Give us better sounds - PLEASE !!

:sly: The fundamental difference here is what could be vs. what is. What is, sucks at the moment. We've been waiting for what could be for 15 years. It may come with GT6, it may not, no one knows at this point. If it does, great. If not, it's the same old same old for another few years. PD and Kaz don't exactly have a great track record in fulfilling promises so it is quite easy to remain highly skeptical.

Did you really have such a dislike for the sounds in the PS2, and as far back as the PS1 era? Or are you stretching it for (melo)dramatic effect?

I don't enjoy the sounds as they are, they just don't get me on that visceral level. But I see no reason to repeat that opinion over and over. That, Wanklehead, would be the makings of a looper.

I look forward to what will eventually come along, may talk about the possibilities, meanwhile tolerating what is the status quo. I do not see why that should incite any angst in others. Or is the angst reserved for Griffith exclusively? The one who has offered more insight into this topic than anyone else on this thread?

For the era, the earlier sounds were fine actually, yes I was a little melodramatic. But while much of the rest of the game has improved, the sounds have fallen far, far behind. I ran some shuffle lobbies tonight and every car was terrible. They don't even sound like cars most of the time, they sound like something completely artificially generated for about $10 on a Commodore 64.

I have no angst for Griffith, he actually knows what he's talking about. But all the technical knowledge in the world doesn't change that fact that the sounds are terrible...lol. We'll have to wait and see what GT6 is like. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

Have not noticed Griffith stating a like for the sound. Could have missed it though.

Oh, C64. How I love thee. It is astonishing what was squeezed out of that thing. From the fourth channel glitch with the sid chip, to the oscillating of two colours to raise the number of colours above a massive 16 predefined ones. It was a truly amazing time.

If, if, if....

That's a shame, considering that's what the next game, GT6, (which is the forum we are in now) is going to be released on.

Maybe a PS4/GT7 thread.... Finally better sounds!! (citation required)

In fairness, I've been saying all along that I'll only expect improved sounds on PS4, and my arguments have always been built around PD's apparent long-term strategy. Kaz mentioned the PS3, which I find exciting.

I've definitely become a focal point for people's disgust, though, which is fun. Never mind that I share their opinions in general (GT does need a general improvement). The difference is that I can see that progress has been made (from earlier games), is being made (GT5's sound engine, laying down the framework / foundation for future improvements), and we have been told that it will continue to be made (with a new way of generating sounds; but what, exactly?).

To consider what is possible is not to live in the realms of fantasy. I don't know how many times I need to say it: sound in games is not the state of the art. There are other areas which do some very interesting things, and many of them will translate to games. But nobody has any interest in that, seemingly, so maybe I will just leave that door shut (or let someone else battle the indignance).

I'd be surprised if PD do explain exactly how their new sounds work (for obvious reasons), so I probably should keep what limited insight I have to myself, certainly for the short term.

One thing that always bewilders me is how some people see my passion and desire for much better sound in games overall as some kind of assertion that GT has perfect sounds. I mean, that's a direct contradiction - but I guess that's the level of intelligence you have to deal with on the internet... :sly:

If GT6 and PS3 doesn't see these improvements I think it's easy to see why people are annoyed with PD, essentially wasting a whole generation trying to get something to work on PS3 rather than also making something good for the now like other developers. That seems to be a general philosophy for them though, hence premium cars more suited to PS4.

Yes it's great to futureproof anything you do but you can't forget about or ignore the current at the same time.

Sure, but I don't think that's happened yet. GT6 is promising a lot anyway that may mean the same sounds carried over from GT5 shouldn't dampen things too much, although it'd obviously be disappointing - not that I was ever expecting anything else. ;)

Passion and desire is often admired on these forums, an elitist, condescending, holier than thou attitude on the other hand often draws disgust on the internet, even from us less intelligent types. For the most part I don't see anyone assuming you mean that GT has perfect sounds, we just question your optimism when we have been waiting so long for decent sounds and have been disappointed so many times by poor game design effort and broken promises from PD. If that makes us less intelligent then so be it.

I don't do optimism, I'm British. And well done for assuming insults upon yourself.

Well I do and you don't speak for me. Actually you don't think or feel my emotions either.
So I don't give a damn.

Lol.

Not that I never cared if you give a damn or not, nor was I speaking for you. I just don't fine what was so funny about what Griffith said, but whatever. Not like I was making a big deal over your post or anything... >_>

So what's everybody going to do if the sound is the same or similar? I for one didn't notice the issues with the sound until everyone in these forums started so diligently addressing it. Now I notice but, it doesn't seem to effect my driving experience as much as the over all enjoyment of the playback.

You don't say...

Yes I do sarcastically say... as the sounds are so crap that anything would be an improvement.

More than a decade later and Kaz still doesn't get it - maybe he is tone deaf.

What I find strange is that sound wasn't the priority for GT6.
If you have a fundamental problem, you would think that it would be the first thing on your 'to do list'.
No amount of extra features can mask the gigantic elephant in the room...

Thats because sound is not the gigantic elephants in the room.

Look at this poll and you will see that in the eyes of the fans there are several equaly sized elephants and two even bigger ones in the room.

Seeing as how, according to that poll at least, more people want sound improvement than want more cars, tracks or improved physics, in a car driving game, I'd say sound does qualify as one of the big elephants in the room.

Not being funny but that's a poll of 140 people on the biggest fan forum for GT. It's hardly a true indication of what the majority want.

True, but that is always the case isn't it?

WHAT!? Sounds over more cars and tracks, as well physics??? Than mind as well have one car, one track and whatever physics whether its real or not, and the sound "the best thing one can experience"....

Ugh that game will be so boring. :indiff:

Yeah, that's exactly what he meant. Not.

That's a little melodramatic. I didn't say no one wanted tracks, cars or physics, just that the number for sound was higher, indicating that while people want more stuff to drive and more places to drive them, sounds are a really high priority for a lot of people, at least those on GTP.

Don't worry I understand. It was just my imagination of how a game like that will be like. Nothing serious. :)

I did not notice how bad the sounds were until I came to this forum. Why? I was young when I played GT5 for the first time, and had never really heard what these cars sounded like at high revs.

Coming to this forum I finally heard what some of these cars sound like, and I just can't get over how bad GT sounds. It has gotten to the point that the game is near unplayable.

If GT6 doesn't at least have improved sounds then I don't know what to do. Sure physics and graphics and cars are nice, they're the main parts of a Sim, but so are sounds. Sounds provide the immersion just as much as physics and graphics do. It's the golden triangle of a sim.

Well said. If one does not know how certain performance cars sound one won't know any better - now imagine how it has been for those of us that drive weekend toys like this for fun... this is what an LS7 powered Corvette with heads/cam/open exhaust sounds like - nothing like what modded C5/C6's sound like in GT5 (or GT4 for that matter)

Imagine how terrible it is for the ones that have been waiting for an improvement for the past 10 years.
