but never two in a race, recording 4 FACC finishes. So we take Verstappen and Ricciardo's points and multiply them by 4/13.

That gives:

1. Vettel - 221pt (+1)
2. Hamilton - 220pt (-1)
3. Bottas - 182pt (-)
4. Ricciardo - 157pt (-)
5. Raikonnen - 130pt (-)
6. Perez - 81pt (+1)
7. Ocon - 77pt (+1)
8. Verstappen - 74pt (-2)
9. Hulkenberg - 64pt (+1)
10. Massa - 52pt (+1)

It also gives Eddie Irvine back his 1999 title he should have won, by 178pt to Frentzen's 151pt, and Ralf third on 146pt (by the current scoring system).

I'm not totally happy with it yet, but it's a work in progress still!

Cripes, I forgot to finish off 2017. I'll do that later.

In the meantime, 2018 looks like this:

After Bahrain
1. Mercedes (40) - 15, 25
2. McLaren (30) - 12, 18

Should be 15 for Sauber making a total of 27, old boy.

Otherwise, good work 👍

Only McLaren and Mercedes-Benz have a perfect finishing record so far. Neat.

After the Spainish Grand Prix
1. Mercedes (100) - 15, 25, 25, 10, 25
2. Ferrari (65) - 25, 0, 15, 25, 0
3. McLaren (56) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0

9. Toro Rosso (19) - 0, 6, 1, 12, 0
10. Haas (14) - 0, 10, 4, 0, 0

Right, time for an update after a flurry of races:

After the German Grand Prix:

1. Mercedes (194) - 15, 25, 25, 10, 25, 18, 18, 15, 0, 18, 25
2. Ferrari (173) - 25, 0, 15, 25, 0, 25, 15, 18, 25, 25, 0

3. Red Bull (127) - 18, 0, 18, 0, 18, 15, 25, 25, 0, 8, 0
4. McLaren (88) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0, 0, 0, 6, 8, 12, 6
5. Force India (88) - 8, 4, 10, 0, 0, 10, 8, 0, 15, 15, 18
6. Renault (85) - 10, 15, 12, 0, 0, 12, 12, 12, 0, 0, 12

7. Sauber (78) - 0, 12, 2, 15, 15, 0, 6, 8, 12, 0, 8
8. Haas (75) - 0, 10, 4, 0, 0, 8, 10, 10, 18, 0, 15
9. Williams (56) - 0, 8, 6, 0, 12, 6, 0, 4, 10, 10, 0
10. Toro Rosso (29) - 0, 6, 1, 12, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10

It's worth noting that Ferrari actually overtook Mercedes at the British GP, but Mercedes is back up top after today.

Nobody outside the top three has scored an FACC victory yet. Lowest second place is Haas in the slightly mad Austrian GP. McLaren is ahead of Force India on countback (two 2nd places to one). Toro Rosso is the only team to manage worse than three consecutive non-scores, with SIX until a 10pt finish today. In fact Toro Rosso (Honda), Haas (Ferrari), Renault (Renault), Force India (Mercedes) and McLaren (Renault) are the only teams to record even back-to-back non-scores (three for McLaren).

It's looking like Mercedes/Ferrari for the win, Red Bull for third, everyone for 4th-8th and Williams in 9th (cack drivers), Toro Rosso in 10th (cack engines).

Four more races down, so time for an update!

After the Singapore Grand Prix:

1. Mercedes (287) - 15, 25, 25, 10, 25, 18, 18, 15, 0, 18, 25, 18, 25, 25, 25
2. Ferrari (234) - 25, 0, 15, 25, 0, 25, 15, 18, 25, 25, 0, 25, 0, 18, 18
3. Red Bull (142) - 18, 0, 18, 0, 18, 15, 25, 25, 0, 8, 0, 0, 0, 0, 15

4. Force India (129) - 8, 4, 10, 0, 0, 10, 8, 0, 15, 15, 18, 8, 18, 15, 0

6. Haas (109) - 0, 8, 4, 0, 0, 8, 10, 10, 18, 0, 15, 15, 15, 0, 4
7. McLaren (96) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0, 0, 0, 6, 8, 12, 6, 0, 0, 0, 8
8. Sauber (96) - 0, 10, 2, 15, 15, 0, 6, 8, 12, 0, 8, 0, 0, 8, 10
9. Williams (88) - 0, 6, 6, 0, 12, 6, 0, 4, 10, 10, 0, 6, 12, 12, 2
10. Toro Rosso (57) - 0, 2, 1, 12, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10, 12, 10, 0, 6

I've kept Force India's points for RPFI, because it'd be daft not to. That did briefly see Force India in 3rd after Monza - four non-finishes from Red Bull saw Force India close a 39pt gap - but normal service is restored after Singapore.

