Local SCCA club got some invite that you can sign up for a screening today and so I went. It was...ok...
I think Jann's story itself is dramatic enough, especially to all of us who has played GT, seen the GT Academy process, maybe even knew some people from it. But of course they need to dramatize it, to make it Hollywood. The racing actions where it was shot practical, were pretty cool. Stand in LMP3 cars and GT3 cars are cool and sounds great. Weird that they had to use Hungaroring to stand in for many places(all?) A lot of the wide shots are CG but sometimes they just put a skin over Hungaroring so if you know Le Mans and that you know they are not at the same place....
Manufactured drama, cut and paste "villains" were silly, as was the glazed brake bits and how he knew that from playing GT. But playing all those to layman I think it makes for a more entertaining movie, and I think I would enjoy the movie more not knowing all of that(also 3:14 in a LMP2 car at Le Mans? lol).
But tbh, better than what I expected in terms of making "Gran Turismo" into a movie. I think they had the right idea, and Jann's story is remarkable. Also David Harbour is actually pretty fun to watch in his over the top way. And Orlando Bloom, if he was a stand in for Darren Cox, I think does the schtick pretty well.
