According to Brian, who I hung out with after the event before we flew out on the red eye flight, the deadzone can be taken out and made linear. It just requires hooking it up to a PC and updating the firmware.

Why buy T500 now? They can just as easily change "the official wheel" for the next GTA.

Exactly. Plus it is not $200-300 better than a G27. While I do not condone it, if you were really, really desperate you could order it on Amazon and then return it in 29 days.

I think myself and racer x are the only two who actually liked the wheel. In my opinion it was very smooth. I would sell my csr in a heart beat if I could find a decent priced one second hand that was taken care of.

Mostly crazy though, right? RIGHT?!?!? lol Thanks man, can't wait to meet back up and go at it in the real rides. Definitely some intimidation running against STR runner up...not to mention we're all here for a reason. If there's one thing I learned this past weekend, it's no expectations. Just keep pushing 100% and what happens, happens.

I also agree about AJ, he should tear it up next year.

Also agree for a7x, I didn't even put together who he was until the 2nd day and didn't have to race him til Spa. Well, I wouldn't say I really raced him, myself and the other two guys just watched him leisurely drive off into the sunset :P.

Haha mostly crazy, and fast too :). Gonna be a pleasure battling with you my friend. All you can do is give it your best, that's all that I ever try to do.

I was inspired by Nick's post, so here's my write up on the events that unfolded this past weekend.....

Nice driving dude, you earned that Spa Victory-

No doubt, you were a superb guy to talk to. Definitely kept my head up cuz you knew what was up, I basically had the same experience as your brother with the brake pedal, just a different monster then what I'm using, thats why i'm going to get that wheel asap and be ready for it next year. Missed my 1 pt. to advance to round 2 by .006. Just wish I could of ran my heat 1 time in heat 2 and i may had advanced. Then I was pretty jealous with all the tracks that followed, I liked em all especially the last round at Spa.

You and your brother were definitely awesome and I know what Joey and others are dealing with. Looking forward to practicing the next year with you guys when you all get a chance. And anybodyelse for that matter. Gonna work on losing 30lbs and be ready for whatever they may throw at us next year, cuz I'll do what it takes to make it again.

Appreciate it dude,feeling is mutual.

Yeah man, really great insight Nick, you're so awesome!

Here's a little photoalbum I made btw.

Nah dude, you are awesome. Totally rose to the occasion with your back against the wall. Totally awesome. :)

Nice brain dump Nick, GL in England (you should have been there last year, I'm glad they did a 2nd one so you got a 2nd chance). 👍

I was wondering what they were going to do when I saw 1 wild card slot... dumping someone before the track racing stared was kind of mean. :/

Thanks dude, I'll be fighting for you a bunch of other specific guys.

Regarding the T500RS, the wheel and FFB system is extremely high quality, but I feel it needs more development and tuning to unlock it's true potential before it really becomes the wheel of choice for serious sim racers. I'll just say that, if they want to make it a proper wheel, they need to make the brake pedal work properly. Over .5" of dead zone is unacceptable, in my opinion, and you shouldn't have to go on a PC to tune it out. I am faster, and more consistent with my DFGT than I ever could hope to be with a "stock" T500 for that reason alone.

Anyway gents like I said in the "Who Will Win" Thread, I am signing off for 3-4 weeks perhaps just to focus on my training. Thanks again for an amazing experience.

I have the T500 RS and I don't have a dead zone in the brake pedals. I had problems with the paddles once and decided to buy a G27 on sale while I was waiting for replacement paddles. No comparison... after one session on the G27 it went back in the box and back to the store, felt like a toy to me. Basically, it just comes down to what you are used to using.

The deadzone in the brake pedal was probably one of the most significant things people had to adjust to quickly that didn't have that wheel. For the amount of brake used in my dfgt to trail brake, it was no brake at all on the T500 RS. I was managing but race factors didn't help my outcome. From what I saw the majority who had the wheel and had practice time with it moved on easier then the rest of the guys who had G27s or DFGTs. As soon as I get my new wheel my DFGT will be getting boxed up or used as target practice for the rest of the year.

