Seems like you didnt understand the direction of that post.

Havnt you seen those meme's of Fry from futurama with the quote "shut up and take my money"? Im pretty sure its along those lines.

Ohh, I thought it was the other way around. I'm such a idiot. :dunce:

Video was captured at the "15 Years of Gran Turismo" event at Silverstone Circuit. Sound was recorded as single-channel (mono) audio from TV's headphone jack. It sounded better in stereo from the TV's speakers.

Right from the description...

As you can hear, for most cars they still use a vintage Hoover sound (not sure it's this particular '54 version though) although some cars might sound more akin to a modern Dyson in the higher rev ranges.

But it seems more complex than I thought, for example in a lot of German cars you can hear a distinct AEG undertone.

So they do seem to have a large database including more obscure and long forgotten vacuum cleaners and a combination of these samples might produce that specific GT sound we're so familiar with.

I don't think the noise I just made after reading this was human.

And you wasted a whole new thread to whine about this??

Humans are the craziest peoples...

As far as i know there is nothing wrong with the samples. The engine sound samples (this if you have a good ear) are pretty good and clean. But then there are other things which make them terrible. For example the awfull gearbox whining is something which ruins a lot of the sound. Then the sound as almost no distortion, and it has no good quality lows (bass) to make it stand out. Then the engine sound is very low on volume. This things all combine to make a bad experience. I played GT5 on a 7.1 speaker setup with a really good bass, and the sound was alright, i mean, the proper engine samples where there, the realistic sound was there ("Realistic" in terms) but the gearbox always whining. I hate that.

That first video it even says it sounds better in person. and it s still beta why do idiots rip on PD when they don't even know what is going on

They are short and compressed so as to take up as little memory as possible. Short (looping) samples sound thinner for some reason, whilst compressed samples sound duller for obvious reasons.
The engine sound samples (this if you have a good ear) are pretty good and clean.

The "engine" sound is about the only accurate part most of the time. Too bad it's usually too loud, and that there's no intake noise to mask it. The exhaust samples are far too often for the wrong engine, but stock sounds are usually realistic, with the occasional hiccup.
Interior sounds are missing all the structurally-borne stuff, too.
But then there are other things which make them terrible. For example the awfull gearbox whinning is something which ruins a lot of the sound.

Don't use custom boxes. The game should cater better to this, by offering a larger range of parts.
Then the sound as almost no distortion, and it has no good quality lows (bass) to make it stand out.

The natural distortion should be (and is) inherent in the recordings. Artificial microphone distortion should be optional, but it'd be pretty cool if volume levels were properly modeled and inner-ear distortion applied accordingly.

The bass is there, it just won't be heard if you can't reproduce it with your hardware. PD should add optional phantom bass / "missing fundamental" psychoacoustic effects for those without the means.
Then the engine sound is very low on volume.

Turn it up, or fiddle with the dynamic range settings in the game and on your hardware. PD could perhaps offer two dynamic range options: one for the mix (listening environment and volume), one for the hardware (frequency and dynamics reproduction).
This things all combine to make a bad experience. I played GT5 on a 7.1 speaker setup with a really good bass, and the sound was alright, i mean, the proper engine samples where there, the realistic sound was there ("Realistic" in terms) but the gearbox always whinning. I hate that.

It is generally a bit bland, but the gearbox issue will probably stay. It'd be mitigated by some meaty intake sounds, though. :)

Some people would rather make assumptions.

I've been looking into engine sounds for the past 4 years, on and off, and I can tell you it takes a serious amount of research. In order to properly reproduce them, you need to understand their physical nature well beyond the usual studio-oriented sound recording approaches and naïve resynthesis methods. I've never bought so many books, or read as many technical papers, in my life.

Suffice it to say, if you think samples are all that's needed, you are missing most of the picture in your mind. The difference between naïvely used samples and a more in-depth approach applied properly would be like the difference between a simple, static textured background (e.g. a photograph, the analogue of a sound sample) and the interactive 3D scenery we have today.

The fact that he said research, and that the key "sound guys" are credited under "sound simulation" (there is a separate collection of sound designers in the long ending movie) should say a lot about what's going on.

I wouldn't hold your breath for the PS3, a lot of the memory released by going down the adaptive tessellation route (only need one detailed model instead of a detailed model and all its different LoD versions) seems to have been applied to the graphics: i.e. higher-res textures, esp. shadow maps and reflection / image-based lighting maps. There's also likely to be little free processing power to get really creative.

In contrast, the (relatively) massive bandwidth, parallel computing power and memory of the PS4's hardware will be very interesting for the possibilities of sound generation. Perhaps this, among other things, is why Kaz is keen to pursue a PS4 version of GT6 rather than a brand new game.

I hope you are right. If you are, PD could be ahead of the game once they get ahold of more processing power.

That's what I'm saying. It was just a D.E.M.O. plus no one played GT6 yet so I don't why those people are complaining. Than I and others get shut down for saying so. :sly:

I like how the OP is using Jordan's gameplay video as a example for sounds. IMO that's really rude and I'm surprised justice hasn't step forth yet.

6 months doesn't sound as enough time to fix an issue that's been existing for 15 years.

Also, if there's the need to take the samples again then there's absolutely no way 95% of cars are getting fixed.

I haven't heard a peep about improved sounds. The focus appears to be faster UI, more lifelike physics and a dollop of new tracks. Why the assumption we'll get better sounds? Hmm?

No one's assuming anything, we're merely hoping. As to the "why", it's high time that PD moved beyond the PS2's ability to process sound.

The samples I'm referring to are their engine recordings. A car sitting in a garage with its engine revving up and down sounds VERY different from an engine under load on a dyno or on the track.

If it were that difficult, then no one would be doing it.. but everyone is. EVERYONE. Except for Polyphony Digital. So, WTF?

You can't tell someone to shut up on the fourms. If it bothers you, than why did you read it? :irked:

Completely misunderstood what I meant there,It's sort.of.like shut up and take my money indicating that I want Griffith to be hired by PD now due to his vast knowledge.

Haha, yeah sorry about that. :guilty: ImaRobot told me what your post meant, I really misunderstood it. :P
