Speedy Gran Turismo 5 Impressions: Bumper Falls Off, Heads Theoretically Turn

Just got back from a Sony showcase a few blocks from Kotaku's NYC office. Heading back over there post-haste. Had a few minutes to try to wreck a car in Gran Turismo 5 and learn about the game's head-tracking.

A Sony representative was showing Polyphony Digital's upcoming PlayStation 3 racing game, and let me drive a couple of laps around a city track. What does me, a non Gran Turismo player do? Fall into last place and start bumping into walls.

My Audi TT took no damage even as I bashed it against the wall. The Sony rep explained to me that damage for that car wasn't in the demo. Damage was being shown on a Subaru WRC Impreza, the same virtual car McWhertor wrecked in Germany.

I smacked the Subaru into walls until its doors were flying open and its fenders were scratched. The Sony man took over and got the bumper to nearly fall off. He said he's gotten the hood knocked off too and that beneath these busted bits Polyphony has rendered the innards of the car. We'll be able to see behind the damage.

And it's not just cosmetic damage, I was told. The car's performance will be impaired if the vehicle is roughed up. Gears might not shift as well, for example.

The other stand-out feature I was told about was head-tracking. The game will support the PlayStation 3 camera, the PlayStation Eye. While one wasn't hooked up at today's event, it was explained that the device will track a player's head movements. The goal is for the depth-of-field focal point far down the track to shift, matching your head movement. What you look at will be appear more clearly, in theory. So as you look a little to the right, the right part of what you see beyond your car may come more sharply into focus. But the car itself won't turn with your head, of course.

The Sony rep explained that Polyphony's goal is for players to feel like they are experiencing what real racers see. He noted that the feature was still a work in progress and couldn't offer more details about how it works. From his gestures, I suspect the head-tracking will be responsive more to leans than to head turns, the latter of which obviously would make it hard to see the TV.

With neither the head-tracking incorporated into this demo nor the performance effects of the car damage evident to a series novice like myself, I can't judge either feature. But they sound like the attention to deal the series is respected for.

Gran Turismo is slated for a PS3 release some time next year.

I still have doubts about head tracking. Thus far it seems like another Sixxaxis, it sounds like a good idea but when it is put in place it just doesn't live up to the hype.

Head tracking sounds like a good idea, being an actual racer myself, "sighting your sights" at the apex before coming to a corner is a good technique to set oneself up before entering the corner.

On a separate subject, an issue with video games being delayed for so long (or in development for so long, as with the case with GT5) allows for a lot of unrealistic anticipations from potential players... The page before this on this thread has people geeking out over the amount of spectators to attend different calibers of GT races... I don't realistically see PD developing the game in a manner which allows for more spectators at some races rather than others (it'd be cool if they did though, don't get me wrong). What would be cool, and more realistic, is if the cars get realistically dirty. The "Car Wash" has been a staple of the GT series since its inception. Yes, the cars lose their glossy shine after races, especially during dirt races in GT4. But, after a 24HR enduro, or a GP distance race, I would expect brake dust to be covering the wheel wells and dirt pitted onto the nose of the car. Although the game is late into its programming and this probably won't be seen in the game, I thought that it would be a cool addition.

Since people were geeking out over the spectators that may or may not be attending virtual races, I wanted to geek out over this. It would be a cool inclusion if it did happen...

Note this is just a theory.

I think I may have just stumbled upon GT's release date... when the PS3 motion controller comes out. Think about it... lots of GT5 fans will pick up a PS Eye to enjoy this feature, this would create the highest volume of current and potential PS Eye owners which would then be more likely to purchase the new PS wand thingy. This would create a huge amount of buzz. Now owners of the PS Eye would be more likely to purchase the wands because they already have the eye. Not to mention the releases would not interfere with each other demographically.

Again, a theory.

Iam going to buy a PS Eye for sure! I never wanted one, because there were no games, that were actually werth it (exept for Burnout Paradise and Fifa 10), but GT5 is the game that i bought my PS3 for and i will buy everything to make use of every single feature.

As far as the Wand is concerned, iam on the fence right now. If they should release a decent Game, that uses the Wand effectively, i might actually buy it, or at least rent it.
They had a nice demo at E3, where they showed the use of the Wand for sword, shield and longbow, wich really impressed me. If they should release a Game similar to Oblivion, the Wand is a day one buy for me!
Having two controllers is a good thing i guess, far better than no controller at all, since you can map actions to the buttons, like opening your inventory (in Oblivion for example) and actually move foreward in a 3D inviroment.

Ah sh**, i just wet my pants... :D

The explanation for the headtracking reminds me of Uncharted 2 - the way things are more in or out of focus according to where your reticle is pointing. Maybe it's someting of this sort.

There are a few other popular games that use PS eye: Singstar, Buzz, Eyepet... :)

It woorks fine. But olny when the Lights are on! I´m used to Play in a dark room and i am wondering how i can avoid this?
I Play on a video projector. Any suggestions?

Uplighters that is a table lamp except the light shines up.Or does the whole room need light ?.Maybe wall lights are a better idea, so light is spread across the room.

While I have TRACK IR on my PC, its great idea and it works great as well.. I do not get how PS3 EYE and GT5 will be different as mentioned on front page since track ir is same basic idea, it fallows your head (3 dots on your head) also you can lean left and right, up and down, in and out not to mention look all derections... someone care to explain to me? I hope PS EYE works like that as well.

This will be amazing for the gt series and immersion. Imagine buying a new car then free roaming around it in your garage. Then get in and take a look around the interior. Assuming interior mods will be available you could appreciate the new trim, seats, roll cage you've added. I'm purely speculating, but the possibilities go way beyond just free look while racing.💡

Guess I'm going to have to get a PSEye now.

I wonder whats next though a fan for open cockpit racing? Fan speeds up when you speed up and decreases when you slow down! :sly:

I bet you Play Asia is going to have field day when GT5 comes out. FF13 as well (isn't it already out?). As long as the language can be change it is likely that is the route I am going to take.

+1.

But, I don't believe what Gamespot has to say. I only believe what comes straight from Sony. Someone contact Sony and see if they respond.

Well if true at least we can play The Getaway 3 if it's out before then, before you ask this & 8 Days WASN'T cancelled. Both games were on hold.

Something tells me that GT5 will be withing weeks of Japanese release, PD said its up to the SONY Marketing team, so it seems PD already finish all translations into English, and other European languages. The GT5 demo is same day for Europe and NA so it seems Sony wants the game to be a world wide resale within the same week.

Anyone knows if Japan is getting the demo as well? Also same day?
