Fidel Castro Dead

Fidel, Gone, goodbye, see ya,adios. Know why their cremating him. Because he would be dragged through the streets and beheaded. Scum bag, piece of 🤬. Condolences to his family? What the legitimate or illegitimate ones? Ask his ex wife what he was like! He was a spoiled rich kid. I hope they stoke the fire a little hotter when they burn that DBAG!!!!!!

I don't recall anyone claiming that Hussein or Gaddafi or Jong-il or any of those types being dead was a great loss to the world, even if they strongly disagreed with the situations that led to the actual event or expressed reservations of the fallout that would follow. Though there was a member who claimed that Hitler was overall pretty good for Germany, so I guess it takes all sorts.
Yeah you're right, that's fair enough. I guess what I mean is that especially with the recent election stuff, a lot of the Trump support also came with a denigration of Clinton's actions in Libya/Syria and there's also been partial rehabilitation of Gaddafi/Assad's images. I haven't seen it about Saddam really but it seems like the prevailing opinion of Assad and Gaddafi is becoming "he's bad but he's probably preferable to the alternative/they were better off under him", whereas the prevailing opinion of Castro seems to be "Hitler-tier horrifyingly evil monster" which seems quite extreme to me.

...Ah, so the thread finally goes up. Reading through it, I see there were some unpleasantries exchanging hands.

Personally, I respect the man for his... uh, longevity. He could very well be one of the most cursed/reviled man in the world, yet, still he managed to live an interesting life. Not condoning many of his actions of course. Just call it a begrudging respect for a cunning man.

Oh, and...

Robert Mugabe next? ;)

...Since we don't have a thread about Castro's death, I'll just leave this bit of news here instead.

Zimbabweans react to Castro's passing.

Here's what our idiot PM said.

  2. Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro
Antananarivo, Madagascar
November 26, 2016

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro:

“It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.

“Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.

“While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro’s supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante”.

“I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.”

I'm sorry,he clearly doesn't speak for this Canadian. If you want to read over these, there great. Add your own.

Twitter is blowing up now over his statements, here's another link with a couple good ones in it, I found the tweets about Hitler and Darth Vader especially funny. :)

F bombs for one.

 You guys don't understand how Cuban politics in Miami works. You show up, listen to people say some BS, and then yell and curse at each other until you finish your coffee. Then the news media shows up, you get interviewed by the reporter, and then you go home after saying goodbye to everyone.

"E'ta una comemierda!" doesn't translate well enough to have the same effect for GTP lol.

This one was particularly apt IMO:

Although flawed, Hitler was a vegetarian who loved animals, was a contributor to the arts & proud advocate for Germany. #TrudeauEulogies

This was my favorite so far, there was also a good one about Vlad the Impaler and Stalin but this one got me at the heart strings

"Some people saw a leader and role model. Some saw a tyrant who crushed all opposition. The truth is more complicated. RIP Florence Henderson"

edit:

This was perfect and horrible

"While controversial, Osama Bin Laden should be remembered for being one of NYC's top urban planners. #trudeaueulogies"

I find it shocking how many people are openly glorifying in the death of another human being.

Hell, on the scale of worldwide atrocities he's not even particularly far up the list of horrendous dictators. It's funny how media perception makes all the difference to people's reactions. Castro is a "bad guy", says the news, so we should all be happy that he's dead.

Sickening. It's days like this I'm sorry I'm part of the human race.

He could have been the nost benevolent leader in human history, and he'd still be characterised as a villain simply because he was ideologically opposed to the United States. After all, he thought that they were hypocrites for presenting themselves as champions of democracy, but then bringing about regime changes when it suited them. For a country that prides itself on being opposed to tyranny in all its forms, the United States was alarmingly comfortable with propping up tyrants because it was politically convenient for them.

I can't condone Castro for the way he ran the country. But I can't condemn him because he had a point.

Castro having a point about US hypocrisy, and it is a fair point, does not excuse what he did. It strikes me that opinion of him is quite binary; you either hate him for what he did and ignore the US hypocrisy angle or you praise him for the US hypocrisy angle and ignore what he did.

That's not a slight against any members posting in here, it just seems to the general consensus with people I have spoken to over the past few days and perhaps it's wrong of me, a Welshman with no ties to Cuba, to project my own anecdotal hypothesis but I suspect that I'm not alone in coming to a similar conclusion.

The topic of "Is it acceptable to celebrate a world leader's death?" could, and probably will, branch off into a separate thread. Like I said before, Fidel Castro had a point about US hypocrisy but he did some horrendous things himself. I guess that's all I have to offer on Castro specifically.

I'm of the same opinion. I just think it's far too easy to demonise him and neglect the opposing point of view simply because he committed to communism.

Demonize him!
A lot of people like to criticise me for only responding to parts of their posts. So I will do you a deal: I will bother to respond to your post in its entirety when you bother to stop taking my comments out of context. You know perfectly well that I was not defending Castro.

What good has come out of any Communist country?

Says history. Estimates of his killings start at 10000 but are probably closer to 100000.

Sickening. It's days like this I'm sorry I'm part of the human race.

You need a tissue? Should we all gather around the drum circle to sing kumbaya?

And before anyone starts crying how the world is glorifying the death of a man who successfully opposed the US, stop thinking and read again.

They're celebrating the death of a ruthless dictator with a long killstreak.

But don't worry, I'm sure they will still make Che Guevera shirts for you to buy at Norwegian Hot Topic.

You really do seem incapable of forming an argument without resorting to personal, condascending or abusive comments. Please try to at least act more mature, and less aggressive.

Have people actually read up on this sick bastard! I'm glad he's dead. There should not be one tear shed for him. I'm hoping old Kimbo in North Korea is next. Then we can line up some African dictators too.

Was Fidel Castro a race car all along?

History is a long, strange trip.

And I can't think of many longer and stranger than that of Fidel Castro. His story deserves close and continued study, regardless of our temporal feelings toward the man. I personally feel there is more to be told. The Bay of Pigs, The Cuban Missile Crisis, and the JFK assassination in particular are landmarks in history which swirled about his bearded visage. These events all occurred in my lifetime and were for me quite formative. Yet I do not adequately understand them.
