First impressions PC2

Anyone did the Ginetta prouving ground yet with the GT4 at Cadwell GP? So far the handful of cars I drove with a controller felt great out of the box. This one is a bit meh and feels twitchy and oversteery, kinda PC1 style. :) Any suggestion how to change that?

My first impression of PCars2 is that I have to find some FFB settings as out of the box I wasn't impressed. Looks great and for the most part sounds great too. The wealth of options is unbelievably impressive.

I'm looking forward to trying my other plans drives though.

My first impressions of actual racing are not there yet..
2 hours fiddling with settings.
1) Could not setup triple monitors with correct FOV. When I did the configuration thing I was sitting in the back seat or so. Thanks to iRacing member helping me out with this! Not sure if this is a bug but I was not the only one with this issue (in iracing pcars 2 thread).
2) FFB only usable after Jack Spade's settings and still trying to find best balance. Note - I use OSW DD wheel so not a standard case.
3) FPS even on a monster pc is not good.. Still trying to find optimal settings.
4) Menu browsing - not sure if I do something wrong but using keyboard (up/down) and mouse at the same time is a mess. How could this even pass Q&A? Or I'm the only one having issues.
5) Some in-car controls are hidden menu within menu (like change traction control in 488 GTE). Why there is no direct button mapping for TC +/- like for brake bias? Also, regarding some other value changing. I mapped FFB +/- to some buttons but when changing it I don't see value changes on screen..
The thing is that all these small issues are right there without even racing. Attention to details - that's what is missing.

It has been a conscious decision not to use wheel vibration, as it may interfere with the smaller FFB details. So a development decision.
If that really is the case, then all my other issues with the game are moot as that is a definite deal breaker. Wheel vibration ads immensly to the imerssion for me at least, and the lack of it sticks out especially when my other sims have it.

Ok, SMS have worked absolute wonders with this game. I've just checked the first impressions thread over at Race Department and there is only one person who has so far had anything bad to say (and that seems like a case of very severe trolling!). They are being overwhelmingly positive about the game and they were mostly really hard on the first game. To have won over RD is a sure sign that SMS have done a fantastic job.

First impressions are good.

More of a evolution than a revolution. Still need to fiddle with the FFB as coming from AC makes it the weakest point.

I'm on PS4 standard so graphics are as good as the console gets.

Overall, it is worth the fuss and by far the most complete game in the market.

Good first impressions so far.

  • FFB settings are much easier to understand and it now feels better on the G29 than PC1.
  • Photomode is vastly improved with much easier controls.
  • Physics so far feel really good on Informative, tried some cars at Knockhill and they felt excellent.
  • Oversteer seems better simulated now, I can catch slides better when the tires are slipping on track.

Looks like a good improvement over PC1 after playing a little while.

Do a race at Historic Monza, the cars hold the banking so well. Also I recommend Fuji. :D

Yup, I’ve noticed that as well. I’m surprised though, didn’t think those guys would be able to be objective based on prior history.

In AC I raced historic Monza for such a long time I can almost drive it with my eyes closed....Thus I also had to do a hotlap at Historic Monza in PCars2. That moment you think you can go full throttle but the track is slightly different with that extra "chicane". BAM another car to the junkyard.:lol:.
Historic Spa is also very very nice!

First impressions - feeling a bit underwhelmed. So far the cars I've tried have been harder to drive not easier on or over the limit - I'm using PS4 Pro with wheel. Tried some classic rallycross round Lydden Hill went for a joker lap on the first lap and lost all FFB - it was back after the race. Couldn't get the multi class to work - it only wanted me to pick Group 5 as my second class.

AI cars steer in a series of jerks like someone tapping to steer - very noticeable at Willow Springs. Some very strange choices with car classes which hopefully will be changed. Picked a 1973 BMW - opponents 1966 Ford ok, 2015 Toyota not ok! Tried the Chevy Camaro Trans Am 1969 - lovely car, but why is it with a Ferrari Daytona? the closest match is a Merc AMG 6.8 - they raced together in the ETCC.