So the T500 is a $500 wheel and the pedals are 2nd rate enough that they don't have a load cell? I thought it did ??? That's pretty unforgivable, the best wheel in the world will still stink if it doesn't have a good brake pedal. I expect a realistic load cell from the ultra high end. 👎

Or is that what you guys were having trouble adjusting to? The fact that a load cell requires force not movement?

I personally loved the wheel itself just the deadzone in brake pedal was weird it was like you had 35% brake or none at all, thats the best way i can explain it.

What a fun and anxiety filled event.

I happened to live 15 minutes from the hotel, so Thursday was a bit more relaxed for me than some of the other competitors.

Thurs night we all met up for a meet/greet event at the hotel where the rules and layout were explained to us. I got to meet several of the guys that first night. Jeff(rackattack), Patrick (sohnvonstig), Jett (jettracer), Joseph (veloci), Mike (kingsbest), Ron (Dragon), Joey (Joeyfast), Nick (forced), and of course got to see my good friend Eddie(Wardez). I really wanted to meet more people, but it was hard to keep track of who was who. Do you introduce yourself by name, screen name? And it was hard to keep track. It would have been helpful to have had name tags with our screen names and real names on them. I hope they do that for next year.

The event space was pretty cool. They had rented out one of the bigger bar setups in San Diego. There was a multi-level down stairs bar that we didn't really use for the event. Up stairs there was a very large room with a full bar, a grandstand, tables, coaches, a filming area, 2 human racing rigs with GT5 setups for spectators to try, the broadcast area for the live coverage, and the 8 T500 rig setups for the competition. Also upstairs there was a separate large room setup with 6 full size pool tables that was our "competitor's area." This is where they kept us when it wasn't our turn to be racing. It also had windows that overlooked the street and the Comic Con craziness. They brought us food and drink while we were in this room. There were also several couches in the room.

You would think hanging out in the "competitor's area" would have been really sweet.. But unfortunately someone had the bright idea to run a constant looped racing soundtrack. This wasn't a multi-car racing soundtrack. It was just one car (lmp2?), running through 5 or 6 gears.. then silence. 5 minutes later, same sequence. Then again, and again, and again, and again.... This continued, as far as I know, for the entire 16 hours of the event. It was also unusually hot and muggy for San Diego on Fri/Sat, and I don't think the bars air conditioning system was up to the task.

The event itself seemed to run quite smoothly. Rich(event coordinator) managed to organize travel and accommodation for 32 competitors. The representative for Nissan North America, Mike Disser, was absolutely one of the nicest guys I have ever met. While I was in the competitor's only area I had a couple of friends show up. I couldn't go say hi, but Mike took it upon himself to go welcome them, and even took them for a ride in a GT-R that must have been near by to the event.

The live broadcast added quite a bit of excitement to the event. I only experienced being in the televised group once(final races of the competition), but it was surreal hearing my name called out over the P.A. system, having the camera crew lights firing up next to me, and still having to concentrate to try and make it to Silverstone.

_ _ _ _ _ _

First round combo:
Tsukuba/Silvia

I was really stoked on this until I realized I was in the same group as Kyle (A7XMAverick). This is one of my fastest tracks, and I always do very well in races there... but I had raced Kyle 2 days before and he was faster. Race started, and it turned out Kyle had never used a T500 before. It took him a few laps to get a feel for the deadzone in the brake pedal. Lucky for me, because he was unstoppable the rest of the competition. I got away with 2 firsts and a 12 point start.

