Think about it, he locked up, running deep into the corner, then punched the throttle at a pretty harsh angle for the car and tires to handle.

These things happen, but for Max, they always say "He doesn't care, he's not feeling the pressure.", but it's mistakes like these that separate that rookies from the champions, just as Lewis locked up in the pits in China 2007 and lost the championship overall.

I'm sure Max will be careful on street circuits from now on, like Hamilton being weary about taking pitstops.

Call me projecting, but there is absolutely no way that Max isn't feeling pressure from this championship.

That was going to be a lap for the ages. Pushing the limits at every corner. Very surprised he made such a big mistake. Reaction of his dad and the RB pit wall tell you all you need to know.

One corner and this would have been a legendary lap.

Appreciate the tech 101 on the gearbox Fred & Henry.

So, surely Red Bull adopts the penalty & replaces the gearbox, right? Max is quick enough to make up 5 place across the field, otherwise, do they really want to risk what Ferrari went through in Monaco?

They'll certainly do a thorough checkup on it. But given that it will be hard to overtake here, and the will want to be very close to Mercedes for a potential pitlane overtake, I doubt they'll just preemptively change it.

Did FIA say something about bottas collision with the Alfa Romeo?
May still become a legendary lap. In the sense of 'the lap that lost him the championship'
That trophy goes to the opening lap in Silverstone where one driver punted his competitor of the track and into the barrier.

There's been a nice ribbon of chaos wound through this season, so many twists have made it really compelling. Have we just witnessed a Vettel @ Hockenheim style season defining moment by Max? Really fancy a winner takes all final race...

Good comeback for Lewis and a terrible final corner from Max. Easy for us to play backseat driver and change it, but he got nearly .5s up from his bravery and that's what cost him.

On the other end of the spectrum, is the FIA ever going to do something that works to stop this queuing crap? The whole "gentleman's agreement" is sheer bunk, apparently. We've seen it for dozens of quali sessions over the last few years and I'm just glad no one has been hurt... but I do not want that luck to run out, even in the hands of the world's best formula drivers.

That one goes to the first lap in Silverstone.

Last time I checked, which was 3 minutes ago, Max is still leading the championship, despite Silverstone, Baku (which was a wash anyway as Hamilton didn't score points), Hungary and Monza (a wash again). If he comes out of Jeddah 2nd in the championship, it's all on him and this mistake. Get over it and admit he's potentially ruined it by himself.

I really hope next years cars actually allow for much closer running, which would hopefully put an end to this

"We're tired of Lewis winning so easily".

Closest championship battle in years

"Ugh, Max would've already had this season wrapped up ages ago".

Hard to take when your favourite driver makes a mistake that cant be blamed on anyone but himself. Not to worry if this is title defining... "whether I win or lose the chamionship it wont make much difference to my life" Max Verstappen 2021

Max doesn’t know what happened in his crash, and Helmut Marko is protesting Lewis’ non penalty. Status quo at Red Bull this weekend.
I read Red Bull wasn't going to protest the penalty? I mean, the explanation why he wasn't penalized seemed pretty straight forward.

I saw it on Planet F1, which I’ll admit isn’t the best source of information. But Marko was quoted saying they were going to appeal it: https://www.planetf1.com/news/red-bull-appeal-lewis-hamilton-verdicts/
Isn't the whole thing Max got penalized for was b/c there were 2 physical, yellow flags being waved & tmu, the physical flag takes precedence over the lights regardless of mishap by the race directors?

But, anyway, this is where I read Red Bull wasn't.

And so they ruddy well shouldn't if you ask me! There's hardly any toys left in the pram for heaven's sake!

To give the circuit some credit (for once), there was a surprising amount of overtakes, racing and 3-wide racing going in on the Formula 2 races. That said there was stupid crashes quite a lot during the race, and drivers cutting the first chicane seem to need to give the place up immediately or get a 5 second penalty.

Hopefully, the F1 race will provide more of the same.

Aged like a fine wine. Still not all is said. With such a risky track and danger looming at every corner Lewis will have to be extra careful during the whole race. First thing will be avoid start, turn 1 carnage. If Max doesn't have to change his gearbox he will start 3rd. He doesn't have anything to lose so I can imagine him taking a kamikaze dive into turn one and possibly taking Lewis out.

If Hamilton survives the start then I guess lapping backmarkers will be very risky as well. The walls will obviously be a constant threat but the thing I'm wary is that the track has such a high average speed that perhaps we'll see Pirelli tires blowing up a la Baku this year.

I know people like to dismiss Bottas, but he’s repeated a few times that he’s going to do as much as he can to make Verstappen’s charge as difficult as possible.

With him and Lewis up front, I can’t wait to see what transpires.

Just caught up on the action, very interesting and such a weird way for VER to throw the lap away. Still anything can happen tomorrow, if he does start third, there is no doubt he's going to be trying something L1 T1.

The main thing I came away from the session though is wondering when the FIA are actually going to enforce their safety rules. They already say that you can't drive unnecessarily slowly generally, and re-iterated it this weekend for a specific section of track. So what happens? Pretty much all drivers go through those corners and along the straight at 20-30mph.

Other than a technical issue there is absolutely no necessary reason for an F1 car to go 20-30mph. They all did it but HAM was the one they had the telemetry on.

Give the entire grid a penalty. It doesn't matter if it has no net result. Send a message that they aren't going to wait for the inevitable airplane crash. They won't though.
