One of my favorites isn't so much a ricer story, but a story about being called a ricer and putting some people in their place ...
One Sunday, my friend and I took the Evos up to the local drag strip in Steele, AL. Our cars were nearly identical ... both graphite gray Evo IXs. Mine is an MR with the 6-speed and his was a 5-speed GSR. He has a couple more mods and was around 2/10 quicker in the 1/4, partly due to mods and partly to gearing in the 5-speed. We are both around 350 to 360 whp.
Steele is known for taking an eternity to clean up any spills on the track, and we get stuck in the staging lanes after someone drops coolant on the track. We are side-by-side and are right behind two C5 Corvettes with older guys driving them. They get out and start talking. One guy seems to be explaining the basics of drag racing to the other, so we assume that it might be his first time at the track. To be nice, we get out and strike up a conversation with them.
They tell us about how they used to race back in the day and all kinds of things, but soon fall in to some drivel about Japanese cars and rice burners and how they will never be as good as America Muscle. MY friend and I are kinda of taken aback as we were just being nice.
The lanes finally start to move and they go through the water box, do fancy Corvette burnouts on their all-season tires and tear off down the strip. I want to say the fastest of the two was a 13.4 at like 104-ish. Not bad ...
My friend and I end up staging offset and racing other cars, running I think a 12.2 and a 12.4. We both trapped around 114 and beat both of the cars we raced.
We get back in the lanes for the next run and the Corvette guys walk over with confused looks on their faces. "What time did you just run?!"
"Yeah, they're both running a little slow in this heat." was the response I had to give. It was true ... my friend's PB at the time was an 11.9.
I can't stand people that can't respect different cars for what they can do.