Second round combo:
Trial Mountain/Z34

I had practiced this combo before the event, but so had a lot of the others. I qualified 3rd, and got a good jump off the line. Unfortunately that put me side by side into the chicane, and I lost a lot of speed while leaving room. I was in 4th place when we got to the right hander leading up the hill. It took me a little while to get back to third. Once there I realized I was about 6 seconds back from the front 2. It took me a little while to get in my rhythm. I eventually caught the front 2, but it was with only 4 turns left and I couldn't find a way through. 3rd place. Second race, I got off to a safe start and was in 3rd when we got to the right hander leading up the hill. Unfortunately one of the front 2 spun right in front of me and I couldn't avoid him. I had to come to almost a complete stop and had to drop down to first gear. This gave the other 2 drivers at least a 5-6 second advantage. Thankfully they were battling each other, and I was able to catch up to them with two laps to go. They went side by side on the final corner that leads to the back straight. I got a perfect exit behind them, caught their draft, and managed to pass both by the end of the straight. Unfortunately, a few turns later, I was spun(contact?) and was stuck back in fourth place. Managed to gain back one spot on the final lap. 3rd,3rd.

Third Round Combo:
Tuned Z/Cape Ring (North?)

Wow. Felt like the car was on comfort hards. Felt like anytime I considered using the accelerator, I spun. Including the outlap, quali lap, and the two races, I spun 5 times. 4th, 4th. Thankfully my buddy Eddie managed to get some solid points in this heat.

Fourth Round Comb:
GT-R Black Edition DLC/Spa

I am really nervous at this point. After starting out with 12 points after round 1, I only had 14 points after the first 3 rounds. I was in 16th position overall. I thought I would need 19-20 points to advance. I was placed in the 5th and final group of the event. It was a loooong, and nervous wait.

In my group - Matt (topgear)26pts, Brian (TX_Driven)20pts, Darwin(Darweezee)14pts, myself(RedReevos)14pts. Brian and Matt were locks for Silverstone, and Darwin and I needed some points badly.

This is one of my favorite tracks, but wasn't a track I thought they would use. I listed 56 tracks I thought they could use, and at least went to each of them before the competition. Spa, I hadn't been on for 5+ months as I had been running on iRacing the previous several months before GT Academy started.

I qualified 3rd. 2nd, 3rd and 4th got in a battle for position fairly early. This allowed Matt to get away. Bad news for Darwin and I... I battled with Darwin and Brian for quite a few laps before I was able to get to second and build just barely a big enough gap to hold on for 2nd. Not a terrible start, but I felt I still needed more points. I felt bad for Darwin, as he raced so clean and so hard, but didn't get a big finish.

Race 2. I started in second, but 3rd place got to my inside by the first corner. I had to run wide and 3rd place got me as well. By the end of the first lap, Matt was in first, Darwin second, I was in third, Brian was in fourth. All of us still close together.

Brian was really good at the final chicane and had a little bit of a run on me going into the first corner of lap 2. I stayed to the inside to protect my position and wasn't close enough to Darwin to challenge for the corner. Darwin took the normal line from the outside into T1, unfortunately he braked a little sooner than I expected(not sure if I missed my marker, or he braked early) but I slammed my brakes immediately. I was carrying an extra 10-15 mph over Darwin as we got closer to the turn. At this point I didn't know what to do as I had slight overlap on him at this point and couldn't swerve out to miss him. Darwin turned in and I tagged him right in the passenger side door. Ughh.. I felt absolutely horrible. I had no rights to the corner, and had no intentions of challenging him there. I backed way off, Darwin resumed in 2nd place and Brian got by me as well. I was now in 4th. Matt got away during this contact between Darwin and I.

It took me the next lap to catch back up to third and fourth. I got really lucky going into Eu Rouge as Darwin and Brian had slight contact going up the hill, and I managed to get by both of them on the following straight. They left about a car and a half between them, and I don't think either saw me flying up. I was shooting the gap between them when I think one of them didn't realize I was there and we had slight contact.. Brian ended up slightly in the grass, but he held it well and I even think he kept his speed. I was able to hold on for 2nd place.

