Apostrophes, of course, denoting missing letters in a concatenated contraction ("it is" -> "it is" -> "it's"). So... where do folk get "maths" from?

It's a matter of preference, to me. Consider the non-standard* word 'paras' being short for paratroopers or, very colloquially, paramedics. Or Cossies for Cosworths. But I could be wrong on mathematics even being a plural word.

I see those as being similar to maths being short for mathematics, and while I have always used the term 'maths', I can see how one would prefer the term 'math'. There's nothing grammatically or semantically wrong with either word, maths is simply a collocation that is heavily used.

*It being non-standard is probably not the best way to justify my point, but the example is still valid.
