1.54 update:

Applicable only for :

PlayStation®5 Pro
Display settings:
  ・8K resolution compatibility.
・Enhanced rendering quality in VR Mode.
・Smoother video playback in VR Mode, achieved through the VR Positional Reprojection function.

8K res compatibility: PS5 = no; PS5 Pro = yes
Since I don't have any 8K TV, then this function and benefits do not apply to me.

Enhanced VR2 rendering quality: PS5 = no; PS5 Pro = Yes !
How much better is this objectively? I am waiting for DF to deliberate before I see the value of a PS5 Pro.

Smooth VR2 video playback thru Positional Report: PS5 = No; PS5 Pro = Yes
This is for video pass through no ? I am not sure i fully understand what this is for actually, does this apply to me ?

I believe this is the video we see of the surrounding when we do a video pass through, and currently with the OG PS5, there is a weird lag and I always feel dizzy looking at my surroundings, so i try not and would rather lift up the VR headset if I want to step out... It's a simple work around that I don't mind, and thus doesn't justify enough the purchase of a PS5 Pro...

So right now, I don't see the rush to upgrade in my situation.

Going to give my first impressions after 5 minutes test. Nurburgring with full grid AI, wet conditions during day.
Stationary I can see higher resolution of the cockpit, especially the HUD overlay putting my head closer it looks like what us VR users would call 8k if you know what I mean, never seen a res so high in VR.
The overall frame rate seems faster or smoother. Now driving, what I see is the elimination of close reprojection say on cars I overtake and barriers next to me, but see an increase in reprojection at further distances like a fence or the treelines. So its still reprojected but in a better way for driving a track.
The downsides... the mirrors are bad again, very low framerate, we are not getting the high frame rate on the pro I enjoyed before the patch came out. So annoyed by that, it takes realism out of the experience.
Also the spray effects are bad resolution again, like on the standard PS5, not getting the higher res and animation of spray pre patch on the Pro. dissapointing. I can understand though because other details have been added. Also noticed an occaisonal LOD pop in of a car ahead. But I still had lots of fun driving the MX5 in the wet against lots of other cars.

NowI just need to check the option I heard of, there is a GT graphics option, I am on the default, will see if VR allows for the option change. But I want my realtime mirrors back for sure.
I love the reprojection change though, a good compromise.

Color me stupid,
What is reproduction ?

I had to educate myself and this is what I found googling:

What is re-projection? : r/Vive
To summarise without getting technical it'll lock your VR frame rate to 45 whenever your system can't maintain 90Hz.

Having looked up reproduction
I still don't know exactly what I am looking for....
How do I even notice it ?
I don't know what I am looking for...

I guess it doesn't bother me much if I don't know what I am looking for...

I have to say I just tried all the different modes and cant see the difference between them.
I think the general way the reprojecting is done now is different to before thats clear to see.
Unless someone can guide me on what to look for.

What I have just experienced that I dont like is while driving I noticed the whole car vibrating which is easy to see on the MX5 open roofline and A pillar. Unpleasant, I stop the car and it still does it. The car shakes and all the mirrors are shaking. Not nice at all. I really cant remmeber this happening before. Its a bit nauseating. Hope its not deliberate way of the physics showing car vibration as our eyes are not meant to see it. Its a bit like that previous challenge on standard PS5 with the truck in the snow in VR the whole thing just shakes and feels awful. Its a bit like that. Anyone else notice? Thats on all modes.

Edit: just wanted to add a nice thing though, as I was parked up in the rain, i was also just admiring see the rain splat down around, seeing the marshals waves the flags, the wipers going really fast. And the wind shooting the rain sideways across the track lower down the hill, and the glass windscreen looking real and even more so moving my head towards it. There is extra stuff going on I feel. more than just simple resolution and frame boost. With no other cars and not moving myself the rain/spray effect on track is good, another sign of it being dynamic for performance.

I need the graphics options to do something. I know I could tune the settings to how I like them best If I had the option, and even for each track, for if it gets wet or how many cars etc. Also need to turn off the car vibration simulation!

turn new reprojection algorithm on and you will see no more ghosting when overtaking car and in vr replays

I dont see the reprojection on cars anymore on either mode.

