Machine learning is computationally heavy on the learning process, not the use of the model.
I think this is the thing that the layman needs to take away from this; training the model is the computationally heavy process, not the application of it. For those familiar with DLSS on Nvidias GPUs, it's basically the same thing really, but a totally different application. DLSS has learned how to upscale an image by training on huge datasets of for example 1920x1080 images, comparing them to 8K or higher resolution images, and by doing that over and over millions of times it builds a neural network (often referred to as a model) that can then be used to upscale say 1080p to 2160p. In realtime.

I've only dipped my toes into ML, but it's very interesting work. Though I think you may have to think of it not as some kind of general purpose all-encompassing artificial intelligence (regardless of the AI moniker), but as a trained model that is good at one thing.

I'm sure there are people here (@Samcastor for example) more in to this than I am, and I sure have a lot to learn, but damn this is interesting stuff!

Also, so ironic reading comments from people that have berated GT's old "AI" (which IS bad) and now claiming that the new AI will be too good

I will have the chance to speak with Kazunori Yamauchi and the Sony AI team about Gran Turismo Sophy in the coming days — let me know if you guys have any specific questions about Sophy that you'd like answered. 👍
Forgot this :

Do you have plans to make the AI be able to adapt to the new weather system present in GT7 ? Same question regarding tyre wear, fuel load, strategies. Will the AI, at some point, be able to adapt through the race to account for these variables ?

Can Sophy get stressed out if you drive too close to her and will she make mistakes because of this? For example you are closely following her for quite some time.
Will Sophy get tired and make mistakes during a long race or in a battle for places?
Will Sophy be effected by sun glare during sunrise or sunset?

-Can Sophy be utilized by the player setting a qualifying lap, and having the AI difficulty match it's times for the race? Matching ballpark lap times to challenge the players difficulty level? Or an end license test to place your career difficulty.

-Will Sophy's technology help develop the next iteration of B Spec?

-Can this new tech help with the complexity of the penalty system?

-What human elements are associated with Sophy, or can be implemented?

This is probably tree'd but they're named after different types of wine, similar to how GT's placeholder names in trailers are also named after wine.
I wonder if this naming scheme has anything to do with the phrase "aged like fine wine" since the AI just gets better and better the longer it learns.

Fascinating stuff, and I really like the 3-wheel turn-braking it does.

Edit: ah...
They're just colours in French, not wine as we saw before.

This new sophie A.I. felt like it just came out of nowhere for me. Polyphony and Sony all along behind closed doors was creating a new A.I. system that learns and drives as well as some of the best GT Sport players in the world. What a day, I wish it would be coming to GT7 at launch. hehe

Though to be fair, this has been sort of on course for Polyphony lately in some cases. Their car sounds got major improvements in GT Sport, we went from not having a proper livery editor to having one of the best ones out there by GT Sport and especailly now in GT7, and from having a lacking customization system in GT to quite a remarkable one in GT7.

They have been working with Sony AI for years and have released two previous papers on their experimention. This is in some ways the culmination of that but in other ways just the beginning as they add more layers of nuance and integrate it into the game.

The racing was seriously impressive but the AI's qualifying laps looked like they had the old Gran Turismo skid recovery force helping them out. Kinda defied belief.

It's good to see how far they've come with it, though.

See, this is the problem with you and your posts. This is a lofty but categorically wrong statement.

It's literally impossible for PD to have worked with Sony AI "for years" for one extremely simple reason. Sony AI hasn't even existed for two years yet.

Let’s not forget the weather system is back and better looking! I would say the squad at PD have been putting in work. 😉

Now PD about damage… 🤔

They published their first study in August 2020. You're correct. These years under covid have dragged brutally. It felt like longer.

And now you've quoted an article I've written back at me... ludicrous.

It's going to need something like that, my view is that It's simple in theory, most likely difficult in practice.

Certainly the ML based racing AI's we have as comparison have not yet pulled it off successfully, and one of those has a serious amount of AI experience behind it.
Coding seems to have parallels with editing DNA, lots of cascading consequences for making small alterations, If this comes to fruition it will be some achievement. Glad I dont have to figure it out, just simply enjoy / whinge about the results lol

Can Sophy beat Lewis Hamilton?

Can we watch this time?
Of course using the special Masi code! feeb shoulda multi quoted

Is there the possibility to customise opponents driving style in 'championships career mode'?
For exemple: I'm a casual player, my driving level is 5 (considering levels from 1 to 10). The career is set to AI difficuty 5. It would be fun if AI controlled drivers had different driving skills: the driver 'A' AI could be characterized as 'best braking pilot', and his 'braking skill' could be set at 7, not at 5 as the other drivers. The driver 'B' could be characterized as 'best line driver' and parameters linked with lines choice could be set on 6, not 5. The driver 'C' could be characterized as 'great wet driver'... Each championship could have a certain number of 'special drivers'. Maybe the player could be informed about the other driver's points of power and weakness before the race, or box could remind the player about 'other drivers skills' by radio during the race.

Proofs in the pudding, sounds great, but if it still feels "cheaty" in places and doesn't follow the same laws of physics as the rest of us humans when compared to wet weather, general cornering physics, speed power and momentum as well as tyre wear and self awareness it will all be for nought.

Ya ask them how the **** are we suppose to race against AI that smokes the Top players in the world? They're going from trash AI to Skynet AI. All we asked for was AI that doesn't brake mid corner lol

@Jordan you could ask if Sophy will be scaleable in it's ability in GT7 (once it's implemented of course) so it won't just continue to learn and get better and better until you can't beat it, but players will be able to experience a difficulty commensurate with their own. And if it will be implemented throughout GT7's single player modes or if it will feature solely in a special mode/event.

Might just be me, but programming an A.I to beat humans doesn’t seem very advanced for me. You can always program an A.I to run a perfect lap and do it consistently. I’m surprised it took this long. We have automatic transmission that can outshift human manual nowadays, and we even have chess A.I in the 90s beating top world class players.

What would really impress me is if this A.I can beat top GTSport players on a one on one race physically, not a ghost race.

Very obviously they won't expect us to race against this version of it. It will be scaled back somehow when integrated into the game. They could easily limit it to keeping further within the curbs for example or force it to be slower on the gas out of corners.
