Just watched the Google video and it looks interesting although could be a bit dangerous with stuff popping up in front of your eyes. Expect it to be added to the driving/cycling ban list.

Also, if something does pop on the screen, how do you select icons on the screen? It is voice activated or something?

With a simple button interface on the side, or a similar, wired remote like for headsets/cellphone headphones.

In that case it just went down a notch in my book. Having to touch the glasses is clumsy, having a wired (or non-wired) remote is a ball ache as it's something else that requires batteries and has to be carried around. Google need to step it up and go for direct brain control.

Digital Telekinesis :sly:

There is also technology which tracks brain waves to control items on screen. I'm sure it's no where near reliable enough yet but this is the kind of technology that will complete the product.

Yeah it would be cool to combine the two, but the voice activation like you said isn't all that bad either.

Voice recognition is still pretty bad in most applications that I have seen and would be too complicated for this type of product. Plus voice control would be really annoying when using this in public.

Not any more so than hand free blue tooth devices. We'll have to see what they do.

I would wear them. I'd prefer a black frame though.

These could replace my cell phone completely. Could be great for stock trades on the go.

Er...

On that thought if I had one of these I would use it to go on :gtplanet: . But the thing is, what do we use to type with?

What I really hope is that they will someday make the ability to customize your HUD for use. Why? Well, here's why.

I would look very stupid talking to myself. But I guess a bluetooth handheld keyboard would work better in my honest opinion.

That's your problem right there, actually caring about "looking stupid" to other people who really don't matter at all.

I bought one of these for $35 in 2010, absolutely love it.

On topic, I don't think these will be that useful for browsing forums, but I do think there are a million other potential uses.

So...not yet designed for those of us with spectacles?

While I think it's really neat stuff, calling it "augmented reality" is sort of like saying reality needed more information to make things "better". Advertisers have now another way to get their message out, yay for them.

I'd take one. I wear glasses everyday anyway, it's pretty much part of my identity. Not sure I could find a use for it all the time, but as a flip down device it would be very handy.

...And watch as the generations get more and more dumbed down...
There's quite a skill to finding information on the internet, something that I don't believe is taught well in schools. It is rather subjective, but even knowing how to phrase a search term can increase your productivity for research tasks throughout your life.

The point of that post is Penguin was complaining people will just waste time on social sites, while he was effectively wasting time posting on GTP.

There is a prototype designed be used with glasses from what I've read.

Kind of cool but I wouldn't want to wear one all the time.

From what I read, it will be voice controlled. Some other reports even hint at it reading eye movement.

Depends. If your friends on Facebook only write about how "there's too much homework" and how depressed they are because their high-school relationship didn't work out, then it's a waste of time. At least for me, on GTPlanet, you will get to engage in discussions that require thinking.

You've read topics on this forum right? The high school thread is full of a bunch of woe is me teenagers and complain about too much homework.

And just for the record you have made that same complaint:

Teachers in secondary school (high school) don't seem to be very cooperative in terms of deciding who will give homework during time x and who will give homework during time y. No teacher that I've ever come across has ever said that they'll be cancelling homework that day because there is a more important test that we have to study for.

They don't seem to realize that we've got homework from other classes as well.

Will people use these glasses for Facebooking and whatnot? Sure, it's no different than a smart phone or a computer. I can't tell you how many people buy MacBooks to sit around in Facebook instead of buying a Mac to run OSX only programs. It doesn't bother me though because it creates a demand for a technology, meaning it will advance faster and have it's cost lowered.

You're missing my point. For the record, I don't go on Facebook to talk about how my life is bad. My point being that on most social networking websites (for me anyway), there is no intelligent discussion going on, just mindless talking.

Sounds like you need to get some more intelligent friends on Facebook. I've had some excellent intellectual discussions on FB.

Much of the discussion on this forum isn't much different, as pointed out. The most popular section is the GT5 section, so not much else I need to say.

Just because your extremely limited peer group reflects a waste of time doesn't mean everyone will waste time.

As additional food for thought, you are also more aware when people choose to waste time via Facebook because of the nature of social networks. Which means the "waste of time" you see is that most often, versus how often people might just stay in and watch tele, play video games, or sniff glue etc.

Not to mention the irony of mentioning how people will waste time and be dumber while you post and discuss people wasting time on social networks via a forum. Where you are wasting time talking about people wasting time and being dumb.
