I've been getting increasingly pissed off with ITV's commentary. The earlier game of South Korea/Uruguay was a case in point.
ITV have about 12 minutes of preamble in the 30 minute build-up to the match. They get an intro sequence and a bit of VT, then 6 minutes of studio chatter. Then an ad-break and 6 more minutes of studio chatter. Then the teams come out, they do the anthems, an ad-break and the match starts.
Now, this match was significant to the two teams. South Korea have never reached a knock-out phase on foreign soil. Uruguay haven't reached a knock-out phase in 20 years - exactly 20 years, as it turns out. So we'd expect the first 6 minutes to focus on one team and their campaign so far and the second 6 to do the same for the other team. Right? No.
The first 6 minutes was spent talking about England-Germany. Tomorrow. Which ITV aren't even smegging broadcasting. The first couple minutes of the second segment was Argentina and Brazil, with 2 minutes on Diego Forlan's time at Manchester United and a bit of fluff about Park Ji-Sung at same.
At the end of the match - which South Korea were by no means clearly second best - which resulted in a narrow 2-1 defeat, the commentator exclaimed "SO 2002 WAS A FLUKE AFTER ALL!".
🤬. Off. They've just come through a group with one of the favoured African teams (3rd in African Cup of Nations), the 2004 European Champions and the current Olympic Champions with the second most points, second best goal difference and second highest number of goals scored. They've then been narrowly beaten by one of the form teams and current favourites - and become the only team in this World Cup so far to even score against them. I think that merits a bit more respect and credit than "Oh they lost, so any good results in the past were flukey".
ITV suck.
