26 corners of what would have been up there as one of the best Quali laps for the season. Then turn 27 happened...

That was definetely gona be a lap for the ages, I saw a beast driving in that car, have never seen anyone drove it better after that near miss at the start.

Max was out of control that whole lap. Finally caught up to him
He was right on the edge of control until he went past it. It seems like he knew he was at the limit on the 1st lap and dug deep to get the extra hundredths.

Asking from the point of a mechanical noob, what part damages the gearbox there? Looked like just the wishbones on first glance.
The driveshaft/axle is definitely broken which could also have damaged the gearbox's insides.

If I were Toto Wolff I'd offer Bottas a massive cash bonus for this race if he finishes 2nd. Just to motivate him, his role, especially on turn one will be hugely, hugely important for both championship races.

After that lockup, yes. Hitting the throttle after that was even more stupid.
Hitting the throttle that hard was not the greatest idea no...

But I think it's happening a bit too quickly to be able to decide to abandon the lap completely at that point. That's a decision a driver would probably make after exiting the corner.
