What's up guys, sorry for not getting in on this earlier, I had to catch an 11 hour flight to England the day after National Finals to visit family (yes I am British!) but am returning to the US tomorrow. It's a disadvantage missing a week of preparation, but don't get me wrong I will be more than ready. The one thing this week could prepare me for is dealing with jet-lag and driving on the other side of the car. I got to drive my dad's rental car so I now know what a shock it is at first to drive on the wrong side of the car/road, but I can reassure you guys it will be easier to adjust in a racetrack environment.
ANYWAYS, this will be my first ever post on GTP, so I am positive that some of these attempts to reply to posts will be an absolute disaster. Feel free to laugh so long as you correct what I do wrong!
First off, congrats to all 32 other competitors. To be honest I was primarily in shock with people's personalities, as everyone was down to earth and great to have conversations with. It was the last thing I was expecting from what was, no other way to say it, a video game competition. Could not have asked for a better set of guys to hangout with and share similar interests with. This year's competition was EIGHT times more competitive than the previous year, so it really is an unbelievable accomplishment for all of us to even make it to the national finals. I look forward to competing against the other top 15 in Silverstone, it's going to be the most intense 7 days of my entire life no doubt about it. As for those who didn't make it, I have been telling people that you are just playing it smart and going for two/three free trips to national finals before you go to Silverstone [: Stay committed, confident, and dedicated and I have NO doubt that you guys will make it, just don't forget that practice is EVERYTHING! This comes from the guy who lived as a basement dweller for the two weeks before competition, practicing 6-8 hours a day! Sacrificing opportunities to hangout with friends and family really pays off, and they ended up being fully supportive of me and can't thank them enough. Also being nervous is natural, I was no exception with my base heart rate in the physical not dropping below 111BPM!
Now for individuals that I meshed with over the weekend.
Eric/Redline - Knew we would be great competitors ever since the first time we raced online. Have to admit I liked you a lot better at the competition where the internet actually allowed you to see me! lol. Great race at Trial mountain, you really put me under pressure. Can't wait to compete with you at Silverstone, and I really hope they through a drifting event at us because I am incredibly curious to see your talent transfer from the game to real life!
Nick/Gumball - We were practicing with each other a lot the couple days before competition. Because of this I am fully aware of your skills, to be honest I was afraid of racing against you at finals but it never happened!
I have no doubt that you will stay confident and make it to Silverstone next year.
p.s. I agree with the Nissan spec racing 100%, not only is it good practice, I also found it great fun to race with an even playing field!
Joey/Fast - Probably the greatest personality there. Glad to have met you, same goes for your brother, his response is listed below. Usually when it comes to twins one gets some good genes while the other gets the rest. You two proved me wrong that's for sure! Both of you guys have an awesome skill set which shows with your professions, and you both are humorous and modest with your talents. I expect to see you at Silverstone next year Joey!
Daryl/Gator - You're an awesome guy, and racing with you online let me see how skilled you are. I have to say you must have been the most consistent guy I raced against, and definitely one of the guys i most feared facing in the competition. It appears luck was not on your side this year, but I encourage you to stay confident because you are an incredibly strong driver. I support you spending time with your family now, but I still expect to see you sneaking online getting some practice in for next year's GT Academy! [:
Nick/forced and Reese/reevos see my responses below vvv
As for everyone else, I wish there was enough time to get to know all of you as well as I did with these guys. I am very good at judging people, which comes in very handy at times. From what I was able to observe, every single one of you seemed to have an enjoyable personality to go along with your skills, and I hope to stay in touch with all of you on GTPlanet, the facebook page, and on GT5 itself!
Matt/TopGear: Super impressive driving for a 19 yr old young man. You could be totally killer over there, we'll see. Great personality, down to earth. I will enjoy battling with you; you deserve the opportunity to compete in Silverstone and I know you will shine.
Nick, thanks for the compliment. I think we went into the competition with the same mindset, and it helped us succeed (apart from our cape ring disasters!) lol. I also think we've got the same approach to driving, as I also recognize there is always room for improvement. I believe I have a natural talent with respect to driving efficiency (line) and car control, which is what allowed me to succeed at such a young age. But I am fully aware natural talent will only take me so far. Experience and the willingness to learn are what it takes to improve driving skills, and I think this natural mindset we have will give us an advantage at Silverstone(Not to single us out, I am sure other people will approach with this mindset as well). But Nick I have no doubt that we will be great friends and also great rivals at Silverstone, and it will be an incredible experience to learn from each other. Who knows maybe we can form an alliance to compete against the AltF4 team! lol [: Can't wait!
Matt (TopGear) - Unassuming and humble, yet showed he is one of the fastest sim racers when it counts. Congrats on your 38 pts for the competition! I hope you have a great pre-trip to England.
Thanks a lot Reese, I appreciate it! Very down to earth guy and I am glad we got to race against each other in the final round. It was the first race I watched when I found the stream, and it looks like you, Darwin, and Steve had an incredible race. Without all the pressure I am sure it would have been one of your most enjoyable races of GT5 haha. I am ecstatic that everyone in our final round made it to Silverstone and can't wait to compete with you guys!
Well that's it guys, I think I just set the world record for the longest first post of anyone on GTPlanet! [:
p.s. feel free to check out my Youtube channel for videos of me driving, I have videos of all three of my track days. Here is a link to my first track day which was held at laguna seca, I was only 17 years old (I lied to the organizers about my age hehehe don't tell!). I think its great to see my experimentation with car control which I had never done before, and the ease of finding efficient lines at the track. I hope it comforts you guys that have no car experience that the transfer to real life is not anywhere as difficult as it might sound!
