I agree with the physics. They're far better than both GRID games to date. They also fit in nicely with the game. I never thought drifting would be so much fun in a game.. and neither type of race leans too heavily on arcade.

The only thing that irked me about this game is the overall sound design. Otherwise, it is good fun.
What's wrong with the sound design?

What's wrong with the sound design?

First, the things they did well with the sound:

* Tire screech effects; simply brilliant, can't say enough good things.. enough said!
* The way the environment comes alive in this game.. the crowd cheering, the copters hovering overhead and other stuff I can't really think of in particular, well done..however, and that's coming up shortly..
* Engines sound good as you're picking up speed. Upshift/downshift sounds are reasonably convincing. Gives a good sense of immersion.

Things that could have been done far better:

* As your closing in on the red in your tacho, and as you ease off the throttle.. where does the engine sound go? I don't want to set the dynamic range to low just to hear the engine better, because then the game gets really loud and sound quality gets somewhat muddy. I.e. you downshift and suddenly you hear that sweet, soul-pleasing bark and that's it.. after that.. it seems you're sailing somewhere out in the ocean.
* Wind noise; this needs to be more pronounced especially on heavier cars with less efficient aerodynamics; as you pick up speed, wind noise should partially drown out engine noise.
* Turbo sounds... where are they? You barely hear them.

I can point out a lot more that isn't right, which I found surprising at first since the same devs made Dirt 3, and Forza also set such a high benchmark.

Though I don't feel like complaining much. I managed to enjoy the game for a few weeks. I'm sure Codies are hard at work developing a current gen GRID game.

For 20 bucks it's a bargain if you look at how much racing fun this game gives you in return.
Yeah. I honestly never thought that the game would last me as long it has (although I haven't played for some time now). Over 300 races in career mode and still nowhere near finished. My trophy collection percentage is sitting at 19% and have plenty of stuff to do still. I've easily wasted at least 100 hours playing G:AS.

Thanks mate making the buy today.btw I'm going to be playing on a g27 and tips?

Physics are good, you can predict what the car will do and when you screw it up you know it was your own fault as you went to wildly into that corner. Also the physics when you drive over curbs, uneven surfaces or hit the gravel are excellent. Blurred cockpits are barely noticable when you use the closest view. For 20 bucks it's a bargain if you look at how much. racing fun this game gives you in return.

If you use cockpit view pick the closest one of the 2, and put the dynamic range on low at the sound options for louder sounds. For the rest enjoy and be sure to add me on psn and compete in the racenet challenges ;)

I've jumped in public playlists recently and there seems to be less punters now. Most people I race with are fast & clean 👍 You need to be on at specific times though otherwise it's a ghost town

I haven't bought the game yet. How is offline play? I want to drive touring cars only. Is that possible to do from the start of the game? Do I have to pass tests or pass up the ranks in all disciplines before driving touring cars? I saw a GAS video someone put up after unwrapping the game, but not sure if it was arcade Mode.

Does the game generate the series races or are the events set permanently like in GT6?

Offline is the best of about anything out now barring a few hardcore pc sims. You can select the race type as you please from the start, you can even skip some entirely if you want, but you won't be able to do the master series unless you level up each type. The events are set in regular career mode, you do start with slower, less powerful cars and work your way up the ladder. You can set practice time, qualifying or not and laps to some extent in this mode though.
In custom cup, available from the start you can set pretty much anything and everything to your liking. Car types, tracks, laps, qualifying or random, practice time, like I said, pretty much everything.

Yeah there are five total groups of racing in the base game (Touring, Endurance, Open Wheel, Tuner (time attack and drifting with custom street cars), and Street (pack racing on street circuits)) and you can drive whatever you want whenever you like.

As @MustangManiac mentioned the Masters Series are separate tournaments consisting of all race types.

Does anyone play this on PC? Just picked this up during the holiday sale on steam for 7 bucks and got the drag racing dlc also for a grand total of 12 dollars. If so are there stricly drag lobbies or however the online portion works. Haven't ventured online yet.

Purchased PS3 version some days ago but didn't had time to try it.
Finally this morning had my first run and I'm quite impressed with the CONSISTENCY of this racing game, a true racing game with stuff that make sense put together, finally.

Seems like some people at Codemasters came here in Gtplanet expecially in the GT5 epic rage thread and took notes about what we Gtp'ers have said during the years: brilliant career mode, realistic damages, improved FFB in (comparison with Grid 1 & 2), pilot that sign for racing teams, practice & qualy, custom Championships, team radio, team mate strategies, default interior FOV that make sense... I trade 1200 cars for THIS approach any day of the week. Much more enjoyable in my opinion.
Yes interiors are not perfect but hey 17,99 € on the PS Store. Worth every single penny and more. More because it gives you the magic feeling of being a racing driver, working hard in order to progress your career.

