I've been playing a review copy for nearly a week now and have mixed feelings on the game.
I used to be a hardcore Gran Turismo fan, soaking up every little screenshot and preview of the original game ahead of it's release, watching a demo disc video nearly a hundred times and being amazed at how the cars bounced over the kerbs of Trial Mountain. I played the game to death, and went on to pick up every GT on or just after release, apart from the Psp outing.
I loved Forza 2 also, admired it's clean racing A.I and online community. Forza 3 looked to be ready to set a new benchmark for an all round package. Now I'm so sure, and rather than throwing myself further in the game, find myself anxiously waiting the arrival of GT5.
I could talk about all the little problems with FM3 for hours, complaining about the mind-numbingly long loading times, weak force-feedback on anything that isn't front wheel drive, and the lack of controller customization that means its impossible to look left and right when using the official Microsoft FFB wheel.
Ultimately, my dissapointment boils down to one thing. The game is too easy. There is too much grip. I'm not the Stig, and yet found it impossible to lose control of a Ford GT around Fujimi Kaido. Sure, pushing it I got the back end out plenty, but found it way too easy to correct.
Anyone who enjoyed the challenge of nursing the turbo-lag of an F40 around Suzuka on Nx tyres in GT5 will be dissapointed. I like to feel challenged. To be driving on a knife edge, having my racing credentials questioned when on the limit of anything with a reputation of being 'a bit of a handfull'. I just don't get that with FM3.
The good points of the games are many, you all know them.
Is this a day one purchase? If you have a 360, yes. I wouldn't however, buy a new console just for this game.
