The open world thing, more than anything, is something I think Gran Turismo would really benefit from, given that it has seemingly deliberately positioned itself into the “driving simulator” category, as opposed to a serious racing simulator.

Indeed, “The Real Driving Simulator” has been the series tagline since the beginning.

I got into the Shutoko Revival Project mod for the original Assetto Corsa briefly in summer this year, and I couldn’t help but think how cool something this would be in Gran Turismo. Like a drivable hub world based on the “GT City” menus of earlier games, where you can actually drive between all the dealerships, event halls, tuning shops and licence centres in a pretend city, perhaps with it also acting as an online lobby where you can interact with random players doing impromptu races and such. They could even put little touge and dirt courses on the outskirts of the city.

I would also like some open world section in GT to give the game some variety, but I’m skeptical that would do that, as in Asseto Corsa it will be achieved with procedural generation, and I don’t think that the result would meet PD‘s very high quality standards.

A few weeks ago I decided to give Sport a little spin, mainly just to compare the physics models. It was when GT7’s physics update was new and I was struggling to get to grips with at first. Sport’s single player content is actually pretty good. It doesn’t have as much stuff as GT7’s event directory, but what is in there, to me, is a bit better quality (like the drivetrain challenges not having the ridiculous nationality restrictions) and has better variety.
I think having some variety in an event would be what I want for GT events, though I prefer the power variant (like GT2 having different License and hp limit requirements) rather than country requirements, like I'd rather have certain events like drivetrain challenges not just be limited to some starter events, but also a competition for higher end cars as well.

But ofc there's gotta be more base events as well to be made variations of. And I prefer if they're listed in one event.
It’s also a bit ironic when some say there weren’t enough road cars in GT Sport Yes there are. It’s that we couldn’t tune them as much as we could in the past games.
PD even gave us vehicles in all guises: road car, Gr.4(GT4) and Gr.3(GT3) and even off-road and Gr.3 road versions.
Mustang, WRX and NSX could be had in all flavors. The “GT-R” could even be had in an LM and so to speak VGT spec. ;)
Those are mostly later updates due to the complaints about it not adhering to typical GT experience eh?
In GT8 that may expand beyond the current Gr.1-Gr.4 set-up to take account of newer race cars and older models that look out of place.
GT has always needed to sort the car types (not performance) better, like how in GT5, the limitations for Super GT events was Japan Country, which means foreign Super GT cars like Nomad Diablo can't enter. There should be more added for the car type:

Exactly! GT has had maps in its menu design in GT1, 2, 3, 4 & 7. It would be so cool to have "Gran Turismo City" as a drivable hub world, with an airport being where you go to visit different circuits for race events and such.

A potential downside would be doing that making what is effectively menu navigation a slower process, but I'd personally prefer it.
The map could be relatively small and compact compared to games that use their open world for all of the gameplay (Forza Horizon, The Crew, NFS, TDU etc.)
Or maybe the current menu navigation method could still be accessed by pausing, acting like a fast-travel. That way the open world element becomes optional, but still there for people wanting that experience.

I'd use it as a quicker way to just jump in a car from my garage and drive it for fun casually, rather than having to load into a Paddock or time trial session at an actual circuit.

-I have a Ferrari 500 Mondial Pininfarina Coupe, wherein I’ve only bought it Sport Soft tires, but lately, it’s been almost un-drivable. It wobbles way too much, y’know?
This is a known issue from around the physics change from the Eiger Nordwand update.

No way for the above.

Even the map menu itself will get complaints for being difficult to navigate due to diagonal stuff, dunno if making the menu icons/buildings a square grid will solve those problems. The shortcut menu from GT1/GT2 must be back though.

Otherwise yes, I wanted the map menu back to be used for open world with it as the map, but open world must be optional (seems one of the complaints for open world games in general is slower navigation). And typically open world games also have map access during driving. The main menu/fast travel is always the default, but there are options for free roaming.

I mean yeah, I would be absolutely into it, something like this map could be very, a small batch of Tokio for example. If they put their resources just into this for the next title by handcrafting it and wouldn’t be any other new tracks on launch, just the ones we have right now in GT7, I would’ve ok with that.
The question would be how would that look like? Would there be pedestrians, traffic, fuel stations, challenges and events?
It’s just hard for me to imagine that PD would do something like this, but there’s always a first time for everyone.

It's time for everyone's favourite type of post: A research post! (crickets)

I've looked at every real life race car that PD have added in GT7 (both base game and DLC additions, if it wasn't in Sport it's fair game). What's incredibly clear is that PD definitely have a focus when they add these. If a car didn't win a championship, win an important race, or is incredibly historically significant in real life, they probably aren't adding it - they definitely aren't filling out grids with backmarker cars for the sake of completing the grid of a year.

