Wasn't sure exactly where to put this since the Computers and Technology section isn't frequented as often as this place, so I put it here.

What does everyone think about this? I think they're awesome! Can't wait to see technology like this start making it's way to the public.

After weeks of speculation and rumors, Google has officially pulled back the curtain on what they have come to call Project Glass — a pair of augmented reality glasses that seek to provide users real-time information right in front of their eyes...

I can't imagine the price of those glasses once it hits the market :scared: But I bet I'll be the first one wearing those glasses in my school if it's released before 2013, which is very unlikely :(

So like one of these?

I bet that was the prototype :P

...And watch as the generations get more and more dumbed down...

I'll have to agree with you here. For me personally, the way we access our social network, media, navigation, etc. is already simple and convenient at its finest. Though it could be useful for disabled individuals.

They are awesome but it would be cool if you could do more on them like get news, sports scores or quick info about something on Google.

If I can get these with a prescription in them I will buy them. I think they're awesome and I could see a huge benefit for them. They'd be really helpful in the work place and having a built in GPS like that would be a huge help too. It would be like having a mobile phone but I wouldn't have to stare at the screen to do everything meaning I would actually pay more attention to my surroundings.

I know Google can figure this out, I just hope it's soon. I wouldn't be surprised if they were on the market around this time next year.

They should be really handy for the army. Wireless connection with the weapons gyroscope. That would give perfect aiming!

I'd imagine the entire software would be installed on glasses frames and distribute it to all major glassware stores like FourEyes. People who are interested to buy it will provide it as a private purchase including the prescriptions of the lenses attached onto the frames. If the person does not want a prescription, then the company can provide it as sunglasses or similar. The frames could also have customization options.

Can't wait for these!

What I can wait for is all the bullcrap the tin foil hat people are going to start spewing out about privacy and "1984" and all their other ignorant crap.

Pretty much Omnis' picture.

I've just spent all morning reading up about this project. How cool it would be for it to become reality.

The thing is, the tech is probably already available for a smart hacker/ modder to be able to construct a similar piece of kit in prototype stage, it just requires some out-of-the-box thinking and the right know-how.

I'm quite excited about this concept! I've been dreaming about things like this for a while, and now they could be real. I wonder how much they'll cost though...?

The Telegraph.co.uk claimed a similar project by an American company could be retailing their product at around $300 in the near future. I'll take two.

By allowing people to have easier access to more information? Right...

You realize people on average know more today than they use to because it is so easy to look up information? Not sure if you can fully appreciate that even 15 years ago, you'd have to use an encyclopedia to look up even basic information on most anything.

The largest dumbing down invention is still television in my opinion, and even that has been shown to encourage mental growth in children by exposing them to a broad array of things. But for an adult, it is non-user aware ads and media, where as Internet based services are far more intelligent about what is presented with far more user control.

As for this project, the idea has been tossed around for the past decade semi-seriously. The primary issues were interface constraints, both for input and output. The biggest issue with output, from what I recall, was properly making the display focus while not excessively straining the eye.

Not everyone will use it for information. Take a look at the internet, it's got tons of info on it, but most of the time, people fruitlessly spend their time on Facebook and other social networking websites.

And this is worse than spending it in front of a television watching whatever is presented to them for that time slot?

Social networking sites still present new information to people, as news stories are shared often on these sites. Further, and for anecdotal example, my Google+ has been used extensively to help me expand my network of photographers and to receive feedback on my photo work.

Just because what you see is time wasted on social sites doesn't mean that is all they used for. And also consider (assuming I recall correctly) that you are young and your peers are less considered with the "real" world so to speak so what you will see more is a reflection of your current peer group.

It would be neat if they made something like that with a camera in it. Then you could walk around viewing the world like Terminator.

I don't think it's physically possible though. They'd have to make the world's smallest objective.

You can bet this technology has been developed to a degree in the military & by the time something like Project Glass comes to the public, the military will have something well beyond it in the works.

On the topic, this is awesome. I'm guessing I'll be well into my 30's by the time this actually comes to fruition & I imagine it will cost a pretty penny. I also wouldn't be surprised if Apple tried to get themselves something similar in the future.

Toronado
At least with GTP, you actually get to engage your brain (with some forums anyway) in discussion. As Azuremen pointed out, I don't see this on FB and stuff only because of the age group me and my peers are in.

Hopefully they'll have a built in scouter so I can read people's power levels.

Would be cool if they could disguise it better, like in the frame of a pair of sunglasses. Would be kinda lame wearing it like that everywhere.

We're moving into the future here, people!

Hopefully it doesn't give you brain cancer and eye rabies.
