Now that the hype of launch weekend is ebbing, some sober thoughts.
There are very few new cars that weren’t in GTS, especially new Super GT and Gr1/Gr3 stuff. I did really expect more by now.
Ditto for new tracks. A couple of oldies back (T Mtn and D Forest great, HS Ring meh) and an easy to model one, Daytona, just a big self-contained bowl.
Far, far fewer races than in previous games. Odd.
Yes, all these things almost certainly will be improved via updates, but there’s no denying it’s an underwhelming launch (less so for people who skipped GTS perhaps).
Yes, the weather, the nighttime effects, the physics and even the AI is GREATLY and very satisfyingly improved (except the AI cars still have a proclivity to coast where you don’t expect them to - along the top at Mt Panorama for example, what are they doing, slowing to admire the view?)
But it really feels like that’s all they’ve really been working on these past years.
I’d say the map is a nice retro touch for the anniversary release, but navigation between events is very unnecessarily confusing and over complicated. We should be able to jump straight from one FR 450 event, say, to another at the press of a button (‘try other races like this?) rather than have to search individual circuits across three time zones in order to find one. I feel like I’m in need of a notepad just to keep track of where races are. It shouldn’t be like this. Simple is best.
I know some of my old friends in Japan are not happy with the game so far. PD will be under pressure soon I think.
