No, they didn't. Release dates are tentative. They always have been, and they always will be. It doesn't even really matter what industry you are in, either, but it is especially applicable for software development. Even the most official set in stone shipping dates are subject to change, because you can not plan ahead for every setback. And PD obviously found a setback somewhere..

Not true, a release date is not tentative unless it is stated as being tentative.

Now, what would you suggest they do for it? Ignore it, and have a Day 1 patch instead?

The mistake has already been made, I'm not arguing as to how they should go about fixing it now. I'm simply pointing out that they shouldn't have given a definite release date (an optomistic one at that) when they didn't know for sure if the game would be polished by then.

You do realize what that entails, don't you? Depending on how big the bug is, there could be tons on negative publicity within the first few days of the game's launch. Think of every big name game that came out that needed major patches. Think of all of the screaming and complaining and yelling that said game went through. Think of all of the "they were really lazy with the testing in this game" posts that crop up on gaming blogs and message boards. Even worse, think of all the people who ended up suffering from the bug because they weren't able to get the latest updates and whatnot..

Just because I stated the simple truth that Sony gave us a release date which I clearly implied is now invalid (I DID NOT say they intentionally lied - as you claimed I did) doesn't mean you need to grasp for straws to defend Sony/PD's mistake (by bringing up how they should go about fixing the issue - which is something I haven't tried to argue from the get go).

I hope they jump on the "Hey-lets-sell-the-game-after-Xmas-so-no-one-buys-it-cause-everyones-broke" Idea. That would be some 6 figures Marketing skills right there. BLING BLING!! $$$$

I swear there has been a reply every minute in this thread since it was made.

I firmly believe (yes I'm crazy) we are heading for a end of year 2010 release. :dopey:

Sony if they had any sense would be pushing for a pre christmas release so if even on the 23-24rd they would want it released.

Great article,Guy's you should read it!

Gran Turismo 5 Delay: Sorry Doesn't Cut It

Caution: I'm pissed. This article is going to be a severe rant, brought on by 6 years of waiting for a game that I may never actually have in my home. So yes, go ahead and vote this article down, saying I'm just upset and whatever else... because it's true.

Do you remember Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec? Spending hours upon hours upgrading your car to become the greatest racer in the world? How incredibly wonderful the graphics were, and how you couldn't see it ever getting better? Then Gran Turismo 4 was released, and while not quite as epic as 3, it was still far ahead of it's time. Just when we never thought it could get better, this glowing announcement from Sony in 2006 came upon us like a flash from the heavens.

That announcement: Gran Turismo 5.

Since that E3 2006 press release, we have heard interviews from Yamauchi in 2008, more announcements at every E3 following (especially in 2009), a prologue game release to whet our appetites, and the hardest thing of all: I played it at E3 2010 in glorious, mind-numbing 3D.

Originally slated to be released in March 2010 (in Japan), it missed that deadline. Sony came back to say it would be released on November 2nd, 2010 in Europe and North America, November 3rd, 2010 in Japan, and November 4th, 2010 in Australia. This news at E3 couldn't have been any more exciting, with hundreds of people changing their preorders to make room for this long awaited gem.

Well, bad news folks. Once again Sony has delayed the release of Gran Turismo 5. To when you ask? That's a great question! All they are telling us is "this holiday season". Several publications, including ourselves, have followed up with them to confirm "this holiday season" meant by the end of 2010. Their response? Not necessarily. UPDATE: Sony has announced the release will be before Christmas. They are claiming that there needs to be some added polish before release. The question I have for you is: when is enough, enough?

If you're anything like myself, you just want this game to be released already. I'm to the point now where I just don't care anymore. I'm more than jaded at the fact that Sony thinks they can constantly push the release date back on this game, under the assumption that we, the customer, will still buy it as if nothing happened. If other popular games were delayed as frequently as Gran Turismo 5, there would be a huge drop in retail purchases and a lot of really pissed off fans.

I hate to say it, but I hope this happens with Gran Turismo 5.

Here's what Sony had to say about the recent delay:

"We sincerely apologise to GT fans for the delay, however, creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating the perfect racing experience, and we are confident that this ambitious game will exceed expectations when it launches."

Something needs to be done about this blatant disrespect for us gamers. I'm so sick of having the golden carrot hanging in front of my face, only to never be able to catch it. Sorry doesn't cut it in this situation, and I hope that I'm not the only one that feels this way.

While I realize there is nothing consumers can do, we can definitely make a fuss about it. Simple moves like waiting a few days after luanch to buy the game, or emailing Sony and Polyphony Digital will go a long way. I realize that neither Sony nor Polyphony Digital necessarily owe us anything, and that I am being fairly whiny in this editorial, but I hope I am speaking for the masses here. They need to stop making promises they can't keep. It's tainting both the game and the development team behind it in my opinion.

