That sound is likely from electric motor. Carbon brushes can make that kind of noise. Motor is likely not about die and this is what you get with normal DC motors.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. The CSW is not 100% smooth and free of notching. I would say it is more like 99%. So if you feel a little bit of uneven feedback during heavy countersteering and FFB load, that is normal. However, there should not be any audible grinding noise. That is bad. That is what I have. The wheel obviously gives off a mechanical noise, but this is roughly the same if the wheel is off or if you are playing a game. Contact Fanatec and see what goes.

Thanks for pointing this out but the uneven feedback is prominent without heavy counter steering. I thought this wheel was intended to deliver smooth feedback. Also if I let go the wheel it vibrates significantly. I'm not sure if this is suppose to happen, as I mentioned in my previous post this is my first time using a wheel so it is new to me. I will contact Fanatec and see what they have to say.

Logiforce,

Thanks for the explanation regarding the PCB Fanatec have confirmed shipment of this part. I hope it's not too difficult to install, as my skills are not suited to replacing electronic components.

No issues with my CSW. Plenty of other people not having any issues as well.

I'd say it would be a great buy, either now or later.

People need not take the words of a few as the voice if many.

You should not fear fanatec wheels. I had trouble with turbo S wheel and fanatec sent new wheel. My wheel is now quite old already and still kicking g25 ass :) Also my turbo S wheel is plastic crap compared to CSW, so I would fear nothing with CSW. The reason that I have not bought the wheel is that there is not yet lighter round rim option available.

I would absolutely consider it if you have a lot of disposable income laying around. If you do not, I would wait until maybe the holiday. By then, some of the current issues, should, hopefully be ironed out.

BTW this is what mine sounds like...

If anyone has "a lot of disposable income laying around", they should also consider lot of other FFB wheels like the new Frex Simwheel Type G (especially with the optional non-cogging Coreless Motor and water-cooling), the ECCI 7000 or if you can find it, the new Leo Bodnar's FFB setup.

It's very easy to do. 10 simple steps.

1. Remove 3 screws to remove the foot rest (I always leave the middle one as the last one to do, as the plate then stays nicely balanced and does not slide anywhere).
2. Disconnect all cables.
3. Remove the 4 screws that are on each corner of the PCB.
4. Remove the old PCB.
5. Place the new PCB.
6. Screw in the 4 screws with their washers to secure the new PCB into place.
7. Reconnect all the wires again. You can judge where they go from the wire length, bends and connectors. Can't go wrong.
8. Put the foot rest back on.
9. Screw in the 3 screws to secure the foot rest (starting with the middle screw again, then other ones on the outside).
10. Check if everything works again as should and have fun.

Which only works on the PC and at least in terms of Frex, is not reliable either.

I do not think it is the belt coming loose. This sound is very different from the belt slipping (which happens every once in a while). This is like what a G25 sounds like when turning but a little quieter/muffled. The tactile sensation is also the same as a G25.

Obviously, since I have used the CSW for over a month now, I can definitively say this is not normal.

What is strange is that is only happens under FFB load. Does this mean the FFB motors are going bad? :nervous: IDK. I am sure Fanatec will help me out.

My CSW with Formula rim has similar issue. At times it feels like there is on less motor or just something not right. It can heal itself at times for few laps and then the wheel looses any kind of input in iRacing for a millisecond and after that no feedback plus the wheel display will get stuck in gear i was in but the wheel tuning menu will work.

CSW feels like it has heavy teeth drive (similar to my old dfgt but rougher) when its not working and the sound is different and hard not smooth like it is when all is good. Also there is some funny smell at times like oil or something?

When this happends and i turn off wheel and back on the calibration of wheel looks like on slow motion and it dosnt have strenght to center itself.

Fanatec have asked me to check different things from firmware to grounding my playseat but its not that obviously.

In one way i feel not so bad to hear that im not the only one with similar issues not that that it is any good but at least they should start to belive that it is an issue when more people have issues.

Really? wow... what exactly was done to make that support happen? Was PD/Sony involved in having the PS3 accept the device, or was it just something Frex took so long to make happen?

The FREX wheel works on the PS3 because it uses the electronics from a G25/27. If you go to their website you'll see you need a G25/27 in order for your Frex Type G to work. They even offer a cool little box so you can stick the guts of the G25/27 in the box to make it look nice and clean. You can also elect not to use the box, but you set up will look ghetto.
Think of the Frex of a Logitech G25/27 on steroids :)

Hi Christian,

Thanks for taking the time to write this detailed explanation of how to replace the PCB unit. It is appreciated.

You can use any any box that's big enough to fit the PCB from G25/G27. Save that money and get the water cooling system and Coreless Motor.

In term of smoothness and power, the Frex even in its first iteration (Mk I) beats the CSR-E from which the CSW is based on. But as paskowitz's pointed out, reliability is an issue with Frex. The upside to that is that it's open system (unlike the Fanatec which is in enclosed box with proprietary built components), so you can easily purchase parts from anywhere in the world and replacing them.

I actually raised this question on behalf of someone who purchased a CSW I tested before sending it to them on page 373 of this thread, post #7457.

But it never received follow-up reply.

So I guess according to amf7 this has already been done somehow. Via firmware on production CSW, or on the Adapter?

Fanatec's answer: "if you only use the Logitech pedals, you can choose the G25/G27 pedal adapter cable “PWPEDALCG25”

Damn autocorrect. I know its gran not grand ;)

Edit, sorry. Sounds like I meant a gt branded csw. I did not.

I noticed the CSW rim is either Fanatec branded or has a Fanatec sticker on it...

Hopefully this is a bit of forshadowing.

It has g25 electronics now. So no PD involvement :) (just like with fanatec)

Edit: Apparently you have to acquire g25 electronic board yourself.

Is there even one in developement? I hadnt heard anything yet. I think he means the Formula rim that came with it upon release...

Ok, it is the Formula Rim.
Yes, it is a wonderful wheel! shame that my paddle shifter spring broke so I have limited my use of the wheel. I went ahead an ordered the GT2 wheel so I can use that if my Forumla rim is out of commission for a time.

I have only read that Fanatec/Thomas want to release a F1 replica wheel for the CSW. I was hoping beyond hope that maybe this has gone from discussions and plans for a Formula1 wheel to an actual product and it was being tested IMMORTALPILOT. I am probably thinking way ahead of the time needed to make the F1 wheel for the CSW.
