Funny/Strange News Stories

An otherwise cautionary story about bum jobs and those who now regret the procedure has given us this gem of information:

The associate body responsible for cosmetic surgery in the UK is the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons or BAAPS.

^BAAPS have been around since 1982. I remember thinking that the acronym was funny as a teenager though.

Heh...

Conservative radio host, provocateur and "boomer" doesn't like term, compares it to "n-word" on Twitter in since deleted tweet.

The Monday tweet garnered attention in the form of thousands of replies.

"Just because something is insulting, it doesn't make it the N-word sporto. Nobody died connected to it. Nobody was enslaved or segregated in conjunction with it. Just stop," "The Mo'Kelly Show" host replied. "You want the pain of the word, just none of the lynchings, disenfranchisement and hatred. Hush."

"Jeopardy!" winner Ken Jennings also responded to the tweet: "Don't worry, I'm Mormon like this guy so it's okay: I can call him a boomer with the hard 'r'."

Another response tweet that shared a quote from stand-up comedian John Mulaney received more than 20,000 retweets and 80,000 likes: "If you're comparing the badness of two words and you won't even say one of them, that's the worse word."

Even Dictionary.com slammed Lonsberry's comparison.

"Boomer is an informal noun referring to a person born during a baby boom, especially one born in the U.S. between 1946 and 1965," the digital dictionary tweeted. "The n-word is one of the most offensive words in the English language."
I think the funniest part of this is he was once fired from a radio gig for comments his employer believed were racist, and was later re-hired after having completed sensitivity training. One wonders if this response is a result of that training or if he's crying because he identifies as a member of the group being derided.

That's a common misconception as to what is 'dead'. Dead is when your brain stops functioning not heart.

I'm not sure that's always legally true. The legal definition of death is more complicated. Married couples who die simultaneously in a car accident is one example. Another is people who arrive at hospitals in a state of clinical death but for whom Death Pronounced isn't until after two hours of resus work.

Yesterday I witnessed a nuclear submarine deployment the likes of which I have never seen in over 50 years of observing them. It left from a pier at sub base Kitsap that has not been used for many years and is scheduled for demolition. Normally all deployments have a fleet of escort and service vessels accompanying them, about 10 in number, some heavily armed. This deployment had no escort whatever except for two of very smallest patrol boats with blue wig-wags usually reserved for base perimeter patrol.

Wrong thread?

Sounds kinda strange I think. Though, not in a manner representative of this thread
That's why I was compelled to ask if it was posted in the wrong thread. It amounts to "I saw something I haven't seen before" and completely misses the second half of the thread title.

And sure the occurrence seems strange in the context of the post, but an actual news story would establish launch protocols (I presume they exist) from which this one is supposed to have deviated.

An actual news story would also provide documentation beyond simply that which is written, or face appropriate criticism.

Could be. But which other?
Indeed.

I was sort of surprised by the absence of any kind of theory--crackpot or otherwise--that attempts to explain such an occurrence. Had there been one, there's an obvious thread (of which your posts account for nearly 15% of total postings) for that. Having said this, there's plenty of opportunity for one in the future.

Alternatively, Naval Base Kitsap is, if I'm not mistaken, positioned on the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington state, located somewhere.

Then there's the matter of you not offering anything to positively establish any foundation for the supposed occurrence in objective reality or truth or...whatever...so perhaps this is a more appropriate venue? Now I don't mean to suggest that, in posting what you did, you intended to deceive; I believe you believe you witnessed what you say you witnessed.

But why did it have to be posted in an existing thread? I find it hard to believe you've ever hesitated to create a new thread for subject matter that apparently fits no other. I imagine doing so satisfies some sort of meaning or purpose for you, and that you feel it's your responsibility to do so.

Could I ask you to report it for off-topic, please? Perhaps a mod would have the best idea.
I figured I'd just ask if you posted in the wrong thread, thanks. I've made similar mistakes--if not the exact same one--and I imagine others have as well. Threads do tend to blur together at times.

And perhaps a mod would have the best idea, but if you look in the upper right-hand corner of your own post, you'll surely discover that such a privilege is not only made available to others.

Usually, but Diane Abbott is definitely challenging that definition.

In other news, there's a LOT to unpack in this story about a drunk Russian historian who fell into a river while wearing a backpack containing his 24-year old girlfriend's dismembered arms, not least the fact he'd planned to commit suicide dressed as Napolean after disposing of her body...

USS Olympia, I think. That was heading home to be blown up after an incredible round-the-world goodbye voyage including meeting up with HMS Trafalgar for barbecue bollockry. Not sure this is the thread for that, probably America.

Daily.

It's a long time since I heard of a crazy who believed he was Napoleon, it seems in this case that he was world-credited as an expert in the subject. Less expert in the drunken disposal of bits of women in icy rivers, but you can't have it all.