So I leave you with this. Are you as fed up with the bullsh** as I am? Also, when the next "release date" is announced, will you believe it reported to be released before Christmas, should we believe it? Will you go out and buy this on release? Let us know in the comments below.

OK Time to add a little bit of fun here:

Come up with funniest reason you can think of for the delay:nervous:

Here's mine:

:sly:China didn't make enough of them "little cars" for the CE edition so PD delayed the release.:sly:

To Scaff I'm feeling your pain having to edit post I'm glad you are:tup:. Do you think this will be the top "infractions" thread beating out the "Funny picture" thread. I think it will!

Rome got mad for using the Colosseum in the game and demanded it be removed, along with the Rome course. They were so mad, they wanted all Italian cars removed.............and red cars too.

My apologies for any comments that may have offended, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one feeling hugely annoyed right now.
This better be the last delay.

As long as it makes it out for Chrimbo (British slang for Christmas for those outside the UK), all is not completely lost.

But let me get one thing absolutely straight: the patience of myself and others waiting for this game is now begging to wear very thin....

My apologies for any comments that may have offended, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one feeling hugely annoyed right now.
This better be the last delay.

Yup quite right there, I'm just venting rage into Dawn of War where I set PD as purple necrons and began the killing festival... on easy difficulty. [/offtopic]

I am actually surprised I am taking this so well, guess the venting is doing me no ends worth of goodness.

The manuals were all printed in Ancient Greek.

And this is a problem?

As for the obligatory non-humorous suggested reason for the delay: PD realised that the SLS model used in game has its windscreen wipers mounted on the opposite side from the real car. They're currently negotiating with Mercedes and AMG for a worldwide recall to be issued to correct all affected cars.

Hmmm... Gran Turismo can - if you squint a little - be translated into "Long Journey", so PD is simply making sure the name holds true!

Truly, a bitter disappointment after such a long, arduous wait.

Oh well, same old, same old.

Whats a GT fan to do?

EDIT: News flash: PD explains reason for the delay:
PD will have to repaint the the game, seeing they polished all the paint off of it.

Don't worry guys, the game will come out soon!

Hehehehhehehe

Hahahhahahahahahahahahahahah

*sigh*

Not true, a release date is not tentative unless it is stated as being tentative.
That is an unbelievably naive way of looking at the situation.
Release dates depend on circumstance. There is no arguing that. They just do. Unforeseen problems in development change release dates around all the time. There is no arguing that either. You cannot plan for everything, and all release dates are always subject to change because you cannot plan for everything.

I'm simply pointing out that they shouldn't have given a definite release date (an optomistic one at that) when they didn't know for sure if the game would be polished by then.
All this tells me is that you don't actually know anything about software development, or indeed, product development in general. Especially when you are passing such heavy-handed judgment when we don't even know why the game was delayed. You can not guarantee that things will go smoothly when programming software. It is impossible. To complain that PD wasn't able to iron out their problems by that point just shows ignorance, because you are essentially saying that they should have been able to plan ahead for something that couldn't be planned ahead for.

Just because I stated the simple truth that Sony gave us a release date which I clearly implied is now invalid (I DID NOT say it was intentional) doesn't mean you need to grasp a straws to defend Sony/PD's mistake (by bringing up how they should go about fixing the issue - which is something I haven't tried to argue from the get go).
Its not about defending PD. It wasn't even, strictly speaking, a response to your post specifically. It was more a general response to the overall sentiment in this thread that they should have simply released it regardless to honor the release date, and that not doing so was "wrong." There are two sides to every coin. It isn't a black and white "Sony/PD made a mistake" situation, because there would be negative consequences regardless of what action they took.

At least i can get my moneys worth out of dead rising 2, f1 2010 and fallout new vegas now. im expecting gt5 in easter 2011.

just got off the phone and got my refund being wired back to my credit card. I will not pick this up even when it comes out. I will wait and see if its really worth it. I was going to buy a ps3 as well on the day it comes out

Nobody who is into GT games enough to sign up to a dedicated forum is going to turn away from GT5, when ever it is released. You are just having a dummy spit. You will buy the game along with the rest of us and you know it.

"PD is already working on GT6" does not mean that everyone at PD was working on GT6..

Ky never said that they were working on GT6, that is a myth. He only said that the car models where detailed enough to be included in GT6 and since they would not have to remake them, in that regard they have started work on GT6.

Note that the above should also shoot down the 'PS2 standard car' people. Better than needed car models would have been developed for GT4, then scaled into the game. Standard models appearing in GT5 would be of a higher standard than in GT4.

KY did say they were working on gt6.

The go karts were originally intended for gt6.
News was leaked( as usual ) by some Sony bigwig.

Kaz said he felt compelled to add them as news had been broken. But he was going to put them in gt6.

That is the truth.
