Thing is, you can enjoy a hobby and still spend smartly. Hobbies don't have to be stereotypically mindless and emotional decision making, there are still ways to make the most of it while still having a smart financial mindset that isn't solely exclusive to food, rent and utilities.
I'd say this is a very good time to bring this topic up purely due to the absolute insanity of this year's inflation and it's pretty a good time for many to really reevaluate their priorities or at the very least weigh out different options for a number of things, one of which includes how they enjoy their hobby.
Like I said, speaking for myself, it wasn’t mindless spending. I love cars. Gran Turismo was a dream come true. I had a PS1 and games for that system, before GT came out. When GT3 was coming, I got a PS2(a few actually one Japanese, two USA) specifically for that. Same with PS4, but as we know, delays. I believe I wouldn’t have bought those systems, if Gran Turismo didn’t go beyond GT2.
I was at a stage where I was making good money and wasn’t impulse purchasing. Think I’ve mentioned the other systems(Dreamcast, Game Cube) I bought for various reasons.
Your second point, exactly. I was fine to wait for a PS5, maybe by next year. That’s if PS5s were still in short supply. By chance and it may seem like an impulse, I was prepared to place a deposit and be put on a waiting list. However, the PS5s were available. So, I bought one. My other hobbies aren’t going anywhere.
Financially, I’m in a good place, but I don’t spend like I used to. I‘m content with the things I have.
It‘s a bit different to buy something you want and then wish you didn’t, only after the fact of a weak product. However, if it was something a person wanted and have the means that, financially, leave them where they are, it’s probably not a problem for that person. Eventually, that person was going to buy it.
Tbf, I went into buying a PS4 just for that, but then games that release at a later date end up in my library.
You'd be stretched very thin, hair follicle thin to find someone with only one PS4 / PS5 title on their shelf lol
Yes. That’s why I mentioned it doesn’t really stand up as a sole reason to buy a next gen console today(with backwards compatible, as an example).
