I'm unable to watch the video quite yet but I can say that it is in Sony's interest, in the realm of gaming, to research AI. They have up to ten live service games releasing by 2026 and it would really benefit them all. So we know they're investing a ton into multiplayer, anyway.

But you guys make it sound like a big nothing in this video so maybe that's what it is.
I wouldn't say "a big nothing" as there is enough in it to pique interest (obviously), but certainly nothing really anyone could draw any conclusions from.

Some are assuming it has to do with an announcement regarding the AI logic / mechanics in GT7. .....maybe it is or maybe it has nothing to do with that at all. Perhaps it's another project loosely tied to GT7 or encompasses this title along with several others. ......we simply don't know.

The good news is that we don't have long to wait. Only until Wednesday.

Posted in the AI thread, it's probably for the Sony Vision EV. It'll be like Black Mirror. Upload your drivatar do you can play GT7 while you drive you.

Not necesary, if this is special thing, you want that get all the atention.
If you see the news, this was cover like the SOP of GT7 and not about Testarrosa being a new car for the saga for exemple.

Also, you want more focus in your game, yo need to divide the information so the people can talk more about it trught the days.
Yeah, actually necessarily. If it was for a game that is extremely close to release, that has more or less had some issues with the lack of a good Ai, this is something you'd want to bring up. Also, even if they saved it for a stand alone announcement and actually is connected to the GT game coming out in less than a month, than it would have made more sense to include it as such.

If they wanted focus on their game, and with this supposedly some kind of breakthrough to some people, than it would make sense to give them something to talk about for said game. So far they are distancing themselves from stating anything at all about it being linked to any current game, especially one so close to release. It also seems like the start of the project, rather than something that has been extensively worked on throughout the development of GT7. If whatever happens here ends up working well and actually gets implemented, I'm all for it. However, I just don't see how people are trying to force some dots to connect.

regardless of whether they improve AI in GT7 or not, perhaps we can agree that this kind of promo vid does nothing but increase the anxiety of thousands of people desperate for their freetime hobby to be more fun. who honestly is excited or interested in this promotion? at least in 2 days they'll reveal all OF COURSE (lol)

Why wouldn't you be interested in Sony creating a gaming division within their AI department and teaming up with Gran Turismo to bring it to life? That sounds like a lot of fun to me.

The only one who seems to think that this will actually bear any fruit is you. And besides, Polyphony in general talk up a lot, and have in recent history not really delivered on their promises.

More then anything else, machine learning AI is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, when the issue of AI in GT games could be easily achieved by...hiring someone and creating something from scratch. Like a whole bunch of smaller scale games who run circles around GT's shambolic AI efforts.

1. From the official Twitter "On 2/9, our team is excited to launch our Gaming Flagship"

They used the word GAMING.

2. the logo at the end is red and blue,

Gran Turismo covers and logos have traditionally used red and blue colours.

3. Timing is ominous.

Perhaps building the hype train.

I'd love to say it is gt7 related... But as they say hope for the best... Prepare for the worst?

because from my perspective at least, hype trains and vague promotional videos do the opposite of what they intend, especially when they're massive companies like sony. let's both wait 2 days for the actual announcement, I mean at least it's 2 days right?

Shame it's the winter Olympics on now and not the summer, because that's some triple jumping to conclusions right there, gold medal worthy.

The reality is it's just some promo video project featuring Tom Brooks commentary and Sport Mode players, as pointed out by @KevinHeryanto

Again, Tom really can't be any clearer here. It's a project. He was part of it. He's a commentator. We're going to watch it. Pretty straightforward.

If the project was some big gameplay thing that was going to be a part of GT7 he wouldn't say it like that and a commentator would have nothing to do with better AI in gameplay.

Yes I agree. Will there be some blowback though? for embarking on an AI project then showcasing it for the world to see, only to release the game three weeks later with some turd Ai.

Probably not as reviewers probably won't be mainly "race guys" and won't mind the AI but will be blown away by the graphics hence this game gaining very good rating and the AI in GT never having any incentive to ever improve.

Alot of excitement from effectively next to nothing, as expected from the OP

turd AI you could be on to something here sir... lets runs with it...
What we need for flagrant rule breaking is an AI algorithm that can dish out the ultra low poop frequency haptics for repeat offenders... was that a rumble strip or fart?

Could just be a reference to the Vision. It's a good platform to introduce self driving cars, help people get used to the experience in game. AI was was mentioned by their Mobility division recently too.

The Japanese electronics giant previously showed off its prototype EV, the Vision-S autonomous car, at the annual CES tech event in 2020. It has now unveiled its latest prototype, the Vision-S 02, at CES 2022, with upgrades capitalising on Sony’s expertise in the entertainment and sensor space.

The new company, Sony Mobility, will be launched this spring and will explore the commercialisation of its SUV and sedan prototype cars, which are now being tested in the roads of Europe. With the new company, it aims to use AI and robotics to create “a world where everyone can live in harmony with robots on a daily basis”.

Speaking ahead of CES 2022, Sony chair and president Kenichiro Yoshida told a news conference that he sees mobility as an “entertainment space” where passengers could chose individual entertainment options.

“With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our contents mastery, we believe Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility,” he said.

I’m hopeful this will have to do with GT7. The timing is pretty coincidental.

We know that decent AI is possible on console (a la, project cars and ACC), but maybe it wasn’t achievable by PD standards when taking graphics, frame rates, etc….. for the PS4.

Enter the PS5…..

I’m not privy to all the nerd stuff that taxes the horsepower of processors and such. But maybe PD has been waiting for hardware stout enough to be able to fulfill their needs. And they’ve decided with past titles that they weren’t willing to sacrifice graphics and the like, for an AI that probably 90% of the Gran Turismo target audience is happy with (cause let’s face it… the small minority of “hardcore” GT players will make their way to here, or Reddit…and post concerns in our comfy little echo chambers).

Then again, this could simply be beta testing for the inevitable PS5 pro that’s already built and ready for release 3 years from now. Then Gran Turismo will be able to have the online clout of Iracing or GTS, the physics of ACC or AMS, and the graphics of AMS

My hot take at least

Commenting on our favorite GT racers like Cookiemonster, Fraga and Tidgney etc racing against AI.. 🤠

The AI is IMHO the "missing link" that if PD got right would enable GT to become a legit option for serious sim racers out there.

Not to mention the fact that the "hurtful" jabs aimed at GT fans since time immemorial would theoretically cease or at least have no foundation.

Oh what a wonderful world it would be for GT fans once again. :gtpflag:

EDIT:
I forgot - we need more "road detail" to come through our wheels too. Been hoping for this for a long time...

Why do people still think that Polyphony's AI has been limited by hardware when there's clear evidence that it would slow down to let you win in GT6? The AI in Gran Turismo is exactly as fast as Polyphony want it to be. There's no reason to believe that the AI has been hampered by lack of hardware power, and every reason to believe that the AI performs exactly how the designers want it to perform.

Unless their design principles have changed, you're going to get the same in GT7. That they have apparently changed their design principles enough to allow multiple levels of difficulty in the career mode is encouraging, but their perception of what constitutes a reasonable range of difficulties in the past suggests that the practical difference may be a bit limited.

... and therein lies the mystery and possible cause for optimism based on Kaz's recent comments about its behaving more like humans and his wanting it to be faster IMHO mate.
