He locked up and it seemed to be under control, then he stomped on the throttle and oversteered crashing into the barrier.

I think the time was already lost under the lock up.

He was right on the edge of control until he went past it. It seems like he knew he was at the limit on the 1st lap and dug deep to get the extra hundredths.

The driveshaft/axle is definitely broken which could also have damaged the gearbox's insides.

If I were Toto Wolff I'd offer Bottas a massive cash bonus for this race if he finishes 2nd. Just to motivate him, his role, especially on turn one will be hugely, hugely important for both championship races.

The driveshafts link the gearbox to the rear wheels so if they get pushed in they could damage the gearbox necessitating a change

Hitting the throttle that hard was not the greatest idea no...

But I think it's happening a bit too quickly to be able to decide to abandon the lap completely at that point. That's a decision a driver would probably make after exiting the corner.
