First Car Suggestions? Daewoo FTW. Nothing else Matiz. Oh, and ExigeExcel's Almera.

Question, guys.

Theoretically, if I had come into a bit of money, rashly sold Kermit, and bought a 1997 Vectra 1.8 LS, how much more would it cost to run in general?

I think every MoT would be a case of "how many limbs? Um, Okay".

It'll chew up motorway miles alot better than kermit, and will sit more in comfort (relative) I guess.

[EDIT] A Honda Accord of similair age should be a bit better.

Petrol would be the main concern I imagine. Maybe a little bit better on t'motorway, but a 1.8 developed 13 years ago is going to dee-rink around town. But yeah, don't expect it to sail through many MOTs. And I imagine it'd be a bit like owning a used pair of socks.

Just buy a Mondeo.

A 97' Vectra 1.8?

When you said 'come into a bit of money' you really mean you found a fiver on the pavement or a couple of quid down the side of the sofa didn't you?

Seriously, Kermit is genuinely worth more than a '97 Vectra 1.8.

Get a Mondy if you really want an ex-rep mobile.

What ever you do don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat, don’t get a Fiat. ;)

Not sure how much you’ve got to spend but you could do worse than a Focus, not quite as much of a rep mobile and nice to drive. You can get a lowish mileage 10 year old for about £1,400 to £1,700.

What he means is his student loan comes in Monday, and this term is the shortest ;)

Right, after last year's shennanigans and a new stable job in between uni...

toyota tercel, toyota corolla or toyota camry. they are very reliable and fuel efficient but they are highly over priced.
honda civic, same as the toyota, reliable but over priced.

the old nissan sentra or the mazda protégé are fairly cheap and they are also reliable, quite not as much as a toyota.

WELL I'm looking at about £700 now on top of whatever I get for Kermit.

So slightly over a grand. Not ideal, but do-able.

You might want to check the locations of people before you reply to them.

Three of those cars aren't available in the UK, one is available but in a different form, one is available but is a wholly different car and the last is so far out of his budget that you may as well have suggested he buys a DeTomaso Pantera.

Danny - I forget your age and stuffing-it history. What's insurance like for you and what do you have set aside for running costs? You can do some utterly crazy crap on that budget if you can insure it and occasionally turn a spanner.

(and if you're set on Focus vs. Astra, shame on you for having no imagination and the Astra will make you want to chew off your own penis)

Not far off 21, with not far off 3 years no claims. To put it into context, my dad's on Admiral's multicar policy since we seem to rivaling the stock of a Carcraft lately. That's charging me about £400 to insure it, which is an improvment over the C.£800 it's been costing independently. Up to maybe 1.8, bordering on 2.0 would be doable insurance and running-costs wise. A lot of the work would be done by my dad. It helps to have an AA patrolman as a personal slave parent.

Any other reasonable suggestions?

If it's french or italian, I've been expressly forbidden. Again.

Civic all the way...I'm partial to the old EK hatch but I doubt you'd find one with less than twelve billion miles that doesn't have a Coke can exhaust.

You can beat on those good and hard for years, Honda makes tanks.

I know it's the stock answer for these threads (with good reason) but how about an MX-5?

Or is that too masculine for you?

£1k will buy you enough MX-5 to work more often than not, that's for sure. And working on them is quite easy...

For a more recent car, maybe...

Any other reasonable suggestions?

Have you considered something... older? Like, older than you older?

Like this or this or this?

All available on classic car insurance... :D

I'm pretty sure Danny is looking for something more accomodating than a Matiz when he looked at 5-door hatchbacks :) I seem to remember the Matiz being too small for his needs to begin with.

You know, you could get a late 90's 3-series for that money :D

I'm nothing if not varied. :D

Older cars have their benefits. Pre-2003 car tax. Classic car insurance - which often doesn't care about age. Not losing your car in the car park next to all the other thrillingly-coloured Focstras. Easy to fix for an indentured slave/father when they break. Admiration from father for driving a car he wanted when you were his age.

There are downs. Security might need beefing up - no shielded locks, deadbolts, alarms or immobilisers. And they might break slightly more than a Focus (but slightly less than an Astra). And, commonly, the fuel economy isn't that great compared to more modern cars (though the E28 should be fine).

If you keep bringing up Vauxhalls as viable purchases, Daniel, I'm going to have to hit you.

Just get the frigging Focus and be done with it.

You wouldn't put out for Finchy in a Monza?

What are you, frigid?

Could be worse. He could still be talking about the Daewoo...

And just cause this is 'semi my thread as well, I guess I'll hijack.

Been getting a "rubbing" noise from front driver-side wheel. The kind that gets more frequent when you're going faster. Can only hear it when there's objects near the car to bounce the sound back in so from that I'm sure it's not a deeper issue.

Jack reckons it was brakes but it doesn't make any different a noise when braking. I'm hoping it's not the wheel bearing starting to go. If it is I'm guessing they'll bring it up in the MOT which is only a month away, which is abit annoying because it's not grinding as such. Thoughts?