I must say the last two races, with all of the commentary, bright lights, a trip to Silverstone on the line, was very intense. Even with all of that, it was the best 2 races I have ever been a part of on GT5. I can't give enough compliments to the other 2 drivers I was battling with. I hope to get to run again with Darwin and Brian in future GT5 races. Total class acts. Thusly I felt absolutely horrible about my contact with Darwin. He only managed a 3rd and a 4th in these two races, and one point. He thought he was out of the competition, and I thought I played a part.

It was time for all of us to gather in the grandstand for the announcement of the final cut(from 20 players to the final 16). There were 3 people tied at 15 points and only 2 would go to Silverstone. I was stoked that Darwin still had a chance. Throughout the competition they would have the contestants that were to be eliminated, step forward. The judge said, "Darwin, please step forward." My heart sank. "You are in the top 16 and will be going to Silverstone." He was shocked, and I felt huge relief as stood up and clapped. Unfortunately, one competitor, by tie-breakers, was to be eliminated. That was Darren(TRC_Hunk). I know he took it hard. Any of us would have. He has been a true gentleman on these forums in support of all the rest of us in the top 16. I hope no one is denied their ability to make it to the finals, but if someone drops out, Darren is very deserving.

A few more interviews and pictures and the event ended. What an intense, anxious, exciting, wonderful couple of days.

I enjoyed each and every competitor at the event.

Eddie (Wardez) - Always great to see you.👍 Just wish I found more time to show you around San Diego.:ouch:

Patrick (sohnvonstig) - Seemed surreal to finally meet.. and at the GT Academy Nationals, the event we both followed so closely on the forums last year. Go John Deere racing!

Jett (Jettracer), Joseph (Veloci_2NR) - These guys are part of the same "team" as Patrick called "AltF4." They convinced and helped Patrick to come to the west coast for the racer X event. Amazing friends, and amazing guys!

Jeff (RackAttack) - Great to sit next to the #1 qualifier in the U.S. at the first night's dinner. Way to back it up with the #1 qualifying time at the event and winning the Human Racing rig. 👍

Mike (KingBestJr) - What a great sportsman. He was the unlucky one of us that was eliminated when we ran the random track qualifier to get down to 32 competitors. I never saw him complain or blame anyone. He stayed with us for the whole trip and was very supportive. Next year mate.

Ron (DragonGT83) - I raced with him several times before the event. Very clean and patient racer. I know the T500 threw him off a little bit, but I am sure he will be back in the Nationals next year showing just how good he is.

Matt (TopGear) - Unassuming and humble, yet showed he is one of the fastest sim racers when it counts. Congrats on your 38 pts for the competition! I hope you have a great pre-trip to England.

Kyle (A7XMaverick) - Great guy, although he and I weren't the best billiards players.:sly: He got off to a rough start with the first combo, but then showed us all what a stud he was and finished all the remaining races in first. Definitely someone to watch for at Silverstone.

Joey (JoeyFast) - What a solid dude. There was just a happy presence that followed him into the meet/greet on the first night. Just a big smile and a welcoming handshake when getting to meet him for the first time. He is another guy that had a hard time getting used to the rigs, but he will be back, and I will look forward to following his adventure next year.

Nick (Forcednduckshn) - Joey's twin brother. Like his brother, just a happy dude with nothing but positive things to say. Oh, and he killed it at Nationals, and he has a lot of experience in auto X. As many have properly predicted, he will be strong at Silverstone.

Darwin (Darweezee) - My fellow San Diegan! Clean and fast. Advancement couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Hopefully we will get a chance to get a little karting practice in before going overseas.

Brian (TX_Driven) - I didn't get to spend much time with him until the final hour. Another great sportsman. He knew Darwin and I were battling for needed points in the final round and never put either of us in a unnecessarily risky position. He raced us hard, but extremely clean.

Austin (TRC_Scooty) - lol. I get a chuckle just thinking of Austin. We didn't spend anytime together until the final photo shoots, but he had me laughing the whole time.

Darryl (GatorDarryl) - Good to shake your hand in person and bury our "hatchet." A fast competitor that I really thought had an excellent shot at being one of the final 16.

