Heading into only the third round of the season and we have our first driver change, as Yuki Tsunoda swaps into Liam Lawson's seat at Red Bull for a first Grand Prix with the top team at his home event. McLaren have proven to be the team to beat so far this season, although Ferrari got the plaudits at the Sprint race last time out. Suzuka is having it's second race at the start of the F1 year, moving away from Typhoon season. The famous Cherry Blossom photos of the circuit from last year show what F1 has been missing from April races for the JAPANESE GRAND PRIX!

It's only been FP1 but let's overreact a little bit and talk about Lawson: What, uh, what's he doing? He's doing better than he was, right off the bat, but now he's getting outplaced by Hadjar.

Again, it's only FP1 but I mean...Yuki though.

Yeah, agreed only FP1 and I'm getting ready to jump on the Yuki hype train! If that performance keeps up, he's starting on the right foot for sure. Lawson on the other hand, not looking so good right now. Really curious how this goes between those guys this weekend.

Mercedes is looking quite good with Russell.
McLaren well ahead again once they get everything hooked up!

Doohan has destroyed his car at the T1 barriers after about 3 laps only. Not ideal after missing FP1

Fair chance they'll be 2 Japanese drivers this weekend after that. Doohan looked very sore, and it was a monumental hit. Was perfectly flush with the wall when hit, and the car didn't rotate off the wall, all the energy in one shot.

They are going to have to do something about those grass fires!

McLaren again seems to be the clear leading car over 1 lap. Everyone else after them seems very very close.

I did not know that they have to manually turn off drs at some places. Super sketchy for Doohan.

In theory, DRS deactivates automatically when the driver brakes, however as these cars are producing so much downforce he might have tried a slight feather, forgetting about the DRS.

Has anywhere suggested this is the case? I can't imagine DRS is manual otherwise there would be a million penalties for it through the year.

Palmer mentioned it on F1TV. He said there are a couple of circuits on the calendar where you have to do it manually. It will only close on it’s own if you lift or brake.

It was pretty reckless of him to go full send like that so early though, Colapinto is now closer to getting that seat.

Here's a very comprehensive breakdown of the crash, showing there was more to it than "not pressing the button".

I laugh pretty much every time I hear Leclercs radio, he's always so snappy with that guy. He does sound pretty dumb sometimes though tbf.

Caught up on the FP1 and 2 highlights.

Jesus... glad Doohan was OK. That was an almighty shunt.

I had forgotten how good the Red Bulls looks in white.

It seems like the company that owns the track and makes lawn mowers would have some understanding of how grass grows (and doesnt).

What a **** show, FP3 under red again for a grass fire after only 6 min.

Unless they burn all the grass which I doubt the FIA will allow because it changes the track
There's no need for that. Just hydrate the greenery. It's so simple.
Jacques sharing they've only treated the grass where there's already been a fire....
I heard that. What kind of half-assed solution is that?

Qualifying is going to be something, that's for sure.

Cursed scenario from Reddit.

Liam sets a Q2 time. Yuki in the bottom 5 gets hit by a red flag as the session is ending and doesn't get a lap in.

Considering his current performance getting in the top10 in practices, I think red bull will get enough data from this one weekend alone
If he makes it into Q2, that is more than enough

Anyone else having issues with the F1TV app using a Chromecast?

I can watch on my phone just fine, but if I cast to my Chromecast it says coverage has concluded on qualifying. It did work for the qualifying pre show though...

Edit: and now it's giving errors on my phone for the live stream... Basically I have no way to watch now 😔

Saying you cant focus is not the worst thing you could say.

There was that one comment by a driver that went on to say others are faster than me.
