I'd think Kaz would have PLENTY of ideas about what to do with 25% more RAM. (70MB of 256MB total). Maybe even enough ideas to want to DELAY releasing the game. Just MHO.

the PS3 have 512MB of total memory, two pools of 256MB each (CPU/GPU) ;)

that "extra ram" was not given to the developers all at once now, Sony optimized the OS memory footprint over the years with fw updates to reduce it, the "big point" was back in fw 2.0 and 2.4 when they started using HDD Virtual Memory for system tasks and considerably reduced the ingame OS memory needs

I think GT5 is probably already beneficiating from that with damage, a lot more polygons per car (compared to 5P), an extra "layer" of AA and etc 👍

That'll explain why the XMB is so slow!! Good info, thanks. 👍

It doesn't really work like that. RAM is only one part of the system, you could put some data in it but it would still need to be processed by cpu/gpu for whatever use you wanted to use that data for.

Yes, but processing on the CPU needs RAM, so it's a big boon. Anyway, rescheduling tasks for the CPU and GPU is child's play compared to dynamically allocating different data to memory at the right time.

Assuming all the systems are in place already i.e. a suitable lighting and shading method, provision for dynamic (spatially and temporally) surface grip. there is no reason to think that these would necessarily take that much more processing time. Then it's just a case of tracking a few new variables in memory, and bam! Dynamic shiznit all round!

I'm pretty sure Kaz said they'd faffed with weather effects and was happy with them, it was just a case of whether they added anything to the game experience. So the systems are in place (at least in prototypes) for the visual element of weather, the "physical" element is a tiny bit of extra processing and a chunk of memory away from realisation.

This is more of a "We can't reveal you to any details at this point", rather than, "We don't know if we will be in or not", kind of response.

Or possibly even a 'I can't be arsed to answer a question about a computer game' kind of response.

I think people need to be a bit more realistic about the importance of this to other people. Yes, it's an enjoyable game and like many I am looking forward to it being released. But it really isn't going to figure highly in the thoughts of the marketing personnel at a car manufacturer.

Edit: It's always fun to e-mail major companies with silly questions however. Ever since I found out ACME was a real company i've sent them the occasional e-mail asking for big springs to help me run faster or pictures of fake roads that I can stick to cliff faces. Probably gives somebody a chuckle if nothing else.

It says 2008 on the pictures, kolego.

Hey guys, I kinda have some good news. Sony somehow squeezed some 70 MB additional RAM out of the PS3, so, let's assume GT5 is gonna hit the stores in summer or later, Polyphony would have enough time to use this additional RAM for let's say dynamic weather or dynamic day-night cycle, what do you think?

link: http://gamersyde.com/index_en.html on the right site in the news section

They didn't pull 70mb out of their poop chutes. The memory was previously allocated for the OS, now it's freed up to be used by other things.

I take that back, your right, the side inlet gives it away.

It looks to me like everything in the shot gives it away.

I think I've just figured something out.

hehe...:)

The GT5 trailer included on the God of War 3 disc is a brand new trailer.

I have a friend who got a review copy of the game and he says it's very impressive. I asked if it showed a Ferrari racing round a city at night getting smashed up (the secret TGS trailer) and he said it's not that, he also said that it's not the AGS trailer we saw either (showing Rome/Madrid/Tsukuba tracks and two cars racing a plane on the Top Gear track).

I'm quite excited to see it now since it appears to be completely new and made specially to show off to people that bought GOW3. So there you have it, brand new GT5 trailer on March 19th :D

So could you ask him what IS in the trailer?

Has he commented on what's actually in the trailer? He needs to leak the trailer to youtube (anonymously of course)

He won't say what's in the trailer yet or anything, all he could do is confirm it wasn't either of the two trailers that I mentioned. He takes his job pretty seriously and doesn't wanna get into trouble for spilling anything so I'm not gonna nag him. I'll be grabbing GOW3 on March 19th anyways and the first thing I'll be doing is checking out the GT5 trailer anyways so if no-one has posted about it by then I will (or earlier since I sometimes get games a couple days before release date anyways).

Be patient though! Sounds like we have something to look forward to 👍

Exciting, something new! At that moment, it will be the first 'news' after 2 months...
Looking forward to that. Hopefully before something at GDC too.. Waiting, waiting,
I've become a master at waiting thanks to PD

Well at least we know for sure that there is something to look forward to instead of being disappointed with a trailer we've already seen. Can't wait!

Don't get your hopes up, for all we know it could be the E3 trailer or Toyota FT-86, SLS or anything (besided the AGS trailer).

Mine has the same layout, but different photo's. E.g. one with a banner showing Ferrari's Pista di Fiorano. Oh, and Spec III i.s.o. Spec II on the top. :sly:

You really think that for more dynamics in the environment that extra memory is the important factor and that only a 'tiny bit' of extra work from the cpu/gpu to process the extra data is required?

Anyway, rescheduling tasks for the CPU and GPU is child's play compared to dynamically allocating different data to memory at the right time.

Lmao, you can't just move things around in the pipeline and with so much happening in parallel to squeeze as much as possible out the machine every instruction of every subroutine will have it's time and place.

This trailer on the GOW3 disc is far longer than anything released by PD, so I suspect it's not of any of the old videos