Right I have tried a daily race and had to quit, for me it was unplayable with the new setting. Problems with the Hud, I was in the Gr3 suzuki, I got some focus problems/blur on the outer bits like eye tracking was not working at all. Then in the middle when i got a penalty the central red box was in focus and clear but then it started braking apart and tearing. I couldnt drive with that distraction so I quit instantly. The option I had on was the new reprojection mode which does come with a warning for artifacts.
I think PD are doing a good job with the VR but they are not ready yet.

I am wondering if there is some hardware instability going on with this patch.

I had very limited time on the new TT with the enhanced VR mode enabled. Looking out the side window it definitely is clearer without the ghosting. The dash is also super clear.

What I notice though is for the projected text of the gear selection and timer that floats in the windscreen, I notice a lot more double imaging/ghosting of that. Before i never noticed it and I wonder if this is now getting reprojected whereas in the past it was not. It could also be an eye tracking thing. I notice ghosting of this text when it is in my periphery but if I look directly at it, it becomes focused again.

I need to spend a lot more time on it though, which I will not be able to do until tomorrow as my wife's birthday is tonight.

Had the pro for a week before the patch, and saw some minor improvements. W an hour on the patch some more still. Tried frame rate, graphics priority and reprojection w both.

Graphics priority was noticebly better looking vs not feeling much benefit from frame rate priorty. Reprojection mixed, better in some ways, but the graphics artifacts on the hud visuals distracting to me. Mirrors lost a bit on Pro after the patch

Detail in distance defintely improved, pretty much limited by panel resolution now - check out stars at night

VR replay still some ghosting 90 deg to moving cars but improved. Draw distance for terrain and other sideline textures still drop in about the same as before

The HUD is a complete mess. Try crashing into the back of a car hard or a wall and watch the timer vibrate uncontrollably. Problem is I'm not seeing any difference now even if I try to go back to the "old" settings. Only time it looks good is if I don't move my head.
I have tried every combo with no luck.

Okay, so until I get home, do I need to buy a PS5P or still hold off and stay with my Ps5 until a possible next PSVR2 visual update?
Honestly at this point the pro is not worth it just for this game, it needs work. My 2 cents.

I think there might be an issue with it changing modes. You can change option while still in a track session, but maybe its best to go back to the main home screen of GT7. (regarding reprojection menu, not priority menu which I think its not relevent to VR users)
Half of me wants the old version back for stability. But the new stuff loks nice when it works. I hope we get a new update soon.

IMHO I wouldn't upgrade to the Pro just for GT7, VR or flat screen after testing it for quite a while today. I'm going to sell my OG disk PS5 to my niece for $300 and I knew that before I bought the Pro.

Other games like TLOU part 1 Pro Enhanced, etc. look pretty amazing even though I usually don't play those types of games, it looks great and is a good game. And I was curious to see how the Pro would do with GT7 for myself.

It's not a bad upgrade but there's lots of downgrades too and that sucks. All the shimmering and image instability and bugs on flat screen GT7 Pro Enhanced looks like crap sometimes actually and in some important ways, OG PS5 looks better to me on flat screen. I wish there was a pre-patch mode on PS5 Pro for flat screen GT7, it ran great and looked great, just no RT reflections while driving which I've discovered I don't care about and I think is waste of GFX horsepower.

VR is also a mixed bag but mostly it's an upgrade, but not a $700 upgrade. GT7 flat and VR looked great and ran ptretty good before the Pro though.
If you know you can sell OG PS5 or don't have a PS5 yet it's not a bad buy.

Overall I'm not that impressed with GT7 Pro patch yet but still not regretting the Pro because I'll have for years and get a lot of use out of other than in GT7. And I'm offsetting the cost by selling the OG model, $400 isn't that much money these days anyways. I can spend that on one trip to the grocery store without trying too hard. 🤷‍♂️

IMO if you skip the Pro for GT7, even for VR, you're not missing out on that much really! Don't get sucked into FOMO. I'm thinking PD will continue to refine it and eventually it might be a bigger upgrade than we're seeing on day one.

It's not completely wireless you have to take it out of the box and plug it in.
Good thing you told me, I was just playing with the box. 🤔 Wondered why it was so heavy. Remembered there are 500+ cars in there. :sly:

Edit: First off, the controller buttons feel much softer.

New W196 HUD is doubled and stretched out in VR with the new reprojection setting activated. Doesn’t show in screenshots or video.

