Gran Turismo 4 Modding Discussion

Not 100% sure if it's caused by Spec II mod, but it does mention adjust aspect ratio of some menu icons so it could be:

Because both it and the HD HUD mod both try to adjust the aspect ratio, some icons end up being squished from sides

Technically caused by Spec II since I corrected the aspect ratio of the actual elements, but not something for me to fix as it's now fixed at the source. If the HD pack authors decide to make a Spec II-aware version then this would be fixed, otherwise I recommend playing without for now.

So far, very awesome.

Some things I did notice though:

1. I have not tested all models of the car, but the S2000 Type V 2003 (top down convertible mode) does not have the interior camera centered on the steering wheel. Instead it is zoomed in on the dash.

2. Of all the RB26DETT Nissan Skylines, the BCNR33 GT-R seems to have the most accurate stock (no exhaust) engine sound, while the BNR32 and BNR34 Skyline GT-R's sound a bit odd. Could the stock engine sound from the R33 be added to the other two Skylines?
However though, when a custom exhaust is installed it (only tried the R32 so far with one) sounds, well, amazing.

3. 480p does not stay enabled after a reboot.

1. Some interior cams probably aren't perfect and I'll try to keep track of some to update in future

2. I gave each gen a different sound to avoid duplication - one thing I hate is when you get a grid full of the same sound and it blends together in one loud, phase-y mess - and going off the idea that different shaped cars will have different acoustic characteristics. I might look into improving them in future but I want to avoid just giving them all the same one, especially for the Red R Emblem races

3. I've tested this one just now and it works fine. Make sure you're letting the game save after applying it (it can't save in the options menu, only in GT Mode or when you hit Save Game on the main menu) as I've seen that catch a few people out

Not sure if it's a valid suggestion but an FIA GT / Le Mans Series type championship would be cool for the non-JGTC GT racing cars, though I don't know if there's enough cars in that category to encourage it.

Absolutely lovin' it. You Gran Turismo Modders are gaming heroes to me.

Also, uhhh... I noticed a drop in framerate due to the game seemingly being locked in 480p and also I seem to not be able to remove 16:9 no matter the option.

Saying this because my Laptop gets slow FPS when I play GT4 with 16:9 and 480p.

Edit: Resetting the game seems to have fixed the screen aspect and lowered back to normal pixels.

Masterwork!

1. Okay, nice. Thank you.

2. I understand. Maybe engine manufacturer swaps in the future could be possible?

3. I did indeed save it. Though my save setting is set to restricted, so perhaps that could be the cause.

I've been playing for a while and it's absolutely fantastic so far! Thank you for your amazing work. I would like to report some minor issues and suggestions in case you want to update the mod in the future. Don't know if it's possible to fix them or if you want to invest time in it, just consider this as a feedback. NOTE: I tested Spec II on PC, so some issues may be not related to the game itself, although the NTSC-U version of vanilla GT4-O doesn't have such problems.

  • Camera will always start in bumper position if bonnet and interior camera are disabled;
  • Can't look back with roof camera if bonnet and interior camera are disabled;
  • Asphalt texture glitches can be observed at Laguna Seca (I'm not using custom textures).
  • Some billboard sponsors at Sonoma Raceway appear to be glitchy;
  • Hyundai Tiburon GT '01 and Tuscani CCS '03 have minor wipers textures glitch);
  • On PCSX2 If blending accuracy is set to High some vehicles (Pontiac Sunfire GXP, Renault 5 Turbo Maxi Rally Car and maybe others) will display shaky on garage and dealership and framerate will drop esponentially even on high-end PC. Setting blending accuracy to medium or lower seems to solve the problem.

  • Bentley Speed 8 should be in new car dealership;
  • Subaru Impreza 22B Rally Car should be in classic car dealership;
  • Buick Special should be in Tuner village or Buick tune shop;
  • HPA Golf R32 is cheaper than stock VW Golf R32 (should be around 80-100K Cr.);
  • Is possible to list every car by era in arcade mode? Only 371 cars are listed there.

