Funny/Strange News Stories

THEY shouldn't have too much trouble paying the fine — the billionaire owners of these supercars have just bought Harrods.
The Qatari royal family had a rude introduction to London parking laws when a ticket inspector clamped their exclusive motors — worth more than £1.5MILLION — as they sat outside their own shop.

The £1.2million Koenigsegg CCXR and £350,000 Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce were illegally parked outside the posh Knightsbridge department store, bought by the family three months ago, last week

At least it was a good message.

Weatherman Apologises For 'Giving The Finger'

Tomasz Schafermaker made the gesture at presenters Simon McCoy and Fiona Armstrong on the BBC News channel.

They said his forecast would be "100% accurate and provide all the detail you could possibly want".

The flustered weather presenter then realised he had been caught on camera and tried to cover up what he was doing by scratching his chin.

Watch the video, the funny part is how he tries to cover it up.

People dying isn't funny, unless they Darwin themselves.

With this in mind  fail!oneoneone

(potted summary - drunk man tries to jump harbour wall in Rover; doesn't succeed)

I'm not sure the eye witness can be trusted after telling the inquest "The car was accelerating violently"

Bit of background for this one.

There was recently a situation in the UK with a complete nutter called Raoul Moat. He shot a couple of people, then went to ground in a north-eastern village called Rothbury. It took the cops a few days to find him, then he committed suicide by shotgun after being tasered.

A subsequent image challenge on B3ta (NSFW - think of it as a mature, non-anonymous 4chan, without the porn) featured this as an entry:

The Daily Star picked it up instantly and ran with the story that Rockstar was planning GTA: Rothbury. The Star even went to the trouble of interviewing the girlfriend of the one man Moat managed to kill about the "sick" game - without bothering to check it didn't exist:

The Daily Star
FURY erupted last night over plans for a Raoul Moat book, movie and game… before the man he killed has even been laid to rest.

A book on the crazed killer is due out in weeks and film companies are lining up bids for the rights.

And last night gaming websites showed the cover of Grand Theft Auto Rothbury – a version of the XBox hit Grand Theft Auto.

Sadly for "reporter" Jerry Lawton, the internet noticed. The Star pulled the article from their site - but too late, and had to apologise two days later:

On 21 July we published an article claiming that the video games company Rockstar Games were planning to release a version of their popular Grand Theft Auto video games series titled Grand Theft Auto Rothbury.

We also published what we claimed would be the cover of this game, solicited comments from a family member impacted by the recent tragedy and criticised Rockstar Games for their alleged plans.

We made no attempt to check the accuracy of the story before publication and did not contact Rockstar Games prior to publishing the story. We also did not question why a best-selling and critically acclaimed fictional games series would choose to base one of their most popular games on this horrifying real crime event.

It is now accepted that there were never any plans by Rockstar Games to publish such a game and that the story was false. We apologise for publishing the story using a mock-up of the game cover, our own comments on the matter and soliciting critical comments from a grieving family member.

We unreservedly apologise to Rockstar Games and we have undertaken not to repeat the claims again. We have also agreed to pay them a substantial amount in damages which they are donating to charity.

Rockstar took them to court anyway.

Massive journalism fail.

It didn't stop there. The author responded to the outrage on his Facebook page.

Furthermore, speaking on his Facebook page Lawton chose to make a further dig at gamers.

"Baffled by the fury of adult gamers," writes Lawton. "These are grown (?!?) men who sit around all day playing computer games with one another who've today chosen to enter the real world just long enough to complain about my story slamming a Raoul Moat version of Grand Theft Auto!

You would think I'd denied the Holocaust!!! Think I'll challenge them to a virtual reality duel....stab....I win!!!"

The MOST offensive thing about this (to me at least) is that the Star referred to it as an Xbox hit!

The rest is just someone (several people) who is not very good at their job(s), being given a national stage on which to practice foot-in-mouth techniques.

Here's the original article, really sad, but is now a huge dent in the newspaper's pride.

You say that as if the daily star ever had had some to begin with. :sly:

More sad than funny:
