This race is a good opportunity to learn some historical facts.
Citta di Aria is based on a real location : the town of Assisi, Italy, homeland of St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order. A legend says that he tamed a wolf which was raiding the village of Gubbio, a few miles north of Assisi. And as you already know, the italian word for wolf is lupo.
With its short wheelbase and 200hp, driving our Lupo will be pretty challenging through the narrow roads of Assisi. So we will in a certain way try to tame il Lupo again.
... I know : dumb frenchman ! :D

I love that little car! Such a fun drive. Ill be sure to give this a spin.

I think spin is the correct word.
One definitely needs cojones to stay flat-out all the way through the downhill section after the start, and it sometimes ends up spinning around and bouncing from wall to wall.

FUN!!! Can't wait to try!

Don't know how much free time I'll have but I love the car and love the track...

BTW, went home at lunch to load up the car, and I could only get 197 HP based on the mods allowed.

Another NTSC/PAL deal?

-SHig

Definitely sounds like fun!! And GT-Mode, too!!! YAY! 👍 After I'm done with Week 51 (soon) I'll get started on this car...

You said Racing Hard tires (R2). So does that mean R1 and R2 are good, but not R3, R4, or R5? (I'm just thinking in terms of mixing front and rear compounds to help correct potential steering problems... I haven't even tested this car yet, so I have no clue if it'll be necessary -- I just want to know if the option is available.)

Oh, and are there any special races I need to win to "unlock" this car, or will it be available at the VW Dealer?

New at the VW dealer for 50k. 👍

So I won't have to rush up a championship to participate this one! :dopey:

As far as I know, that's correct. Racing-hard (R2) is the softest tyre you can use, but you can use harder (R1) if you like, or mix-and-match. :)

I think this race will be tough this week - I have a tendancy to pinball a bit on these narrower tracks. :nervous:

Still, practise makes perfect!

Yeah, me too... Once you bounce off one wall, it's inevitable that you'll ricochet back and forth for awhile...

I have the NTSC version, and I was able to get 200HP with the stage-1 turbo, racing exhaust, and an oil change (just like what is claimed in the first post on this thread.) This was on a brand new car that I just bought at the dealership.

If your car has some miles on it, then that's where the difference is coming from... If it doesn't have any miles on it, then I guess it might be another PAL/NTSC difference...

From the Suggestions Box thread:
TheWizard
Volkswagen Lupo at Citta' d'Aria?

I suppose that is San Francesco d'Assisi with a wolf (Lupo is Italian for wolf).

The Wizard.
Sometimes I hate being right ;)

I hope I will have some time to put into this race, at least during the weekend. I haven't touched GT4 in a good while...

Actually it would be an NTSC/NTSC difference. Because I'm PAL and have 200hp, Laurence is NTSC and has 200hp while Scott is NTSC and has 197hp.
Perhaps Scott's hp have been counted by floridian experts (j/k ;) ).

BTW, yeah, you can put RSH tyres or even mix RH/RSH if you find it useful.

Well, my Lupo has ZERO miles on it. Bought it new (from another memory card). Bright orange color!

Did two oil changes too to see if that made a difference...

Perhaps he has some mileage on his car, and that's where the drop in HP is coming from... (EDIT: Scott posted his reply just before I posted this one -- so ignore my comment about the mileage.)

LOL!!!! :D

Nice combo...and my favorite track too (maybe not my best, but my favorite).
I might make use of the RSH tires, if I can get it to drift in a REALLY confined space...

Off topic ish:
I won't be submitting for 51, I couldn't get any practice over spring break (and my spring break sucked too). So that ends my 3 week absense.... :P

EDIT: I like [lime] green
EDIT2: Some have mentioned spinning...how in the world? I'm having problems with severe understeer in certain places, I would love a bit of oversteer.

Sweeeeet pick for a FWD car Cyril! Love the setup on it too! Granted, I have yet to drive it, but I have a feeling... :)

I'll have some preliminary splits in an hour/two.

Wow Cyril. Wow. This thing is nuts! I forgot it had such short gearing down low... No traction in second gear... No traction in the rear... Lol. Somehow I managed a clean lap my second full lap around the track. Settings aren't stock. Who knows how much, if any they're helping me. This week'll be a tough one!

T1: 31.152
T2: 1'04.975

Who knows if I'll be able to knock that down to a 59.xxx at T2. I'm sure someone will be able to do it. We'll see how my learning of the track and the suspension workings go.

Speaking of which, this race might've been better in Arcade mode, IMO, because there'd be a tad less HP, and we wouldn't have to worry about setting the car up. But then again, I haven't driven it in arcade mode, and you probably have, and it might've been just too dang squirrely on stock suspension. I unno.