A big part in this feeling is given by AI, without a doubt the best AI on PS3 for motorsport racing games. Yes sometimes they hit you but HEY this is racing. Crash happens and people like Maldonado, Grosjean, Perez, Hamilton exist in real life. People with different amount of agressivity, speed and skills are part of motorsport. Don't give them opportunities, close the door without blocking, do not break early, be fast and cosistent.

Wait, sounds like we need to do what the best drivers do in order to achieve their good results! This AI is more than improved version of the already good but a bit too Maldonadoish Artificial Intelligence of Grid 1. Sometimes with Autosport I felt like I was racing online, minus the lag, the classic humanoid first corner chaos and the notice of "xy users have left the room". Which is truly great.
So for me, no more need of time wasting "you kick me out of the road!!!!!1!!","no you break too early your fault!!1!!1" debriefing after the race.

A downside? Grid Autosport will probably ruin my plans of making music. I guess I'll end up racing instead of playing keyboard! :)

^^ 👍

For a first attempt, GA is a rather well executed racing game. It's nicely balanced and the career is reasonably satisfying.

Can't wait to see what these guys unveil with GAS 2...

And yeah: "Rubbin' is racing" !

You can start in touring cars, but not all of them are available in the career mode from the outset. You start out in the equivalent of BTCC cars, then step up to V8 utes and Euro V8s, and finally V8 Supercars and Stock Car Brasil. There are also classic touring cars available as DLC. Each class of car tends to race on its own set of circuits - the BTCC race at Brands and Istanbul (among others), while Euro V8 and V8 Utes go to Hockenheim and the Red Bull Ring.

You can stick to touring cars if you like, but you're limiting yourself because there are some great cars in the other disciplines (except Tuner). Endurance gets GT3, SuperGT and LMP2; Open-Wheel gets Formula 3, A1GP and IndyCar, and Street gets a whole range from hot hatches like a Mini Cooper through to the Bugatti Veyron in the hypercar class.

 BTCC, V8 Utes :D Me thinks I'll be picking it up tomorrow 👍 The other disciplines are cool as well. Plenty of options.

Any links to GAS Car & Track lists? I only saw the DLC/Car & Track wishlist thread.

Internet Game Car Database is a place to stop by @05XR8 http://igcd.net/game.php?id=1000010839&width=1366

Blue star cars are DLC.

That car list is just plain silly. I'll take those cars over GT6's car list. Kaz needs to hand CM the keys. I'd love to see how Codemasters would handle PDs archive of tracks and cars. C'mon, the E30s, Atoms, Gr.A R32 and 12C GT3, let alone the Utes and V8SCs. Look at the Cuda AAR with the Trans Am livery!!! Fine, GT6 has the FXX, ONE-77, But it's Codemasters. They build racing games. Im looking forward to this.

I've actually got the game running right now, so here are the circuits:

Brands Hatch, Istanbul, Spa, Hockenheim, Yas Marina, Sepang, Mount Panorama, Algarve, COTA, Mont-Tremblant, Red Bull Ring, Indianapolis and Jarama. There are also fictional circuits - the Autosport Speedway and Okutama - and city-based circuits in Barcelona, Chicago, Paris, Washington DC, Dubai and San Francisco. There are also several drift circuits. All circuits have multiple configurations.

As for the cars:

TOURING - (BTCC) Chevrolet Cruze, BMW 320i, Ford Focus, Honda Civic; (EuroV8) Mercedes C63 AMG, Audi RS5; (Stock Car Brasil) Peugeot 408, ADC Presteza-14 (fictional); (V8s) Falcon and Commodore utes and sedans.

ENDURANCE - (GT3) Mercedes SLS AMG, McLaren MP4-12C, Audi R8 LMS, Aston Martin Zagato; (SuperGT) Honda HSV, Nissan GT-R; (LMP-2) Lola B12/80.

OPEN-WHEEL - (Formula 3) Dallara F312; (A1GP) Lola B05/52; (IndyCar) Dallara DW12.

STREET - (Hot Hatch) Ford Focus, VW Golf R, Mini John Cooper Works; (Coupe) BMW 1 Series M, Subaru BRZ, Honda Integra; (Performance) BMW M3, Mercedes C63 AMG, Audi RS5; (GT) Mercedes SL65 AMG Black, Jaguar XKR-S, Alfa Romeo 8C, Aston Martin Vanquish; (Supercar) SRT Viper GTS, Aston Martin One-77, McLaren 12C, Pagani Huayra, Mazda Furai, Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Black; (Hypercar) Bugatti Veyron, Koenigsegg Agera R, Pagani Zonda Revolucion, McLaren P1.

TUNER - (Muscle) Chevrolet Camaro SS, Ford Mustang Boss 302, Dodge Challenger SRT8; (JDM) Mazda RX-7 Type RZ, Honda S2000, Nissan Silvia Spec-R Aero; (Super Modified) Honda 5zigen Civic, Mazda Panspeed RX-7, Subaru Tomei Cusco Impreza WRX. This category also contains several cars tuned fir drifting.

Each discipline also has multiple one-make championships, which I have not included because you only race them occasionally in career mode.

*shakes head while looking at GT6 on tv screen* That's a good variety. Short and to the point. Current circuits. The AI is good(from the posts above).

You know what GT6 offline is like? It's like opening the refrigerator when you know what's in there. You go back, after a short while, to expect something different in there. But it's the same stuff you saw 5 minutes ago.

The only real downside is that you unlock teams, not cars. Your performance in a series will attract the attention of other teams, and the car choices are set based on the team. For example, say you do the first Category-C Touring (BTCC) event. Your first offers will be from Oakley, who use the Cruze, and Razer, who compete with the Focus. After four races (two in Istanbul and two at Sepang), you will get an offer based on your performance and whether or not you met your targets. You may have your heart set on the 320i touring car, but you could just as easily get an offer from Monster, who also race the Cruze, or Liqui Moly, who enter the Focus, rather than Cusco, who use the 320i.

So there's no real control over which cars you use, but the game is still fantastic fun. Stick the difficulty on hard and dial the race distance up to 3x or 5x, and getting 13th place (in a field of sixteen) feels like an achievement.

Also, you have no control over who your team-mates are. For the most part, they're just a name and a flag. They don't have personalities, but some are considerably better than others. For example, I got an offer from Monster Energy Racing for a top-tier Endurance series. Monster have two drivers, Aadi Rao and Louis Jacobs. Rao is good; he was regularly running sixth. Jacobs, on the other hand, is hopeless; he would run thirteenth or fourteenth. Naturally, I want Rao as my team-mate, but I get Jacobs, and there is no way to change. It's not a problem in the top teams, because all of the drivers are good; nor is it a problem the backmarkers have, because all of the drivers are horrible. But the mid-level teams typically have one decent and one mediocre driver, and more often than not, you'll end up replacing the decent driver.

It is. There's nine championships in each of the five disciplines, with each one getting progressively longer. In order to finish everything, you're looking at ninety championships (you'll see what I mean), plus the multi-discipline events. And then there's the extra DLC championships; there's about a dozen of them.

Yes it could be a downside, but somehow a realistic one.
Since when you swap team in real life you will use the car they'll give you.

I'm always for livery editor, custom liveries and templates though.
But the way Career mode is shaped somehow reduce my needs of painting the car.

That's exactly why I didn't purchased GT6. If I do I know I'll end up ranting on a GT6 rage thread because career mode sucks and AI sucks even more. Somehow I realized life is too short to do that all over again! :)

The car list is pretty good, no doubt. I'm just disappointed that they never perform like their real world counterparts. For example, in Muscle class the heaviest Challenger is faster than the Mustang and Camaro. In GT class an SL65 is faster than a GT-R SpecV. Really CM :banghead:

The track list is pretty good too, though I would like to see La Sarthe back from Grid 1 and add Nurburgring (a must for any racing game these days). Codies original tracks (the Touges) are some of the best original designs I have ever driven as well 👍

Honestly, if CM made the physics a little more to the sim side GAS will be perfect.

In terms of the original circuits, I like Barcelona the most. They're extremely difficult since they're so fast and flowing, but they're great fun when you get it right. I also like Chicago, since they're nice and wide.

I'm not really a fan of Dubai. The circuits (except Gulf Approach) feel silly, like they have been ported straight over from an arcade game. And the San Francisco circuits are horrible - tight, narrow, point-and-squirt affairs coupled with hopeless AI.

San Fran GP is the greatest fictional circuit in any racing game*.

The bottom of the track feels just like any other street circuit but then you get to the hill.

*Well maybe after "Epilogue" from MotorStorm Apocalypse where the whole damn city is falling around your ears but that isn't a really a track... or a race