Diasappointed with the quiet sound - it was louder than other games, but was easy enough to turn down - now I can't get the tactile effects to work at all with my Buttkicker as there is such a weak signal.

Brands Hatch in autumn - nice leaves. Chevy Camaro Trans Am - nice visual effects in the screen glass.

It will take me a long time to get used to. I race with default setups and they don't seem very good at the moment - I heard that the default setups for hand controllers with extra understeer have been loaded, but the ones with extra oversteer for wheels have not been patched in for consoles yet - this might explain why I'm struggling with cars which I loved on PC1.

Gear shift delay on older cars seems longer and therefore more realistic, but sound of Escort RS1600 definitely not as good as previous game.

Depending on the track you may be limited on cars. I got 4 classes and 31 cars at Fuji.

Thrustmaster TX.
Spent 2 hours sliding the Caterham 620R (ABS only) through the corners in the snow on the Nordschleiffe and on the sunny California highway.
100% smile on my face. Fantastic job!

I just checked the weather report. It seems that hell has frozen over and may be included as DLC for Project Cars 3:sly:

Things i've noticed from my first day with PC2:

The negative things:

1. When skipping a training or qualifying session the AI puts down lap times 5s faster than in the session for some reason. This bug was also in PC1 and I really can't believe that this bug is still alive.

2. I started my career in the GT4 European series with the Cayman MR. First race in Austria just fine for me, getting comfortable with the car and the setup and putting down some good lap times. The second race in Silverstone, the car was just horribly understeering in every corner that resulted in overheating tires. I tried everything in the car's setup with adjusting tire pressure or the suspension to lower the understeering. The only thing that got me rid of understeering was to change to hard slick tires. But that also changed after a few laps when the tires heated up.

3. First corner after the main straight at cota is very buggy. In the mid of the corner it seems that the speed of the game increases which makes it pretty hard to get a good exit. After the corner everything is fine.

4. When doing the formation lap and you are at the end of the field it is pretty hard to catch up to the front of the field because the AI lefts too much space between each other. In the opposite, if you are the leader of the field you need to watch out for the AI for various reasons. It happens often, that if you don't drive in the same line as the following car it will always overtake you before the lights go green. And if you try to keep up you will get a penalty. Also it happens that the following car randomly glitches and speeds through the last corner before the race start, that results in losing the first place.

5. Why did they mess up the sound of the 650s gt3? I think this car uses now the same sound as the amg gt3 and i really don't know why. It is one of my fav. cars and i really can't drive it because the sound annoys me that much. What frustrates me even more is the fact that the mp4 gt3 in pc1 had a very decent sound note and I can't see why they removed/changed it.

Nevertheless I really had a lot of fun in the first day and I hope some of these problems will be fixed.

This, it´s gonna take a while to get used to. There´s a certain type of slide that you can catch, but i found myself all over the track with a few cars i used to drive in Pcars1. In low speed situations there seems to be an exaggeration of spinning and losing control, so it was weird for me after all the talk to find out that driving is actually harder than in AC or iRacing.

Don´t get me wrong, i´m absolutely loving the game, but some things will take a lot of time to get use to, specially braking and downshifting older cars.

Still haven't played enough to give a full impression, in my opinion, but I can say this: controller driving is much improved. A pleasure to play, compared to PCARS 1. Great to see the vast amount of options and there was one or two, that I didn't expect, still very welcome. The game really stands up to the motto "Anytime. Anywhere" and I like it for that.

Also, I'd like to give a special congratulations to Stephen Baysted for some of the best, if not the best, OSTs I have heard in a racing game and even amongst music, in general. Eau Rouge, The Green Hell, Race to Win, Driven are all masterpieces. However, Guts and Glory stands above them all. Emotional, powerful, describes just how high the stakes are in racing, a truly fitting tribute to what you can gain but what you can lose as well.

Ok, false alarm. The trolls are still there, just in a different thread :)

First impressions after about 6 hours on PC.

