At a little over four minutes in Mark Donohue mentions upgrades to chassis and engine AND TIRES being the best reason for sett.ing new records. Improvements in tires from the mid 60's to today is IMHO the REAL CHAMPION in 'ALL' the records in every form of automobile racing. Tires and clutch are the CHAMPIONS that take from 500 to as high as 12,000 horsepower and hook it to a racing surface. Cool video :-)
