If Max does take a new gearbox he'll start behind both AlphaTauris and his teammate, none of which will put up much of a fight I imagine, so then he just has to deal with Norris and Leclerc and he can chase down the Mercs.

So no new gearbox for Max. I mean, Leclerc hit the wall much harder in Monaco and it was the driveshaft that was busted, not the gearbox. Hamilton's starting on older tyres and Bottas' starts are useless so if Max gets a good launch he could take the lead at turn 1.

If Max has done 6 or more races on that gearbox then he shouldn't get a penalty for changing it anyway. Unless I've mis-remembered that .

That solves that then.
Thanks for the tyre graphic. Going to be interesting seeing how the tyres stand up to the constant highspeed loading.

The F2 feature race is about to start.

Annnd the start is delayed due to repairing barriers, they could have done to sooner… 🙄

Edit: Cars to follow safety car to pit lane in opposite direction. wat

Lewis’ tires are 4 laps older and tmu, the tire degradation here isn’t that bad. There were additional comments that Lewis’ tires never got where they needed to be, so they may not be as worn.

I don’t think Bottas’ starts are useless but his defending against Max has been. Even with a narrow track & walls to “aid” him, I wouldn’t be surprised if Max gets by him.

I would still think it’s best to grab a new gearbox. His only challenge will be Lando & Charles to get back up to P3 although Charles has said he will change his driving to adapt to the outcome of what happened in Brazil. There was a story this morning that Marko apparently claimed the engineers assessed a zero risk but I don’t believe that.

Just caught up on the action, very interesting and such a weird way for VER to throw the lap away. Still anything can happen tomorrow, if he does start third, there is no doubt he's going to be trying something L1 T1.

The main thing I came away from the session though is wondering when the FIA are actually going to enforce their safety rules. They already say that you can't drive unnecessarily slowly generally, and re-iterated it this weekend for a specific section of track. So what happens? Pretty much all drivers go through those corners and along the straight at 20-30mph.

Other than a technical issue there is absolutely no necessary reason for an F1 car to go 20-30mph. They all did it but HAM was the one they had the telemetry on.

Give the entire grid a penalty. It doesn't matter if it has no net result. Send a message that they aren't going to wait for the inevitable airplane crash. They won't though.

The best enforcement might be to penalize a previous lap for travellling at less than half the average speed of the prior lap. But there's an inherent problem with quantifying that information; the driver is headed to the pits, and there's a 50/50 chance they don't cross the timing beam at the pit-lane start/finish stripe.

Well, maybe they can make some use of those so-called AWS analytics. If the in/out lap(s) are run to 80% of the average overall qualifying/practice time (except for those without an obvious problem)during the official session, then the prior counted lap time shall be banished to the Vortex of Infinite Suckitude* and the driver's time disallowed. But this is also the result of all the silly rules on tire usage and mechanical consumption.

* FIA official terminology; 39.8(e) as example.
** less-official than above

Session aborted. Wtf.

Edit: Red flag out, at least two crashes already. Pourchaire stalled it and got hit pretty hard.

Edit2: No replays or shots of the cars or drivers yet, this is not good.

Keeping this in spoilers b/c we don't know the full condition of everything yet, but will remove (or mods will remove) if the worst is announced.

Reading the race has been called off due to another red flag incident; someone lost the rear and another collected them, drivers Samaia and Caldwell listed.

I believe it was Fittipaldi that I read had some blood loss due to a leg injury, according to those listening to an Italian broadcast.

Being conscious is naturally a good thing. However the use of the helicopter irks me a little. Hoping for the best recovery for both.

Race start in half hour. Am in fact hoping for a clean and boring one.

Horner showing a lot of confidence, but Newey definitely looked like he was being more realistic and hoping for the best after doing all they could.
