'Gran Turismo' is coming to the BIG screen!

Rod Carvalho
...or a zombie movie, where the all earthlings became a zombie Jeff Gordon and keep talking "Remember, the car is heavy".

And the world is saved by Jenkins the Cat driving a Red Bull X2014 GTR (Powered by Nissan) Ltd. Edition.

The only storyline I can see directly based on the game would be a GTAcademy story.
Otherwise they could do a story following a drivers personal life, like 'Le Mans' or 'Grand Prix', revolving around their career starting in the Sunday cup and ending with a le mans win?

Nothing wrong with being sarcastic, but I think we've had enough with other whining - esque threads on GT5 and GT6 forums :) Let's make a good use of this thread, maybe collecting story ideas, who knows we can send our collective rough story sketch to Kaz, when Jordan have the chance to interview him next time :D Slim chance, but we have nothing to lose, right ?

Okay, serious story idea here:

My idea for a 'GT' movie series, not really based on Gran Turismo, would have taken inspiration from Steve McQueen's Le Mans. Imagine if there had been a few other films that continued the story of the drivers' rivalry during a race series?

Basically, one film chronicles the events surrounding one race event. Drivers arrive at a course like Spa, for example. For more of a story experience, we see the drivers doing some activities outside of the race. They go to restaurants, meet with fans, etc. Maybe a different film would open with a single driver working in tire development for a manufacturer, or even as a test driver for a carmaker. The purpose is to just have something different before getting into the race, which is the center piece of the film.

Then comes qualifying, and the drivers get warmed up. Some of them have rivalries, friendly and not-so-friendly, with each other. Of course drivers are characters, but there can be crew chiefs & pit members, the series commentators and others. Think of an ensemble cast, where the drivers are all very talented and unique people, and different viewers could like a certain driver/team/car over another.

Then there's the actual race, using lots of authentic footage to show what actually goes on. Add some drama to the race, but nothing over-the-top. Real drama comes in the form of something as simple as a tire puncture, fuel strategy or body damage that requires a pit stop. There are ways to work with something realistic like that, instead of a CGI crash fest best left to an 8yr old's imagination.

As for the actual racing itself, I think I would personally like to see it be based on something like WEC's GTE class. Using cars that look more like road cars and with more varied appearances would help keep the audience interested. That's not to say that prototypes & amateur cars wouldn't appear at all, but that the driver characters would be competing in GTE. Besides, traffic can be another challenging element for the drivers. 👍

If this happens, i.e they turn the "dry" simulator/nerdfest we all love into a stupid Hollywood flick, I do expect Kazunori Yamauchi to commit sepukku in absolute shame. After slicing some necks at Sony...

Agreed, This can only be bad news, they will want the game & movie to "tie in' to make maximum profit.

Now we know the real reason why Kaz suggested an open world GT game not long back.
Thinking of how to earn more money to go play race cars with Lucas at the expense of GT and its true fans! :-(

Regardless of what happens, Gran Turismo will get even more brand exposure and considering that millions of people already love it, this is a good thing.

No its not!

People aren't going to go watch a film about a real life simulator.
They want explosions, drama, rivalry, FX etc

I think I've seen that one before:

"I love the Power Glove, it's so baaaaaad!" :sly:

Not if the brand exposure is bad.

Well, that might have some more weight to it if GT had a small fan base.

Realistically speaking, I expect plenty of cars and plugs of Gran Turismo 6 in this movie wrapped around some plot device to appeal to the masses.

It's a smart move in my opinion.

Since this is a movie, not a game. Will there be Porsches in it? Forza can't tell them what to drive in a MOVIE.

So even if, worst case scenario, the film gets panned as another poor game-movie tie in it's still good for the name, even if it's dragged through the dirt?

Considering this is by the producers of The Social Network, another based off a true story movie, then maybe this will be a movie similar to that? A story about Kaz and PD and their influence on the motoring world. It could be a great way to show car culture as well.

The problem with that is that there isn't any interesting drama involved with it. Social Network worked as a story for a film because the guy kept getting backstabbed by his partners.

It would be cool for a doc, not for something like this.

Exactly. Conflict is one of the essential elements of a story.

People keep saying that but from a Hollywood point of view Kaz's life is pretty dull. That's not a slight on the man but in your comparison to the Social Network there is no power struggle, there is nothing like that in his life. Just a man growing up with a love of cars, making a video game and later going racing. It would take a lot of creative work from Hollywood to turn that into an interesting movie.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by Wardez.

Very true... Perhaps a fiction movie based around the Nurburgring 24 Hour race? There certainly is a lot of human drama in a racing team during these races. Sense GT is a huge sponsor of the race it would make a little sense.

I would much prefer something grounded in reality and not over the top or super cliche. Something like a rookie driver going against huge odds, losing everything but coming back in the end is so overdone, just interchange driver with something else and you have the plot of many movies. I would hate to see a GT movie turn out to be another one of those.

A Gran Turismo movie...

I heard Uwe Boll has interests in directing it...

🤬 help me, NO!

And yeah, the "rookie loses all but still beats all" plot is way overdone, isn't it? I'd prefer..."veteran who's a great driver despite his age believes himself to be past his prime and attempts to retire, but his friends and family convince him to compete in one more championship to prove that he's still the man, and eventually make a comeback in the auto racing scene".

A diehard GT fan, who happens to have his own wheel and chair setup gets approached by a brunette bombshell while racing [autocross/chumpcar/his dad's classic corvette] at a local racetrack. Unbeknownst to him, she works for the mob and he gets roped into being their wheelman 'when needed' in exchange for a shot to become a real race car driver.

A blend of someone who is just like us, gamers and gearheads, who like the GT:A gets a shot at racing for a career. But with a little action, suspense and a way for the guy to be a real racer, and get the girl. That is what I would make the movie about, seems like a no-brainer to me.

I'd prefer a top gear type themed movie.

Put the academy winners up against each other in a bunch of challenges.

Have them build a car for a race?

I just don't know what it could be? GTR meets Z, falls in love and has a bunch of Leaf's? Plural?

That actually sounds plausible.
Very F&F.
