There's a big budget Uncharted movie, an HBO series based on The Last of Us, God of War is massive, Horizon is off to a great start and they own the rights to Spider Man. GT is certainly still king of the racing game realm, but it's not even close when looking at the big picture.
At some point there were a movie on the workns based on GT Academy but get scrapped at the same time than the TLOU movie (that was refocused as a series) so, it still relevant

One got canned while the other got re-worked. You're right it's still relevant, but not for the reason you think...

In terms of overall franchise sales GT is still 1st for PS exclusives but in terms of the latest game in a franchise, Uncharted 4, Spider-Man and God of War have all almost certainly outsold GT Sport, going by confirmed sales for those Vs known player numbers for GT.

Most important part of the presentation, obviously will be... 😉😂

 Ahh a man with his priorities in order! That funky intro is...

The most heated in my recollection would have been the hours after the Standard cars and tracks were revealed for GT5.
There were times that week where you could only view the GTPlanet forum if you were a registered member because the site was getting so much traffic. It's the only reason I joined so effectively the poor moderators are still feeling the nasty effects of standard cars 12 years on 💩

What makes you think that GT isn't their biggest franchise? GT has been consistent since PS1, it's still selling a lot of copies, still popular maybe not so much with zoomers, Gran Turismo has a huge but silent fanbase . Yeah, I know those Netflix cinematic walking simulators are popular lately but doesn't change the fact that GT still one of the reason to own a PlayStation.
I found the grumpy old man. Damn those zoomers for wanting gameplay that isn't chasing rabbits or getting stomped online, amirite?

GT is probably the biggest franchise if you count from 1997, simply by virtue of having an almost 25 year lifespan and a relatively large number of games released. There's a lot of history and simply no way for newer games to catch up with those sales figures when they're at an 70+ million unit deficit from the word go.

GT is probably not the biggest franchise if you look at sales per release in recent years. God of War is massive. Uncharted and Zero Dawn are both probably bigger per modern release.

GT Sport sold ~10 million units last I checked. God of War 2018 has sold more than 19 million on PS4 and is a top seller on Steam. Uncharted 4 sold 15+ million. Zero Dawn sold 10 million plus whatever it sold on Steam. Gran Turismo is big and makes plenty of money for Sony, but it's not Sony's biggest franchise in 2022.

At the moment it seems like Sony is choosing to put it's most popular franchises on Steam/PC as they hit end of life, presumably to entice PC users into the Playstation ecosystem for the newer releases. GoW and HZD are on PC already, Legacy of Thieves will be out later in the year. No talk of when or if Gran Turismo Sport will make it to PC.

That doesn't dispute that fact that Gran Turismo is still is their biggest videogame franchise which is my original comment was about. I just post a very simple statement that GT is still is their biggest franchise which is a FACT btw, and ya fellas start throwing sales number of their recent games at me and asking citation for it? If you gonna bait me to this endless and pointless argument, I ain't gonna bite it.

What’s your definition of big though? Spider-Man sold over 3 million copies in its first week, and it has now sold well beyond 20 million.

The Gran Turismo 7 announcement trailer has reached 10 million views in over one and a half years, while the Spider-Man 2 reveal trailer has reached 21 million views in just four months. If Gran Turismo is bigger, I fail to see it.

Exactly by what metric are you going off of with this "fact"? The sales figures as well as view counts on videos these guys mention are the only solid data I'm seeing here in the points they are making while you make this comment with nothing to back that up. If you would've said "One of Sony's biggest franchises", you'd have a point. This statement of yours just feels like the classic case of stating your opinion as fact.

It's not a fact, and it very much does dispute that GT is Sony's biggest video game franchise. It very much depends on you defining "biggest franchise" as "franchise that has historically sold the most units" rather than "franchise which is currently the most popular" or "franchise which is likely to sell the most units on their next release".

I was pointing out that there's more than one way to interpret "biggest franchise", and that the one by which Gran Turismo is the biggest franchise is the one that is heavily weighted to the age of the franchise rather than the quality or the present popularity. The ones that Sony is most likely to be interested in are the ones that are more direct measures of potential future profits. The same with modern players, as the next game in a franchise is of direct interest.

You're not at all required to discuss this, but it's worth stating for the sake of anyone else who might otherwise be misled that your ranting is some sort of absolute truth. Gran Turismo is a popular franchise that sells very well, but in 2022 a new Gran Turismo game is not likely to be as popular as new games from Sony's other more popular franchises. To many, that's what being a "big franchise" means.

GT is not Sony's biggest franchise now, not even close.

Between GT5's delays, GT6 coming out on PS3 right when the PS4 came out, and Sport being an online-focused, light on content game, the GT franchise has been losing a lot of players to other racing franchises that have been on the rise and losing some spotlight within the PlayStation brand.

However Sport still sold very well and I think GT7 will surpass it's numbers, given that PD provides us a quality entry to the franchise that can call back older fans and new ones too.

Perhaps a better argument for plate customization can be made by these two images.

Notice the car model is the same. But the plates on GT Auto are different from the default plates. Although, this could also just mean the plates are part of a body-kit, and cannot be changed separately.
I agree it’s probably just the RM that’s changed the plate here. I think the ‘Other’ will likely be minimal mods available to only a few cars and will include things like plate removal, changing pop-up headlights etc.

Mario Kart is the biggest racing franchise in both lifetime sales and current sales. Followed by NFS with 150 million sales lifetime.

The solution is simple then: Gran Turismo 8 will feature special events in which the player has to escape police pursuits, led by Bowser, around the Nordschleife. Princess Peach becomes Princess Apricot and tells the player to not drive dangerously on public roads before the game's intro starts. Wacky hijinks ensue.

GT: Kart or Gran Kart? What would the name be?

GT doesn't need to find a solution. The franchise just isn't the biggest racing franchise. Not in lifetime sales, players or current relevancy.

"franchise that has historically sold the most units"
Uhhhh... That's what I'm referring to from the very beginning? Sure, I should have been more specific about it but as far as I know I didn't claim anything other than that. And I'm perfectly aware how successful those interactive walking simulators that try so hard to be movies these days.

What you said in the very beginning was "GT is still is their biggest franchise", which can easily be read in numerous ways.

Yes, you should have because it can be read in numerous ways.
And I'm perfectly aware how successful those interactive walking simulators that try so hard to be movies these days.
And attacking what you see as competition doesn't really help articulate your point either. Regardless of what you think of them, these titles are currently more successful, and if you work on a units per year average (which would correct for the duration each franchise has been around) then the picture changes, with the Spiderman franchise ahead considerably.

Yeah, Spider-Man, Horizon, God of War and The Last of Us (to name a few) are just walking simulators.

No. Death Stranding on the other hand, that’s a walking simulator, and it’s bloody great as well.