McLaren has had a bit of a fall from grace, holding top three early on and best-of-the-rest for much of the summer. A second three-race blank spell has dropped them into last of the midfielders, separated from Sauber only on countback (two 2nds to none). Haas and Renault have had fairly consistent points finishes (along with Force India), emphasising the reliability aspect of FACC. The whole midfield is still covered by just 33pt.

Williams have been finishing often too, but they're slow as all balls, so still sit as the worst team that doesn't have a Honda engine.

And then there's Toro Rosso, more than a win away from even Williams.

Six races left, which means 150pt on the table. That rules out anyone below Red Bull for the title, and Red Bull itself is only 6pt away from being out of contention...

Looks like Japan is in the bag (and the titles not far behind), so update time:

1. Mercedes (312) - 15, 25, 25, 10, 25, 18, 18, 15, 0, 18, 25, 18, 25, 25, 25, 25
2. Ferrari (249) - 25, 0, 15, 25, 0, 25, 15, 18, 25, 25, 0, 25, 0, 18, 18, 15
3. Red Bull (160) - 18, 0, 18, 0, 18, 15, 25, 25, 0, 8, 0, 0, 0, 0, 15, 18
4. Force India (141) - 8, 4, 10, 0, 0, 10, 8, 0, 15, 15, 18, 8, 18, 15, 0, 12
5. Renault (117) - 10, 15, 12, 0, 0, 12, 12, 12, 0, 0, 12, 10, 0, 10, 12, 0
6. Haas (109) - 0, 8, 4, 0, 0, 8, 10, 10, 18, 0, 15, 15, 15, 0, 4, 0
7. McLaren (104) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0, 0, 0, 6, 8, 12, 6, 0, 0, 0, 8, 8
8. Sauber (96) - 0, 10, 2, 15, 15, 0, 6, 8, 12, 0, 8, 0, 0, 8, 10, 0
9. Williams (94) - 0, 6, 6, 0, 12, 6, 0, 4, 10, 10, 0, 6, 12, 12, 2, 6
10. Toro Rosso (67) - 0, 2, 1, 12, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10, 12, 10, 0, 6, 10

Not much change then. Toro Rosso still more than a win behind anybody else (and Red Bull getting their engine next year, yay!), Red Bull now out of contention with 100pt left on the table. The championship can conceivably finish at Austin, with a Mercedes FACC win and Ferrari DNFing - the "real" championship can't (there's 78pt between Mercedes and Ferrari, and 172pt remaining. If Mercedes 1-2 and Ferrari doesn't finish, that puts them at 121pt ahead and 129pt remaining) - and that's a bit of a risk as Vettel tends to overdrive under extreme pressure.

Of note is Force India's position. In the "real" championship, Force India is 7th since its new entry, on 43pt, but would be 4th on 102pt if allowed to keep its points from before - just as it is in FACC. If we had excluded it in the same way in FACC it would be last, but on 53pt. For me, this is a pretty glaring example of why FACC is better than F1; since RPFI's new entry, Toro Rosso has scored 2pt for a single 9th, Williams has scored 3pt for a 9th and a 10th, Sauber has scored 9pt for a 7th, 9th and 10th. None of those three teams' other 23 finishes in that time have been recognised, and wouldn't be except on an irrelevant countback (it's perhaps less necessary now that there's no teams routinely scoring no points across whole seasons). In FACC, they've scored 94pt between them in that time, and it's much easier for fans to see the differences.

@Famine I might have asked you this before but have you ever submitted this to anyone? Even on the off chance. Or at least amongst your contacts in the journo world.

I really would love this system to be introduced to Formula One for real.

I haven't. Perhaps we'll do a blog post on it :D

I was away last weekend doing GT Sport stuff in Madrid. I've not even seen the USA race yet, but here's the points:

1. Mercedes (330) - 15, 25, 25, 10, 25, 18, 18, 15, 0, 18, 25, 18, 25, 25, 25, 25, 18
2. Ferrari (274) - 25, 0, 15, 25, 0, 25, 15, 18, 25, 25, 0, 25, 0, 18, 18, 15, 25
3. Red Bull (160) - 18, 0, 18, 0, 18, 15, 25, 25, 0, 8, 0, 0, 0, 0, 15, 18, 0
4. Force India (141) - 8, 4, 10, 0, 0, 10, 8, 0, 15, 15, 18, 8, 18, 15, 0, 12
5. Renault (132) - 10, 15, 12, 0, 0, 12, 12, 12, 0, 0, 12, 10, 0, 10, 12, 0, 15
6. Haas (109) - 0, 8, 4, 0, 0, 8, 10, 10, 18, 0, 15, 15, 15, 0, 4, 0, 0
7. McLaren (104) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0, 0, 0, 6, 8, 12, 6, 0, 0, 0, 8, 8, 0
8. Williams (104) - 0, 6, 6, 0, 12, 6, 0, 4, 10, 10, 0, 6, 12, 12, 2, 6, 10
9. Sauber (96) - 0, 10, 2, 15, 15, 0, 6, 8, 12, 0, 8, 0, 0, 8, 10, 0, 0
10. Toro Rosso (79) - 0, 2, 1, 12, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10, 12, 10, 0, 6, 10, 12