It makes that setting unusable. Not sure if it’s only that car. I was on Tokyo grind race. Not sure if it’s track specific either. Maybe someone can check it out and confirm.
Yes. It also happens with the Honda and slightly with the MP4/4.

Couple of hiccups. Forgot I have to wait for the game to finish downloading. Not going to transfer any data. Hooked up the VR and after messages about the hand controllers need charging, my headset is got the black screen of death. Turn it on and I get the vibration and PS logo. Then, nothing. Now, the game isn’t loading after Closing the game and restarting. Lovely.

I'm not quite sure what to make of the new "reprojection" feature.

It does not appear to make any impact on captured footage (it's off in that video above), but it makes VR feel more comfortable to use to me. The colors feel a bit brighter, the image looks a bit more natural, and it feels like there is more depth to what I'm looking at. The added artifacts, however, are quite pronounced.

Wait until you spin around , or drive trial mountain or Alsace....

Take it slowly... Your brain will need to recalibrate itself for a few days/weeks... Don't try to rush the process....

There is no getting around it...
VR is playing tricks with you eyes and brain...
So just did the Porsche race at Maggiore.

That downhill into the hairpin.

Need a break after that.

Reprojection does not really work on the flat output of the game so you won't notice a difference. It is essentially interpolation in time and between perspectives (this depends on the specific implmentation) to achieve the higher frame rate that the VR headset puts out. What you see on the captured footage will be restricted to the frames that are actually rendered by the console or by your display's fps it is lower. I think the base PSVR2 was 60 reprojected to 120 fps.

Is the capture footage here with PSSR on?

I had a quick race at le mans at night and just like pre patch, the stars are still flashing blurry blobs, some of them still looking like they have the rings of saturn around them(in a vertical orientation), however I do think they are slightly more in focus.

I flipped the vr reprojection switch in options to off then played a race then turned it on and raced, at one point I could hardly notice the difference and I actually restarted my pro as I thought the switch wasn't doing anything lol.

I think the cars look clearer for longer but then back to pre patch at a certain distance. At least I feel like looking at the cars now when they go past.

Final thoughts are that it's not a big difference on the pro when you switch the vr toggle on and off, I don't think it's worth pro money.

Yep, the capture footage is the same regardless of the reprojection mode. Makes it difficult to explain what it looks like to somebody that hasn't seen it with their own eyes though a PSVR2 headset.

In the example image below the scenery is moving from right to left across the screen. The sea containers in the background are moving slowly, while the track guard rail is whizzing past at high speed. With standard reprojection, the distant objects like the sea containers don't appear to blur (low resolution aside of course) but closer, faster moving objects like the guard rail get blurred from the additional interpolated frame between each 'key' frame.

containers_default.jpg

If you enable then new reprojection mode, then both the distant objects and the guard rail are not blurred, but you do get what I can only describe as a sort of pixelated blur on the border of slow moving background objects and fast moving close objects. (highlighted by the red line below)

containers_highlight.jpg

I personally don't mind the artifacts that much and tracks like the Nordschleife where you're often driving down a corridor of trees don't suffer as badly from them anyway. The additional clarity of the scenery flying past outweighs the artifact problem for me.

Buuuutttt.....

For some reason the vehicle cockpit tends to vibrate or shake rapidly with this new reprojection mode on :(
Perhaps its worse for some vehicles over others, but it's bad enough for me to prefer the current reprojection mode.

I will say that, the VR replays are SIGNIFICANTLY better with this new mode. If I had the option to enable it just for replays I'd probably do that.

Is the capture footage here with PSSR on?
PSSR is disabled in VR mode. I'd imagine it would only make things worse anyway.

Got it sorted before I stepped out.
Did the Cobra Music Rally. Initially, it looks clear. I do not see the screen door filter from PS5 use. However, I did see the ghosting. Parked the car before time ran out and everything was clear.

While driving, all the gauges were clear and legible. I caught up with the AE86 and Mini. Stayed with them sud by side for the beginning of the lap. The Mini looked good.
A couple times it looked ghosted, but I stayed focused on through corners and into the first tunnel. Entering and exiting the long tunnel, the distance rendering looked fine.
Looking to the side at the trees, I guess it's still the 3D rendering how the trees move/spin when driving by.

When I get home I'll obviously out it through its paces with my garage cars. It looks clearer and smoother, but like some have said not leaps and bounds. Initially.

I'll have to read through what some have suggested to do as far as visual settings.