For issues, the first two are known and the former is likely fixable, the latter less likely. The rest of the issues are either the original game or PCSX2, so nothing the mod can change about those.

For the suggestions I’ll definitely take them on board and consider for a future update.

I have noticed some issues as well.

1. On some cars (I play on hardware, not pcsx2) there is interlace jittering. Going to Nissan>Classics you will see this on certain cars' description/information like some old Skylines or Fairladys.

2. Although I really do not have much interest in it, when trying to access the Nike dealership, a message appears that tells of trying to connect to an EyeToy camera. I do have one, but never use it. Though this issue could be related to playing from USB with OPL.

I honestly had no idea GT4 Online even supported the camera.

I don’t think jittering is caused by the mod or fixable by the mod to be honest, just the nature of that old rendering method.

Eyetoy issue is known - originally you could unlock the Nike car by scanning a specific t-shirt - but I think it’ll be so unused nowadays that nobody will mind me cutting it and making it a normal dealership.

Have pushed out another update, v1.02, which can be found at the website here: https://www.theadmiester.co.uk/specii/

Changes:
  • Mod version number is now displayed on the main menu and Mod Credits screens
  • Temporarily disabled the Display Rankings menu + simplified background image in pre-licence menus due to a potential crash
  • Fixed a crash that can occur if the player manages to click the Manufacturer Wheels button when it is disabled
  • Renault Megane and Mitsubishi Mirage events now correctly award a prize car (simply complete these events again if already completed)
  • Added Renault Megane 2.0 IDE Coupe '00 as an opponent to Renault Megane cup
  • Toyota MR-2 variants and the Spoon S2000 are now eligible for Spider & Roadster
  • Spoon cars are now recognised as Hondas for applying Manufacturer Wheels
  • Toyota RSC Rally Raid Car '02 now receives Dirt/Snow tires as standard as with other rally cars
  • Fixed various added cars only having their first colour show up in-race
  • Fixed Base Price/Sell Price incorrect text in garage
  • Removed Eyetoy check from the Nike dealership
  • Corrected Mazda MX-5 (NC) '05 wheel size
  • Tune Shop hint tooltip for Acura now shows up over USA instead of Japan
  • Improved engine sounds for Toyota CELICA GT-R (ST183, 4WS) '91 and Mitsubishi MIRAGE CYBORG ZR '97
  • Fixed various typos/inconsistencies in engine names
  • Fixed an issue where Full Restoration appeared to be applied when installing any other part in that category
  • Lowered licence requirements for some Extreme events
  • Fixed some inconsistencies in car descriptions
  • Adjusted the price of the HPA Motorsports Stage II R32 '04
  • Added Manufacturer Wheels selections for Dodge and Mazda in GT Auto

Two versions are provided, a small update/patch for people running v1.01, and a full build to patch clean from your original GT4 Online disc. No new saves needed.

Hi Admiester, I found a couple bugs and and what I think might be an oversight, but just before that, I should mention that I'm on v1.01 right now, but after reading the v1.02 patch notes, I would guess they still persist.

Bug 1: When you're looking at your car in the garage, if you're holding zoom (either way) then back out, it doesn't save the default position, so when you go back to the car, it's either closer of further than previously

Bug 2: If you have ASM/TCS set to 'Always Off', it only applies to tuning 'Set A' but not the others tuning sets, so you'd have to manually turn them off again on the other sets.

The possible Oversight: Euro Hot Hatch League Championship doesn't reward a car. I just completed it now, gave me bit of money for the race, then the championship, then just dumped me back at the menu with no price car, I just double checked the garage and yeah, it actually doesn't award a car.

I've made a note of 1 and the oversight to fix as they should be fairly simple.

2 will be because the settings menu hasn't been reverse engineered yet, so there's no way for it to run the override checks on that menu. If you switch to one of the other sets then refresh the car in some way (e.g. changing menus or changing car) it should work.

