I always found the 787b to be good on fuel mileage if you don't wind it out too much, the rotary helps with the torque, in other words even short shifting it doesn't really bog down like other cars, at least in my past experiences with fuel savingExcept for me, who went from 8th to 1st on lap one, and led the first 3 laps the 787B, only to end up finishing 25 seconds behind the winner, after stopping for gas.
I migrated to race B, where I had some success, until I met up with @deviln3, who whipped me good.
