Fanatec Podium Direct Drive Wheel Bases Thread

It is a V2 you can see it in the pictures but it’s the same internals as the V1.

Now to add to the conversation about notchiness as an AFV2 owner coming directly from a CSW V2 I can tell you anyone who says it’s just as smooth either hasn’t tried a smooth wheel or is lying. That being said I would say notchiness isn’t the right way to describe how it feels and makes it sound much worse than it is like cogging on logitech wheels.

In actuality what you can feel when there is no FFB is more like a very gentle rumble/buzz and obviously when you’re actually driving you’re getting FFB so can’t feel it at all. So yes it’s there in the actual mechanism/motor but not in the FFB delivery.

Now I’ve discussed it with @DomB_Fanatec in relation to how it compares to the Podium base because although I can’t feel it normally knowing it’s there and feeling it when the wheels off or not doing anything does bother me a bit.

That being said I’m still waiting on the other things I outlined before deciding as CSW rims are a downgrade on custom ones and the Sim Commander software is great for setting up FFB easily especially in games where the base FFB is terrible (Dirt Rally) or cryptic (PCars), then there’s questions of reliability but as soon as those are known I’ll either swap or stick to what I have.

That sounds about right. I think that you can disregard the cogging to no end comments and the AF is completely smooth comments. I think that Barry's review at the Sim Racing Garage is probably the most accurate. He was happy that he could get the AFV2 ffb to what he liked but thought it was missing just a little compared to bodnar/OSW and felt that there were differences between the smoothness of the different wheels. It sounds like the Fanatec wheel is around where the OSW is. It all comes down to this comment by Barry: "FFB "feel" is a very subjective thing. I don't think there is one right choice for everyone. Many factors will be in play to determine which one you like best. I suggest you try as many as you can to make up your own mind."

Two things that make me choose for the Fanatec DD wheel is the Plug & Play and the unlimited rotation.

But the price is also an important factor I have to take in consideration.

I spoke to Matt many times during his stay here and he was really positive about the DD base. I recommend watching his 11 short vlogs on YouTube (or at least #7 and #11). He struggled with the shifter and pedals as he is very used to his own equipment at home; it was much easier for him to appreciate the benefits of the Podium base, because it was a direct upgrade from ClubSport to Podium - he even used the same steering wheel.

He was not trying the wheel at 100% there, the iRacing force slider doesn't work that way. You can only go up to the appropriate Nm value for the wheel - if you go beyond then you're generating a clipped signal that exaggerates the oscillations.

I didn’t watch his YouTube blogs, all I saw was the live stream and he was giving his true feelings about the products he was using until the chat reminded him where he was at that moment in time, so he then said that the problem with the pedals could be because they might be units used in those types of events on a regular basis but as you know he has Heusinkveld Pro pedals so that didn’t help either.
About the oscillations I didn’t say it was a wheel problem just that it was funny as hell, I thought the rig and his arms were going to snap in half

I agree, with on caveat which is once you find something you are completely happy with just forget about it and don’t let anyone convince you there is much better as it only leads to your bank being empty and the reality is the differences generally aren’t all that big.

There’s always something better so just enjoy what you have for what it is. There’d be a lot less arguing on forums if people could accept that their latest toy is not the best thing ever and/or if those with better stuff didn’t insist on telling everyone how their stuff is junk when really it’s depreciating improvements as you go up the price chain.

You really have to be an expert in those instances to discern the differences as being more significant which is where reviews can skew people’s opinions a lot.

Oh one last thing I want to point out I’ve actually driven cars which have had actual notchiness in the steering rack, one if them was a 2012 Mazda MX-5 but obviously not something which would ever be simulated. Every car feels different unlike FFB which is only tied to the physics.

Was searching for some infos about the auctions and found this.... LOL

How will you smuggle all those toys in the house without your wife noticing?

Man you guys know nothing of the art of deception or white lies.

If it's in the house, she'll find it. Women notice everything.

Two weeks before you take your hidden cash to Fanatec.com tell her you've entered a giveaway.

The day you place the order tell her you've won.

Week later your prize arrives, bury the receipt in the backyard and everyone is happy.

We bought a new Charger for her last year so I have leverage and will be telling her I'm buying a DD1.

I feel so lucky to be wifeless. :P

I can buy a DD2, a full motion simulator, all the peripherals I need to race (shifter ......), a triple monitor setup, an OC gen.2 and no wife to complain.

Life is so beautiful.

There is quite a good discussion in a couple of threads in the iRacing forum about the event. It is almost worth subscribing for access to the forum alone.

I thought you were getting the DD2, what changed?
I was never interested in the DD2 because I'm not interested in excessive torque. If the DD1 is as good as the DD2 but less powerful than this is the wheel for me. It is all about the realistic feel of the wheel, low latency etc .... that interest me. I'm probably going to turn down the torque to the bare minimum.