It's nuts. :)

Edit:
Two more laps in, on the stock suspension, it seemed to be a little more stable. That's probably because the ride height is even, where as with the Semi-Racing and Racing suspension the rear end is 18(mm?) higher. So I'll probably play around with that with the Racing suspension later.

T1: 28.783
T2: 1'01.951

So after 55 miles ish, (about 2-2.5 hours), I've figured(maybe) a few things out, and shaved some time off of my initial laps.

This car is nuts. Oh wait, I already knew that.

Ok, seriously. It wasn't the ride height so much that was causing the difference in grip levels between the stock and racing suspension, it was the CAMBER settings. This car is a LOT more stable with 0/0 camber rather than the 2/1 camber that comes stock on the racing suspension. The other thing I found out, is that with a softer rear swaybar, the car has MORE light rear ended snap oversteer. Aka, running 5/3 sways is bad. 5/5 is better. Haven't tried 5/7 yet, but it's in the plans. Uhm, probably learned some other stuff, but I don't know any specifics. I'm trying to maximise wheel contact with the road. That means softer suspension, with LOTS of travel, and not too stiff rebound settings.

The other thing is, I don't know HOW I'm going to go any faster without having to stop at EACH turn and make sure I didn't hit the wall. This is NUTS. Checking replays is going to be a major pain in the ass this week for anyone that's fast. Usually I can just watch the replay a couple times from the upper rear view, and be able to tell if I need to take a closer look in places. This week, when going downhill, you can't see CRAP. At one point in this lap, I think my mirror is a millimeter away from the wall, or through it, or farther away from it. I really don't know. But in the meantime, I don't care. I'm just going to save every lap I get until I need to submit, then I'll waste the hours trying to make sure if it's clean or not.

New splits,
T1: 26.882
T2: 59.564

I have no clue what the limits of this week's race will be, it all depends on how clean you want to call your turns(if you're going to be fast, you'll be millimeters away from, or in, every wall).

I really like the setup on the new TT that's out. It won't give you a lap time unless it's 100% clean by its standards. It's too bad they didn't think about this for GT4...

I've put 33 miles on mine so far and have come up with these:

DFP
T1 - 25.928
T2 - 57.901

*Edit* New splits after 55 miles:

DFP
T1 - 25.020
T2 - 56.395

I've been quite ameanable about sharing setups in the past but i think i might keep these to myself for a change. :sly:

And i sure wouldn't like to be using DS2 this week. :scared: That first downhill section is not the kinda place for using big jerky steering inputs.

Nice, and yeah, it's some scary ish... :nervous: :scared:  :dunce:

:)

handful of laps

T1: 26.0
T2: 58.4

put the ASM Oversteer on 1, it helps keep the rear end in check, and also TCS on 1...

would like to shave another 0.3-0.4 off of each sector yet...

Edit: new splits

25.705 (maybe another 0.1-0.2 in here - was on the limit the whole way)
57.982 (another 0.3-0.4 in here yet)

I don't want to give in to aids! I know it'll help though. And if I decide to run the combo more, I probably will end up doing so.

well flatty did it again ... these streets are so @@@@ narrow it's nearly impossible to manage clean laps ... i wonder how tempting its gonna be to submit almost clean laps :scared:
its fun tho to use some gt setup qualities. i hope dan and the other cracks will publish their settings during the week.

I managed a 25.542 T1 after 'bout 2 hours, but its really an uphill (or rather downhill) struggle
to be accurate with the ds2 this week :ill:

... if only the gods would send us sum settings :sly: (or money to buy DFP :) )

I had a quick go with this one earlier, seems like its all about set-ups this week:tup: as in stock form the Lupo is :yuck:

Enough torque steer to wrench the back end round at a moments notice and stiff enough to rattle fillings out - Had this been *REAL* I might have been tempted to stop on that back section and give the car a ritual beating with some tree branches ala "Basil Fawlty" style (The Brits might get that....:sly: )....

Dont get me wrong Im enjoying the combination of car/track from the quick go I had and will be spending a few days to get the setup working for this track and going for a time later on in the week I think. The little Wolf is showing promise already though even after a few tweaks - Findings so far are that - The race flywheel and triple clutch seem to help - The chassis rigidity doesnt!

regards

Dave

I'm not going to enterthis week. I tried 15 laps, but i only managed 1 clean lap and it was a very slow one. I really hate that car. I sold it again, it's never going to get back into my garage.
I have a tuned version of the standard one, and it goes alot better.
