You don't think, just maybe, you're experiencing minorities, minorities that have existed since time began? To claim this is what the whole of human nature is like is today like you did is indeed a gross exaggeration. Unless you have something more conclusive than a few protesters or audio snobs on a couple of forums.
So what about the millions of other products currently going around in the retail world?.. or the semi-proffessional and high-end domains? Everything is a boarderline niche market/product arguably. Let's not get started on the Automotive industry.. so many options and price ponts to choose from, and it's worked out for decades. Here we have a Playstation model at a mere $200 difference. Unlikely to flop, it's just that kids, or those having a hard time getting over the long-standing console lifecycle, are going to have to get used to it. Playstation could drop the $1000+ model tomorrow and some will buy it. A gigantic portion of the world's businesses are making non life essential products, called toys or cool items making life a little easier and fun.