Alfa 155 won 1993 DTM
Audi RS5 won 2019 DTM
Honda NSX GT500 won 2000 JGTC
McLaren MP4/4 won 1988 F1
Mercedes W196 won 1955 F1
Nissan GT-R GT500 won 1999 JGTC
Peugeot 205 Group B won 1986 WRC
Subaru BRZ GT300 won 2021 GT300
Super Formulas won Super Formula (I admit this is a tautology)
Toyota GR010 won WEC a bunch
Toyota Supra GT500 won 1997 Super GT

Audi R8 LMS Evo won many GT3 races
Ford GT GTE won 24 Hours of Daytona
Honda RA272 won Japan's first F1 race
Mercedes AMG GT3 Evo won many GT3 races
Mercedes W194 won 1952 Le Mans
Porsche 917K won 1970 24 Hours of Daytona
Porsche Carrera GTS won Targa Florio and won class in Le Mans
Suzuki Escudo won Pikes Peak
VW ID.R set a bunch of records including Pikes Peak and Nordschleife

First of all, we separate out the '50s Maserati and the '18 GT-R GT3 - these got in via Pebble Beach and the movie respectively, they were guaranteed entry.

Of the rest:

Alpine A220
Longtail McLaren F1
Chaparral 2J - historically significant for development of the fan car
Nissan Skyline Super Silhouette - is the iconic car for its series despite not winning
Porsche Spyder
Subaru Impreza Rally Car
Toyota Celica Rally Car - historically significant for turbo controversy
Toyota GT-One - massively significant in Japanese race car history

So there's only 4 that aren't champions or obviously important cars for other reasons. And I know some of you will say the longtail and Impreza are above that "notoriety" line too. Either way, there's clearly a direction behind what race cars they are adding.

I feel like the BMW Mclaren F1 GTR is purely there as part of what I tend to refer to as the "BMW Motorsport Starter pack". Notice that many racing games that aren't officially licensed has some combination of the following cars:

  • BMW M3 GTR (2001)
  • BMW M3 GT2 (2010-2011)
  • Mclaren F1 GTR (BMW Motorsport 1997)
  • BMW V12 LMR

If you particularly notice with multiple games from the early 2000s to the late 2010s (Alongside the THEN new BMW M6 GT3), there almost always was a trio that featured one of the 2 M3 GTs alongside the F1 GTR Longtail and the V12 LMR.

Speaking of which, is the M3 (E92) GT a typo in GTS/GT7 when it's actually meant to be the M3 GT2, or was it really called just the M3 GT despite being used specifically in GT2 racing?

It was what it was referred to when it competed at the 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hour in what was then called SP9-X class (I think?).

Here were also my likeliest guesses for the content of the next update.

-I don't foresee the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N being featured in any other event than the WTC 600, so I bet there'll be a new round of that. In fact, it seems like there are a mere seven rounds of this event, with two at different layouts of Tokyo Expressway. The only other guess I had was a new Clubman Cup Plus event, but I don't think that event has the little pre-race dialogues.

-I had wondered why there wasn't an even for the F1500T-A, but now that we're getting the F3500-A, I would be highly surprised if we don't get a new Bonus Menu featuring the latter at various GP venues like Brands Hatch, Fuji, and/or Spa-Francorchamps.

-I'm entirely unsure of what other car(s) could be coming alongside those two, but I wonder if they'll have any influence on what sort of Extra Menu(s) we get? That said, I think it's been a while since we last got an Extra Menu that also featured a car that we got in the same update. Personally, I'm still holding out on potential Extra Menus featuring various designers or design houses, like Giorgetto Giugiaro, Frank Stephenson, or Pininfarina.

-At least one new mission set would be highly-appreciated as well, if only because the currently-final drag race mission implies there are more like it to come. I also imagine this is where we could see more endurance races, though there's still the one hour race of WTC 800 race at Spa-Francorchamps that's within World Circuits, plus at least two half-hour races, at Road Atlanta and Le Mans.

-Speaking of that half-hour race at Road Atlanta, I wonder if they'll ever retcon the Gr.1 Prototype Series ruleset to actually being limited to Gr.1 cars? We've seen something like this before, too, with the most notable example that I can recall being how the GT-R Cup didn't initially permit the first two GT-R models.

-Naturally, at least one new quintet of engine swaps will be coming, but I don't see the Ioniq 5 N nor F3500-A being involved in them. Plus with some cars getting a second swap option, who knows what swaps could become possible? (Here's hoping some engines that only have a single option, like the ones from the Corvette C6 ZR1 and Aventador SV, will get more!)

-No doubt we'll get more scapes, too, but where could they end up being this time? I'd especially love to see Mystic, CT. Or maybe the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance, haha!

The F1 GTR I think was added to give the CLK-LM a rival so to speak, as the F1 GTR and CLK LM/GTR rivalry is legendary similar to the C5-R and GTS/R rivalry. Even though it didn't win it was the class winner for GT1 in Le Mans 1997, though the one that won was the Gulf Davidoff livered one. The BMW one was probably added due to being the most known of the Longtail GTRs + it was previously introduced in GT4. I can't really say it was easier to scan since both 95R and the regular F1 are at McLarens HQ which leads me to believe the reason they added the BMW one was pretty clear. Though I really wish they added the Longtail HDK as a second bumper and tail option as it looks pretty rad.