Just a recommendation: Any thoughts of swapping the 'demo sample' intro screen with a custom Spec II Mod screen?

And speaking of the jittering, it only happens with me on the custom car information screen which as far as I know is not on any version of GT4 be default, right? It usually happens I think on ones that have a lot of text.

I also must admit I find it interesting that either the beta as-is or this mod, has the .ELF executable uncompressed as every GT game game I have noticed has an executable that only is a few hundred kilobytes. (Excluding the PS3 games)

The demo sample screen is something I've wanted to kill for a while now, but it's a bit more tricky than it seems. Jittering could just by a symptom of having a lot of text as you say - not a symptom of the mod itself but more noticeable thanks to descriptions.

ELF is uncompressed because a lot of Spec II's changes are actually changes to the game's own code as well as adhoc (scripting language) changes.

The AI in the JGTC500 seem to have forgotten how to corner, they act as if they think they have more downforce and carry way too much speed into corners, going off on almost every one, this doesn't happen to our b spec driver though.

Yeah this is known, I applied a fix to the GT300 event, and if it looks like all is working well there I'll apply the same one to GT500 in the next update.

@TheAdmiester

Is it possible to add:

1. Manufacturer engine swaps

2. Manufacturer paint colors (for example apply the R33 Skyline GT-R LM blue color to another Skyline or Nissan model

3. Drivetrain options like converting RWD or either FF to AWD
1. Not currently
2. Yes (if the car already has multiple colours it's more feasible)
3. Possibly AWD using VCD parts with certain values, not sure about others

Just to add to the amazing-ness of new sounds, new gameplay, new prizecars, etc.

Has there been any progress on 3D wheels for GT4? Would really finish off the updated visuals of the HD retextures.

In the base game when you press L2 it jumps to the garage icon, and R2 jumps to the country of your current car (or the other way around, not sure). With this mod R2 opens the quick menu. Is this an oversight or has the country shortcut been remapped to another button?

Also may I suggest a nice little QOL feature from GTS/7. If you're in a vertical menu and want to move faster, pressing left takes you up 5 and pressing right jumps down 5. Just makes scrolling quicker especially for UCDs.

I think using the VCD as an AWD conversion is a cool idea, I thought I'd show interest if that's something you want to consider for a potential Spec-II update. Last time I heard of something like that being a feature was with Silent's Retuned mod.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what's going on with the Retuned mod? I haven't heard anything on it since Slient released his long form video showcasing and detailing the mod. I hope he's still working on it because I was actually interested in it, I know Spec-II has been the centre of attention for GT4 modding, for good reason, but I also think the Retuned mod looked like a great experience on it's on merit, I think it's cool when people transform GT4 into different experiences, the game has a great foundation for it.

I haven't heard anything specific about the mod itself but I believe Silentwarrior (not to be confused with Silent who you might know from PCSX2/GT/GTA efforts) has been working on various tools and tweaks for GT, including the patch colour editor which I used to add some new colours to cars in my mod.

I would assume work is just going on quietly in the background but obviously can't speak for them.

@TheAdmiester

I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but using the restoration options for cars does not restore the full HP to the car. I've been porting over some GS codes I made for the Retail GT4 US version to the Spec II mod using pcsx2 and Cheat Engine. When I saw the restore option on the mod I was happy an option was added to restore the car back to mostly stock.

However, if this 32-bit address here 0x009C7DEC is set to 00000000 will give the car currently in slot 1 more HP. This seems to be some kind of engine wear value. And setting it to all zeroes will not reset the mileage either.

Don't know if it's been reported or if it's fixable but sorting by sell price in the garage, while showing sell price, sorts by base price.
I can't think of any case where sorting by base price isn't the same as sorting by sell price, they should scale the same way shouldn't they? I did it that way to avoid doing it in a more complicated or laggy way.

Permanent engine wear isn't something that the game can edit itself right now, it's on the list for a future update but not a high priority as it'll be a complex fix.