Wow, just wow!
This game takes PCars1, that I already loved, and makes it so much better.

From the easy triple screen setup to the FFB, physics, immersion, it is a joy.
I'm going to be spending a lot of time racing in this game.

Does anyone think it feels more like AC now in terms of handling? More detailed, more nuances.

Theres quite a few cars im struggling to control, that were fine in Pcars 1. Such as the Zakspeed Capri. I can lose it easily on that first corner at Knockhill. Admittedly it is tricky with it being downhill.

My PC version of the Collectors Edition was delivered tonight at about 7pm. First of all, very nice collecters edition! Clearly it's a much better game graphically on PC compared to my Xbox copy. FFB with my CSW V2 is just wonderful. Seems much more grown up and smooth compared to the same wheel on the xbox version. I'd say it's pretty damn close to AC now, very similar feel. It tells you exactly what is happening with the car and sliding the Ginetta Jr around in career is an absolute joy.

One thing I never tried during development was VR. I wanted to save that for release and not spoil it. It's better compared to PC1. With my i7 & 1080Ti I can almost run everything maxed and it looks wonderful in VR. But couple VR with the vastly improved tyre model and ffb and it's easily the best sim racing game experience I have had.

I posted this on the official forums but might as well copy here.

Xbox- controller impression.

It is perhaps a touch unfair to compare this game with Pcars version 10 patch as we need to see where this game ends up after the boys have smoothed the edges. But these are my first impressions-

Xbox controller is a vast improvement and does live up to what Ian and the American were saying over at GTplanet. Time and effort has clearly been put into making it a nice experience. So a big thumbs up there.

Frame Rate is very sweet straight out of the box and that is amazing considering how many things the game is running behind the scenes. Thumbs up.

Menu navigation and UI- Wow! This is a huge improvement. Everything is so easy to find and I no longer have to wait 30 minutes for the game to save my settings. And that menu music is the blast and really pumps you up to race- I think of Ayrton Senna on the edge at Monaco when I hear it. Huge thumbs up.

Particle effects- Another thing that is stellar. Watching a rain squall sweep across the track or fog wrap around the pavilion stands is quite an incredible thing. I have yet to race in any game that comes to this level of detail. And the snow effect as it hits the windscreen is awesome. Huge thumbs up.

Variety of tracks and cars- No other game comes close. Great to have the new manufactures in there and the livetrack 3.0 makes each track feel so different between summer and winter. Thumbs up.

Audio- I realize that many people here are loving the audio, but I am finding that this is a letdown. The one thing that separated Pcars 1 from the crowd was the beasty audio. Sure, the game may not have correctly realized each and every car engine but it was a blast. I race on headphones but if I did use normal sound the windows on my house would shake on anything over 25. I found on this game I had to turn my television volume up to 60 to even approach that epic sound. That might seem an easy fix but I cannot help but wonder if I am trying to magnify something that isn't there.

And what is going on with the over the top tire squeal when the car brakes?? It sounds like 10 hamsters have been shoved into a food mixer and is not realistic at all. Lowering the tire sound down to 40 alleviated the problem somewhat but that is something I never had to do in Pcars 1. Lucky we have settings for that or the game would be too annoying to play.

The other sounds and variety are fine but the game does remind me of Forza 4-6 where the audio is going backwards with each new version. Thumbs down.

Practice mode- I really liked Pcars 1 over this one. It saved my settings and I could just pick up where I left off. This one keeps reverting to some crazy predetermined thing that makes me have to change the time and season all the time and one track is loaded different to the other just so that SMS can show off their livetrack. Thumbs down.

Showcase mode- I was not expecting something approaching Forza vista but any sort of improvement would have been nice. Now I cannot even spin the camera around the car to look at the decals or anything. Why include the mode at all?? Big thumbs down.

I have yet to even try out a race with the AI or career mode as I am taking my way slowly through the game and enjoying each part. My straight out of the box experience was fun overall and look forward to the coming patches.
