Ferrari F458 Italia

Of course Ferrari will deliver sensational service and excellent post-selling assistance as always, we're talking about a 200 grand + supercar, not a Fiat panda. Also, there is the so praised relationship with the customers of the pranching horse brand, I'm quite sure that this little upsetting will be rewarded with a exquisite and exclusive track day in a premium european circuit dedicated to 458 owners, as well as more events developed to promote even more the car and thus make people forget about the little mistake.

Also, what about the pissed owners of the barbecued cars? Who will refund them: the insurance company of each owner, or Ferrari itself? (given that the defect was already confirmed as a design flaw)

They're getting new cars. That's their refund.

I don't see what's so great.. it's just a typical characcter lacking buzz buzz warble warble-soundtrack of the Ferrari V8.. They need to get back to the infernal scream of 355 and 360.

Mate, that thing getting along with the M3, Porsch and the 'Vette... Perfect and yet another amazing season of ALMS is surely heading on our way!

I have a feeling Risi will walk away with the title once they get their hands on that car, but time will tell. It's a completely new car, and the Flying Lizards are also coming with a brandnew 911 racer, so the Corvettes and M3s might be able to capitalize on that. But once Risi has found the speed in that 458? Oh dear...

Well, no matter how good the car is, they can always find a way to equalize the teams, which is the point. Whether it be horsepower, downforce or otherwise. And we shall see how much unfamiliarity will hinder them. My view: not much. Shall be an interesting season with these new machines....as always.

Perhaps, but remember Matech is on their way with a new, & revised GT LM. Matech, like Flying Lizard, know their cars very well, so Risi will need more than just the new 458 GT2.

That's Jeremy Clarkson, why do you think he's a blowhard?

he is. But that's why we love him. Most of us, anyway.

((I think that aspect of his personality (along with May's OCD and Hammond's...well, hammond-ness) is a bit played up for TV...))

The more lightweight variant of this car, and also the successor to the 430 Scuderia in a way, has finally been revealed!

It's named the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

From GTspirit.com:

After being talked about ever since the Ferrari 458 Italia first debuted way back in 2009, the stripped-down hardcore version of the 458 has finally been revealed in the form of the Ferrari 458 Speciale! Contrary to previous reports, the car does not carry the much-rumored Monte Carlo nameplate.

Set for an official debut at the upcoming IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 next month, the Ferrari 458 Speciale has been described as “completely new, uncompromising, streamlined sports car concept” according to Ferrari. As long expected, the Ferrari 458 Speciale features a selection of performance, visual and aerodynamic improvements.

Starting on the powertrain, the Ferrari 458 Speciale features a modified variant of the regular 458 Italia’s 4.5-liter V8 engine. In Speciale guise, it delivers a total of 597hp and 398lb-ft of torque thus making it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine ever produced by Ferrari. What’s more, Ferrari claims that thanks to it delivering 133hp per liter, it has the highest ever per liter output of a road-going naturally aspirated engine. Maximum power is achieved at 9000rpm while max torque is reached at 6000rpm.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale tips the scales at just 1290kg and Ferrari consequently claims a sprint time to 100km/h in just 3 seconds and the car can then hit 200km/h in just 9.1 seconds. What’s more, Ferrari claims that the Ferrari 458 Speciale can sprint around the Fiorano test track in just 1:23.5 seconds thus making it 1.5 seconds faster than the standard car and just .5 seconds slower than the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

From a styling and aerodynamic perspective, the design of the Ferrari 458 Speciale was largely dictated by aerodynamics but Pininfarina was involved in creating the Italian supercar’s completed look. That ‘look’ consists of new front and rear bumpers, new side sills, new rear diffuser and redesigned rear grille as well as dual exhaust pipes rather than the three of the regular Ferrari 458 Italia. The Ferrari 458 Speciale then features a dramatic blue and white stripe stretching down the middle.

As mentioned, these changes also act to improve the aerodynamics of the Speciale. In fact, Ferrari claims that the Speciale has the best balance between drag and downforce of any regular production car.

Another new piece of technology featured on the Ferrari 458 Speciale is the Side Slip Angle Control system. Abbreviated as SSC, the electronic system uses a special algorithm to analyse the slip angle of the Ferrari 458 Speciale. It then compares it to a target figure and then helps optimise torque distribution between the two driven wheels.

Completing the changes of the Ferrari 458 Speciale are a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires which offer great consistency and all-weather grip. As a matter of fact, the Ferrari 458 Speciale has achieved the highest lateral g-force recorded by any Ferrari. What’s the figure? Well, an impressive 1.33g!

No pricing details for the Ferrari 458 Speciale have been released just yet.

It's not named 458 Monte Carlo after all.

Anyway, putting the impressive numbers aside, I don't find this to be as pretty as the standard 458. Those creases on the front make it feel a little bit crude despite their function. The rear is now much less evocative than the one on the standard car to me. It's a different case with the predecessor - I found the 430 Scuderia to be more visually attractive than the F430.

Still quite excited to hear about this though.

And...one more thing. I'm not sure about this protruding bit:

You're right, it's not as good looking as the stock car. The nose is awkward to the extreme, though I don't mind the racier rear. Different, without being worse, IMO.

But holy hell, those stats. Insane!

That protruding bit looks hinged in the close-up shot, but the overall interior shot proves it isn't.

They could have picked a better placement for those three buttons instead of attached to a carbon fiber stalk sticking out of the center console.

Damn, just over 2800lbs, that can't be curb weight right? I think I like the cleaner look of the regular 458 more. Although I liked the F430 Scud visually more than the regular F430. Also I remember reading an article when they were calling it the Monte Carlo saying it would rev to 9500 rpm's, I guess that was wrong. I wonder if you have to order one of these to be privileged to buy a LaFerrari.

I like what they did with the rear much cleaner looking.

My last favorite [MR] Ferrari is still the 360 challenge or the Novitec Rosso version.

I always like the [FR] cars more except the California.

I don't really like it. But I'm not a massive fan of the 458 as a whole, styling-wise. The driving experience should be epic, though.

Meh. Taking the roof of a hardcore track-focused car, that doesn't have a CF monocoque, always seems to be a vanity project.

Just had one of those moments when you see a car for the first time and are shocked by it's beauty. I always thought the 458 Spider looked better than the Italia. This looks incredible.

The silly Ferrari names continue. This is a pain to pronounce if you're saying, "Speciale" correctly.
