Who will win the Driver's Championship?

  • Total voters
    73
  • Poll closed .
Jordan appealed Jarno Trulli's disqualification from the United States Grand Prix in 2001 that cost them 5th in the constructors' and had his 4th place reinstated during the winter break, but that is nowhere near the scale of deciding entire championships in this way.

Is there any kind of clause under the grounds of "putting the sport into disrepute" that would be at play here?
There's a fair few people who'd be out on their behinds if that clause was ever seriously enforced.

As a US follower, no idea who he is, but they're making a note of the lawyer/QC for Merc.

Safety Car overtake dismissed.

If FIA overturns the result I won't watch F1 next year. Yeah, I know they won't go bankrupt because of that but I'm a man with principles.

48.8 dispute is dismissed

The Stewards consider that the protest is admissible.

Having considered the various statements made by the parties. The Stewards determine that although Car 33 did at one stage, for a very short period of time, move slightly in front of Car 44, at a time when both cars where accelerating and braking, it moved back behind Car 44 and it was not in front when the Safety Car period ended (i.e. at the line).

Accordingly, the Protest is dismissed and the Protest Deposit is not refunded.

Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits

I still can’t get over they just ignored their own rules and made up something on the fly.

It’s like adding time after the super bowl was over and giving the losing team the ball on the 1 yard line for no reason besides it would be entertaining.

There is literally nothing that can be done to "correct" this. The only things that can be done are to fix the rule system so this doesn't happen again (not just the lapped cars rule, but if a driver doesn't maintain pace following the SC or as the SC, he can be penalized) and Masi resigning.
Yes there is, they are supposed to consider the result had the rules been followed correctly. In which case the race finishes under safety or Verstappen has to pass all of the cars between him and Hamilton and then pass Hamilton to win in the final lap. What we got was half and half, which isn’t a rule.

New rules won’t fix the rules not being followed either. The rules are fine, the Race Director just chose to ignore them.

If we're using an American Football analogy here, I would say it's giving the opposing team a 5th down in error and they win on what is the last play of the game.

Fun fact: this actually did happen. The result stood.

Just keep refreshing this page to see the official documents first.

I think it’s actually much worse than just giving an extra down.

I think the full analogy is this:

A team is losing by 5 points with 10 seconds left in the game. They have the ball on their own 20 and it’s 4th and 10. The losing team fails to gain a first and the game should be over.

Instead the league just arbitrarily says the losing team now gets the ball at the opposing 1 yard line and a fresh set of downs for some unknown reason that goes against the written rules.

Not only did they get another shot but they gained field position to a spot it would be damn impossible to fail at.

Max was gifted such a random benefit against the stated rules, it makes no sense.

Haven't watched the race since it was literally, wake up and go to work for me. From all that I read, Hamilton did get unfairly screwed over by bad officiating. They played the best option possible given the rules but the rules ended up being flipped anyway.

Conversely, you can't really penalise Verstappen. Don't like the guy but he merely got the benefits from the bad officiating he had no control over. It fell on his hands but that's the thing, it fell.

But let's congratulate the real winners this season... Netflix.
