Fanatec Podium Direct Drive Wheel Bases Thread

I enjoy watching Matt’s videos, but the settings he was using and lack of knowledge with DD wheels really doesn’t help to get an accurate review of how the Fanatec DD1/2 perform against the competition.

To start with most of those oscillations where most likely a result of the minimum force he added in the set up. If I add anything over 1% on my csw v2.5 my wheel starts to oscillate, at 2% it shakes quite violently whilst sitting in the pits. I can only image a that a DD1/2 with 3 times the power of a csw v2.5 would make that even worse and is most likely the cause of what we saw in that video.

I am sure in the next few days there will be many more reviews and I look forward to ones from people with more experience with using and setting up direct drive wheels.

Yep I appreciated the invite too but 1600km v.v. one day was a bit too much for me. I already have another 'mandatory' appointment for today. If I could have arranged a day or two extra before or after the event to stay in the area I would have paid them a visit.

Hopefully for those who could not attend we will see some nice vids.

That is the most useless video. Fanatec really needs to work on their marketing and who they get involved with.
Which one is useless?

edit: If you mean the video from Ron you must be a completely retarded idiot. If you mean that video from that english guy who more or less just fiddling arround with his phone and talk about tea & coffee you are right.

Well we’ll just have to be patient for some proper reviews but at the moment it doesn’t look like an upgrade for those of us running DDs for the past several years.

On a side note I killed my Fanatec black F1 rim trying to attach a usb conversion so I could play F1 2018, I lost that wheel but I was successful in converting the carbon one and after I tried F1 2018 with my DD wheel with the carbon F1 wheel and my Heusinkveld ultimates I forgot how sad I was of having destroyed one wheel, wow F1 2018 has some of the best FFB I have felt, you feel everything on the road.

Well the ability to use any of Fanatec's range of rims alone is a big advantage over other DD wheels on the market.

If you are interested in that sort of thing. I'm not. One rim is all I need to play race games, such as AC and the future ACC.

Not if you already have other better (and yes more expensive) custom rims :P.

I’ve decided to hold out until they show the new optional QR they mention on the website as I don’t like the current one and want a proper automotive one that doesn’t need any screwing system or a lot of force to take off. I really like the B-G Racing Road spec ones the AF uses as it just locks in and pops off so easily.

Additionally I also would only want Podium rims as I don’t like the CSW buttons, they work fine but they are game controller buttons and after trying knitter switches and magnetic shifters it’s a night and day difference, they just feel so good.

Then there’s also the software, if it can at least equal the Accuforce telemetry stuff, I’m in because there’s still a few games which can’t do automatic DOR like Automobilsta and rF2 with any DD wheels but I’m betting they can on the Podium as it will communicate with the sane systems that let their CSW automatically work.

Finally motor reliability will be interesting to see, I was thinking of pre-ordering to get the 5 year warranty included but after hearing it’s basically the same as an OSW performance wise means I’ll wait for those questions to be answered as it’s more about better integration and ease of use for me with some more motor strength.

Just awesome :D

Couple of new vids on YT in German and French about the Fanatec community event and the DD1. Just do a search on Fanatec and filter by date. Although both not my native language I could follow for the most of the streams. TBH German was easier ;)

I understand that there is a lot of interesting information in this video, but if he does not speak German it will be useless for him.:)
Yes, but on the other hand it would be even more idiotic to call every existing video useless only because its not in my language.:dunce:

Btt: I just wonder why only 4 videos found on yt yet. Maybe today or tomorrow more- in more languages :)

Because was a Community event from Fanatec. You will have more opinion at Simexpo in about 3 weeks, where almost everyone that are involved in simracing will be there.

I would take the results with a grain of salt especially the Accuforce ones.

Yeah it seems like Fanatec gimped on purpose the Accuforce wheel by turning off the software it needs to run smooth(sim commander I believe), I don’t own one so I don’t know how true that is

If you are a Fanatec fanboy don’t watch the Malone stream videos, first after testing the wheels against the AccuForce and OSW he was calling the DDs buttery smooth, then he tried to stream and wasted almost half an hour trying to get the wheel to work in iracing.
He said he wouldn’t upgrade his CSW V2 to the DD at the moment, he hated also the 1.5 shifter gating and the CS V3 pedals.
I spoke to Matt many times during his stay here and he was really positive about the DD base. I recommend watching his 11 short vlogs on YouTube (or at least #7 and #11). He struggled with the shifter and pedals as he is very used to his own equipment at home; it was much easier for him to appreciate the benefits of the Podium base, because it was a direct upgrade from ClubSport to Podium - he even used the same steering wheel.

It was super funny when he tried the wheel at 100%, those oscillations almost shook off the whole rig apart along with his arms.
He was not trying the wheel at 100% there, the iRacing force slider doesn't work that way. You can only go up to the appropriate Nm value for the wheel - if you go beyond then you're generating a clipped signal that exaggerates the oscillations.

This is 100% incorrect. We had Accuforce users and several DD experts at the event specifically there to check that the settings were fair.

If you watch the Gamer Muscle video he clearly states that a bunch of them were let in the night before to help set everything up and get it working correctly. Where do you get off talking such complete and utter nonsense about something you seemingly know so little about?

Cool your jets shorty, I even said I DON’T own one and I said it seems like because it was not my opinion but that of the Accuforce owners on the iracing forum saying that their wheels were not notchy unless they turned off the software

I assume everyone is talking about the Accuforce 2 when they refer to the "Accuforce wheel", correct?
It is a V2 you can see it in the pictures but it’s the same internals as the V1.

Now to add to the conversation about notchiness as an AFV2 owner coming directly from a CSW V2 I can tell you anyone who says it’s just as smooth either hasn’t tried a smooth wheel or is lying. That being said I would say notchiness isn’t the right way to describe how it feels and makes it sound much worse than it is like cogging on logitech wheels.

In actuality what you can feel when there is no FFB is more like a very gentle rumble/buzz and obviously when you’re actually driving you’re getting FFB so can’t feel it at all. So yes it’s there in the actual mechanism/motor but not in the FFB delivery.

Now I’ve discussed it with @DomB_Fanatec in relation to how it compares to the Podium base because although I can’t feel it normally knowing it’s there and feeling it when the wheels off or not doing anything does bother me a bit.

That being said I’m still waiting on the other things I outlined before deciding as CSW rims are a downgrade on custom ones and the Sim Commander software is great for setting up FFB easily especially in games where the base FFB is terrible (Dirt Rally) or cryptic (PCars), then there’s questions of reliability but as soon as those are known I’ll either swap or stick to what I have.
