I know why that's familiar. It looks like the stupid "Gym" thingy in I think Forza 1 or was it Sega GT. There was a game with something like the gym course in GT4, but it had a stupid barrier in the middle of it.

I dont understand the big deal about the track editor? Is it going to be making up fantasy tracks withs flips ( if so I would not be appy at all) or making actual real life tracks. I dont know why everyone is so bummed about it being false?

I think most people dream of recreating endless real world tracks that don't make it into the game as well as just getting creative.

Unfortunately I just can't see a track editor capable of what many of us want to do... I mean just imagine the depth that would have to go into creating a smaller circuit track... if it takes GT years to model tracks, how could they create an editor that allows us to make even decent tracks in a managemable way?

Agreed.

I'm guessing what PD did is take the same tools they use to make tracks and simplify them into easy to use tools for us. I doubt it's really that hard. The reason it takes up to 3 years to build a track is because PD don't have a huge number of employees, and because they want the track to be exactly like the real thing. (And I mean EXACTLY)

I think it will be for the go-karts, and pretty restrictive in size (but able to run anything from your garage). Also 'flat' with no elevation changes. Be cool to set up an auto discipline time trial (could do that with cones on the gymkhana), cant remember the correct term for it..

I believe there has been course editors out for golf games for quite some time now and those guys make some pretty realistic courses. It can be done, it just takes time and effort.

I think you'll be able to create real life tracks accurately looking at videos and photos. But it takes PD so long because they are painting every rock the right shade of grey and giving each blade of grass the right physics taking into account shape and weight.

As long as we can make a track however we want they can just give us an autofill for the surroundings. :) City, GP track, forest etc.

Just a quick look take a look at Rfactor, a game I just became aware of that heavily embraces the modding community, Heres a user created track Bahrain, I think its actually a group of people or a company even but its an example of whats possible:

http://www.ctdpworld.org/index.php/bahrain-screenshots.html

That's done on a PC with all the associated abilities and supporting apps...

And remember in GT we are going to want to see road courses... which means a track editor with a huge foundation to build on and a ton of options to be worked over like terrain, elevations, road pitch and grade... all with a PS3 controller on a console. Not saying it's not possible... but the logistics seem pressed at best...

A track creator certainly sounds like it has great potential, lets hope it's what we hope it is. I am not going to get ahead of myself though.

I'm not saying that this example is, but many of the custom tracks from Rfactor have been ported from other games such as toca touring cars or similar games. I'm not sure how legal this is and even if you could do this with the PS3 i'm not so sure that Sony would be happy with the possibility of lawsuits...

If there's a track editor, I would expect that making equivalents to Complex String is about the best it can possibly be. Unless they give us some amazing terrain mapping tool and a way to lay interesting track (not just a sequence of radiuses), a library of trees, sandpits, buildings, curbs, barriers, grandstands, etc..

I dunno, perhaps it is possible, but I get the feeling that is total dreamland :P

Would be awesome if we could recreate all 44 miles of the Targa Florio, but I seriously doubt it. One can dream, eh?

Then again, this could be the reason for the delays,

I was thinking the creator might be made up of a bunch of pre-designed elements and a terrain editor that we can edit and combine to make our tracks. Since it would all be pre-designed, it would still look good, as long as we take time.

I'm seeing High Speed Bowls and Super long straight aways (If done, it should be at a 45 degree angle or more to help with acceleration)...and then I see, if possible Skl jumps just for fun...maybe into a lake if possible. for a "Long jump contest"

Normaly base of 3D maping track editor is like map editor for FPS game for exmple.

They 'r some Entity model like (Trees, road panels, Tire Safety barriers, déco cars) and after you would creat the house brsuh by brush, but maybe GT5's will have prefab (pre-designed houses, building etc..)

Track design will be like BTB (Bob track builder) with polygones base and it will be textured.
Build a map (FPS exemple) is like play Lego, it's really same and easy when you mastery the base of the softwar.

We've been misled by magazine interviews in the past, I'd say this could be more of the same. If the track editor was anything serious, I don't think PD would have kept it secret until now.
There are two more conventions to go. Kaz said he'd be unveiling information all along the way to release.

I say take what PD is giving us for tracks and cars and be happy with it. Is that too much too ask?
Well, I say, if they're offering it to us, yes please! ;)

I think ModNation Racers shows what's possible with a track creator. You can download the free demo on the PS Store and play with it. I bought the game and have been amazed at how feature rich and easy to get into it is.

I'm hoping this is the form it takes, and from the "share your tracks" remark, it sounds likely.

I think the Track Editor will be something closer to what V-Rally did about 10 years ago, you will probably pick a venue, closed circuit, city, rally etc.,
layout your track design & some other basic parameters, finish. The software will then fill in the blanks such as adding buildings & trees. I use Bobs Track Builder,
but it is only a vehicle to building a track, you need other software to create the objects, such as 3d Studio, Sketchup, 3DSimED, Photoshop to make it all possible & a lot of time.
What makes a track stand out are those objects such as Dunlop Bridge & other iconic things that have to be created.
PD will more likely go the route of Turn 10 with limiting the ability to import images into the game. But like I said earlier based on something like V-Rally,
it could create some interesting and unique tracks, but will have trouble replicating real world tracks because of the limited ability to create objects & import textures.:)

If & when this supercool feature becomes available, what tracks would you build? These are mine:

1. El Capitan: likely not to be in the game and by far the best track I've ever used.
2. Any of the other GT4 non-real tracks missing in GT5 like Trial Mountain, Grand Valley and Deep Forest.
3. The Lewis Hamilton F1 supertrack.

Press X to win? There is nothing easy about taking fast corners on a fast track. It's a balancing act on the edge of tyre grip.

[JOKING]

Interludes plays with full downforce front and back, short gear ratios and super-soft tyres. He then takes off tyre wear, sets AI to easy and ... voilá ... he presses X to win!

Sorry, but I can't recall once when I did that in GT4. I tend to buy a car, add or subtract a few parts as needed, and go racing. I do the best I can with what I get; there are no subtleties. Take Suzuka for instance - I just drive. And I know I'd be bored to death if every corner was like 130R.

Have you tried prologue or the time trial demo?

Btw I think that circuit looks dumb too.