Not really that much change. Lots of non-finishes means not much movement. Force India has closed up on Red Bull, which says something about one or both of them, while Williams now joins McLaren on 104pt, after a run of six consecutive finishes (though Stroll was quite lucky to finish this one) relegating Sauber to 9th.

Toro Rosso is within a whisker of getting itself out of perma-last. Ferrari is now only 56pt behind Mercedes despite Vettel's shenanigans - Austin could see the title going to Mercedes (if Ferrari doesn't beat Mercedes by at least six points) or carrying on through to Brazil (if it does).

Season done, so here's the FACC points!

1. Mercedes (409) - 15, 25, 25, 10 , 25, 18, 18, 15, 0, 18, 25, 18, 25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 18, 18, 18, 18

3. Red Bull (225) - 18, 0, 18, 0, 18, 15, 25, 25, 0, 8, 0, 0, 0, 0, 15, 15, 18, 0, 0, 25, 25
4. Force India (163) - 8, 6, 10, 0, 0, 10, 8, 0, 15, 15, 18, 8, 18, 15, 0, 12, 12, 0, 0, 8, 0

6. Renault (136) - 10, 15, 12, 0, 0, 12, 12, 12, 0, 0, 12, 10, 0, 10, 12, 4, 0, 15, 0, 0, 0
7. Williams (132) - 0 8, 6, 0, 12, 6, 0, 4, 10, 10, 0, 6, 12, 12, 2, 2, 6, 10, 12, 4, 10
8. McLaren (128) - 12, 18, 8, 18, 0, 0, 0, 6, 8, 12, 6, 0, 0, 0, 8, 6, 8, 0, 0, 6, 12
9. Sauber (123) - 0, 12, 2, 15, 15, 4, 6, 8, 12, 0, 8, 0, 0, 8, 10, 8, 0, 0, 15, 0, 0
10. Toro Rosso (99) - 0, 4, 1, 12, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10, 12, 10, 0, 6, 0, 10, 12, 10, 10, 0

And, if you really want to see some stats:
Mercedes - 409 - Hamilton 16.63:83.37 Bottas
Ferrari - 332 - Vettel 46.99:53.01 Raikkonen
Red Bull - 225 - Ricciardo 73.78:26.22 Verstappen
Force India - 163 - Perez 60.74:39.26 Ocon
Haas - 154 - Grosjean 42.21:57.79 Magnussen
Renault - 136 - Hulkenberg 32.35:67.65 Sainz
Williams - 132 - Stroll 43.94:56.06 Sirotkin
McLaren - 128 - Alonso 14.06:85.94 Vandoorne
Sauber - 123 - LeClerc 21.14:78.86 Ericsson
Toro Rosso - 99 - Gasly 44.44:55.56 Hartley

If you're not familiar with FACC, that's the ratio of points scored by the drivers. The higher the score the more often that driver finishes second of the two cars when both finish, and thus that's the relative pace of the drivers in each car. That shows Williams and Haas as relatively balanced but - shockingly - Ferrari too, in a season where one driver is supposedly phoning it in on a regular basis and clearly the team's #2 driver behind their big world title hope... McLaren and Mercedes are clearly unbalanced. Perhaps surprisingly Verstappen is well ahead of Ricciardo, which might justify the decision to move on both their parts.

And if we apply the FACC points difference as a difficulty multiplier, the driver points look like this:

1. Verstappen - 453 (249)
2. Hamilton - 408 (408)
3. Vettel - 394 (320)
4. Raikkonen - 309 (251)
5. Ricciardo - 309 (170)
6. Bottas - 247 (247)
7. Hulkenberg - 208 (69)
8. Alonso - 160 (50)
9. Sainz - 159 (53)
10. Perez - 156 (62)
11. Magnussen - 149 (56)
12. LeClerc - 130 (39)
13. Ocon - 123 (49)
14. Gasly - 120 (29)
15. Grosjean - 98 (37)
16. Vandoorne - 38 (12)
17. Ericsson - 30 (9)
18. Stroll - 19 (6)
19. Hartley - 17 (4)
20. Sirotkin - 3 (1)