Mike Disser (Nissan North America) - I think he might actually read these forums.:sly: If you are.. Thanks again bud for making the event so much fun for my friends that showed up. Also thank you for making us competitors feel so welcome and important. I look forward to spending more time with you at Silverstone. What wig(s) are you going to bring?

Judges - I thought the officials had a difficult task to make the decisions on the fly. They all took their jobs very seriously and watched the races with utmost attention. I am not sure if they got every "call" right, but it wasn't for lack of effort.

Jordan (GTPlanet owner/creator) - Down to earth guy with a true passion for the GT series. Great to meet the man behind the location where I have made so many friends. He also did an excellent job in co-hosting the live coverage. Thanks Jordan!👍

I know there are a lot of people that I am missing. It was great to share the experience with so many great individuals. I believe many of the seventeen that didn't qualify for Silverstone, will be back next year, faster than ever.

As for Silverstone, I wish everyone the best of luck. But come time for competition, I will be gunning for you. :sly:

Great post Rees, and glad you made it through the gauntlet. Good luck in England 👍

stay classy san diego.

Great job Rees, glad you are making the trip overseas!

Great post too!

I really hope next year they allow old Silverstone finalists to compete again, the National Finals was so much fun I'd love to experience it again (if I was fast enough to make it).

Congrats again to this seasons Silverstone 16!

Thanks for sharing all these write-ups, guys, they are particularly enjoyable for me to read from your perspectives, having commentated some of these races! :)

I personally loved the wheel itself just the deadzone in brake pedal was weird it was like you had 35% brake or none at all, thats the best way i can explain it.

Hm, i never experienced this. I bought the T500 2 month ago and mine didn't had these deadzone problems. If i tip the break, it reacts immediatly. Maybe they fixed it with newer version or it's firmware related. I updated the firmware to the newest before i had the first ride with it.

At the end it's a solid wheel. The pedals are a bit cheap for a 500€ wheel but thats all. The wheel itself is great. The FFB effects are well defined and strong enough for everyone.

BUT, if you allready own a G27 it's not worth the 500€ for the T500. The G27 does its job very similar and costs the half. However, the DFGT gets blown away from the T500. The DFGT really is only a toy in my eyes, worst wheel i've ever owned...

Worst thing is, in Germany, i think we still have to go on DFGT for the national finals... These pedals are a disaster. :nervous:

iRacing has Silverstone and the track is laser scanned. But I would still get some real life experience instead of running on Silverstone in iRacing. One would benefit more by doing that, IMO.

If you have G25/G27 pedals, I think if you grind down the arm of the black plastic gear thing that's attached the potentiometer you'll get some deadzone. Obviously there's not really any way to fix that once you do it, but it's cheaper than buying a t500rs. That's how I had to fix my g25 pedals when I was getting brake drag.

There's a good picture of what I'm talking about on this page courteousy of my good racing buddy ttourist. It's the thing labeled "Potentiometer Gear".

John. You have plenty of speed to make it. Thank you for the help in preparation and the support leading up to the event. 👍

Like I said before, great job at the event Jordan.👍

It was great meeting you Reevos, only wish you the best of luck in silverstone. Make sure you enjoy it and give it 100%. Hope for nothing but the best for you.

I don't really consider it a sim, and the layout isn't updated, but Forza has 3 different ribbons of Silverstone.

You might wanna consider P-C.A.R.S, it has the updated Silverstone layouts. iRacing's version is great because it's a laser scan, but we are still using the outdated version until the re=scan finds itself into the game. right now the most current version is P-C.A.R.S

Odds that the finalists are running the Grand Prix layout for GT Academy I would think are probably pretty slim. Most likely you'll use the National layout for most of your races. In which case iRacing is the best thing you can get for that.

The Cadillac CTS-V is probably somewhat similar in power to the GT-R and the Mustang probably somewhat similar to the 370Z.

Every configuration is used.
