There are people who habitually wait until a game is a certain price before buying it, and in the modern age of gaming, the time difference brings extra benefits, like patched bugs and extra content...
The only reason to buy a game at launch (other than to play it sooner, obviously) is to be a part of the social hubbub that surrounds it. In some ways it can be like going to the movies; if you don't see it when everyone else does, you're practically excluded. You pay extra for the social benefits, too, in other words.
