I’m hopeful this will have to do with GT7. The timing is pretty coincidental.
Not really, this is exactly how marketing tie-in's work.
We know that decent AI is possible on console (a la, project cars and ACC), but maybe it wasn’t achievable by PD standards when taking graphics, frame rates, etc….. for the PS4.

Enter the PS5…..

I’m not privy to all the nerd stuff that taxes the horsepower of processors and such. But maybe PD has been waiting for hardware stout enough to be able to fulfill their needs. And they’ve decided with past titles that they weren’t willing to sacrifice graphics and the like, for an AI that probably 90% of the Gran Turismo target audience is happy with (cause let’s face it… the small minority of “hardcore” GT players will make their way to here, or Reddit…and post concerns in our comfy little echo chambers).

Then again, this could simply be beta testing for the inevitable PS5 pro that’s already built and ready for release 3 years from now. Then Gran Turismo will be able to have the online clout of Iracing or GTS, the physics of ACC or AMS, and the graphics of AMS

My hot take at least
Or the most likely one, based on the info we have right now, that it's a marketing tie-in.
The AI is IMHO the "missing link" that if PD got right would enable GT to become a legit option for serious sim racers out there.

Not to mention the fact that the "hurtful" jabs aimed at GT fans since time immemorial would theoretically cease or at least have no foundation.

Oh what a wonderful world it would be for GT fans once again. :gtpflag:

EDIT:
I forgot - we need more "road detail" to come through our wheels too. Been hoping for this for a long time...
AI and 'road detail' are not the only legitimate issues people have with GT as a series in terms of simulation accuracy, but this isn't the thread for that.
Interesting little video which tells me about exactly nothing .....
This

I can see it as research for the next GT,usong the full power of the PS5 for GT8 with this new AI,or maybe it will come as an update for gt7 in the future.

Or it's B Spec Bob RISING FROM THE GRAVE

On Gran Turismo's Facebook page this announcement is tagged under GT Sport. It says "Gran Turismo is playing Gran Turismo Sport" in the page name bar above the post itself. So this might not even have anything to do with GT7 at all.

I just realized the penalty system is based on AI as well I guess, really hoping the penalty system will be good this time around! More so than good AI NPC drivers.

It is not easy to find out what is going on, I hope, but I think all people hope, that AI is going to change by increasing time and aggreession like almost all other racing games, should be not hard to do it for them. AI and online Penalty System are the two things that absolutely need to improve.

I'm not expecting anything big, as in, this relating to GT7. However, with that said, the timing is intriguing, just after the State of Play and with GT7 looming on the horizon. So, just for the hell of it, I'm gonna allow myself to keep just a glimpse of hope, as unlikely it is.

Regarding Tom Brooks being part of this project, I'm assuming there will be a race between the Top World Tour drivers against AI, and Tom will commentate? That's not too far fetched.

Anyway, we will learn the truth soon enough. Did I miss it, or has there no time been announced? As in, at which time this will be premiered, and where?

Tomorrow is the announcement according to push square site, its intriguing all been used as part of the big launch news cycle... Got some of us in speculation mode, at least its not long to wait for something less ambiguous than that short vid...

EVERYTHING CONFIRMED! <3
Genuinely nothing confirmed. Nothing we didn't already know, a collaboration between 2 companies that probably has nothing to do with what 80% of people here are getting excited over it being.

The only tie to the game I can imagine is the traces of light through each scene, is the variable routes tied to machine learning circuits.

Let's be fair to the drivatar system, it's a dam sight better than Gran Turismo's AI. I'd have the drivatars over the robotic slow things of GT.
The one thing the drivatar shows, is that even with MS money, machine learning AI takes a long time to get good.

I 100% agree that I'd take it over GTs current AI.

It could be an effort to give us a sentient "Kit" GT's very own Alexa/Masi hybrid, it could be used to sarcastically admonish the cheap drivers... "Stop brake checking Michael"

Let's see if this time the AI will be at least competitive. There are several devs that have managed to make it at least that good. Assetto Corsa to me is better than mediocre in most tracks. That level would be good for GT7 me thinks and they can patch it up later on when they get even better at that.

Machine learning is not going to do anything for racing game AI in the near future, just as it hasn't done a great deal so far (even as far back as Colin McRae Rally 2). It's really a problem of defining the ideal solution, so you can't teach something to behave in a way you can't quantify.

As the AI research they've published so far in relation to using GT Sport has been image based, i.e. a essentially a video feed of what the player would see, the outcomes aren't directly useable in a game AI. That's both because taught neural nets can't be translated in that way and because you can't render a visual stream for every AI, even simplified. And really it's a pointless exercise for a game when you have much more information on hand than just that which is rendered to the screen to help provide non cheating shortcuts, to reduce computation costs.

I don't think it will be useful for a self driving car either because the context is so limited and not representative of what a real self driving car will come across. Although we all wish we had superhuman overtaking ability on our daily commute.

My guess is this is for a new type of driving assist. Other research has focused on mixed control of a vehicle, i.e. a combination of self driving and human input at the same time, in a way that doesn't cause instability or distracting intervention (unless necessary). It also makes sense given the visual basis of the machine learning too, so it could use the player's viewpoint to control the car

Something something accessibility and cross-marketing as well. No doubt there'll be a race between GT greats and the AI too for fun, but the AI will probably win in the end...

Sony filed a patent last year for AI to take over controls when it detects a player has put the controller down even without pausing. Which would be helpful in GT when wheels unplug, monitors turn off or the dog knocks something over. A pretty small thing but could make a big difference in that situation.

Have you played some codemasters games. ? The ai is LETHAL.

Also motorstorm., Occasionally the ai would barge you into objects when it was an easy opertunity for them to do so.

Maybe I just not very good. Or perhaps both are True

Codemasters AI have improved significantly in the last couple years. They can be a bit overzealous, especially in F1 2021 (but then again.. so can humans, and their aggressiveness normally sees them take the damage instead of you) - but considering they're AI and aren't operating on the same physics as the player, they offer really good close racing, most of the time leaving you unharmed.
