Ferrari F458 Italia

And already, someone has balls'd it up and written one off.

Let me guess....

This guy was driving. Right!

I love the dash in the 458, personally. It is completely driver focused, which very much appeals to me. In the Top Gear test, Clarkson's complaint about the indicators, for example, is kind of invalid because it is unlikely that you would be using them when you already have 180 degrees of lock wound on.

Fair enough, but the lack of Nav and Speed at the same time, is pure stupidity. Why not make it split screen, or put it on the corner of the screen? Sure you know what you're revving up to, but you can't check your speed.

The speed is displayed as a numeric value at the bottom right of the left-hand screen.

Also, another 458 crashes. This one was rented

Never driven around a roundabout before? I use indicators when my wheel is wound a long way around

Not really relevant. The Italia has two turns lock to lock. You'd have to find a pretty damn tight roundabout for your hands to even need to leave quarter-to-three, so your thumbs should almost always be in the right position for working the indicators.

Because it seems this new 458 is prone to accidents. Fires and crashing.

Or maybe it's just prone to moronic owners incapable of conducting themselves on public roads...

The real issue are the cases of the car bursting into flames. There's something up with that. There's some pics of them here, including a completely burnt out 458. A beautiful car reduced to ash...

EVO magazine have the 458 on track this month, and it really is incredibly fast...

Within a tenth or 2 of a Caterham R500, and over 1s quicker than a 430 Scud... and that's on normal tyres vs the Scud on Corsa's.

Proof that the 458 doesn't alway self combust and crash!

I am loving this car more and more. This is more like what previous Ferrari's should have been.

Seriously  I got a case of yawnism after watching that clip :ill:

Hehehe... that's John Barker. He's been at EVO for years (since it first started out as Performance Car). He's clearly a much better driver than TV presenter.

This weeks autocar has a standing kilometer test with various cars (Noble, 458, 997 Turbos S, GTR, Lexus etc)... As fast as the 458 is, it gets murdered by the Noble and the Turbo S.

That's going to be expensive, the shareholders won't be happy!

I'm sure they can offset the finacial hurt by selling a Ferrari badged Kia Ceed or opening another Ferrari theme park.

Bets on how much the sticker price on the 458 raises next model year?

It kinda makes me giggle that Ferrari used an adhesive instead of something more solid, as it seems like an unnecessary small measure of cost-cutting. Also I'm kinda shocked there's already 1200 of these out in the world

I think adhesives are pretty common practice nowadays... they are generally seen as the 'better' solution rather than the 'cheaper' solution.

Also surprised by the numbers out there... when was the 1st car delivered?

Quite a bummer for Ferrari, but I had seen the Paris picture before and the comments did point out something was going wrong with the car.

In the last 4 months, I think to have seen: 3 red ones (1 UK Registered, 1 Belgian, 1 Lux), 1 black one, 1 camouflage one, so yes they are around. In February they were already at the dealers, but not clear if they were delivered already at that time or only for show.

This is really going to hurt Ferrari, recalling there 'game changing' model right after launch. If I had bought one I might consider a refund rather than a replacement because whatever they do to fix the problem it will be an add on or a botch job (like the iPhone 4 bumpers!). I dont want some guy drilling arch fasteners into the ones already on the production line! Wait a year and the whole arch and engine area will probably be redesigned.

If it can't even take the heat in Paris I would like to see how it fairs in Dubai were I can see many of these being bound for. After all the high speed test runs this car probably had I'm suprised not one caught fire.

Robin.

I highly doubt Ferrari will do anything like a "botch" job on a car they're offering to replace at their costs. They'll already be losing money due to the replacements, so the need to make things right this time around are very high.

Agree completely... this is a £200k car (inc. extras) and it will sit in a very competitive market placs (Gallardo, McLaren, Noble etc), Ferrari won't do anything to risk the long-term reputation of the 458.

You know, i wrote a thread about this once, that got shut down because "Ferrari lovers" could not take the truth, I'm a Ferrari lover as well but it's obvious when the car has a problem, you don't have to go in defense mode.. just my 2 cents.

Uhmm no,

If I remember correctly, your thread had an incredibly biased poll and at the time it was just pure speculation and stated an unconfirmed view as fact, thus it was closed.

At least it makes the car seem more "Italian supercar". It just isn't the same when all their cars are perfect reliability and easily drivable on the public roads. Now it will go down in legend as the car that set itself on fire, doesn't that sound cooler? :D

The way I read it was all affected models that arnt a charred pile already would only get 'modification' service and would not get a brand new car. That to me says some guy drilling aftermarket holes and removing gooey adhesive which I dont want done on my new $250,000 supercar!

I say they fit a whole new resigned arch section which has the needed mouting points built in but that would take months to design, test and produce.

Well I guess it adds to the excitement when you dont know when your car is going to spontaneously combust, If you drive faster it gets safer so better making sure your pushing air through that thing!
