Is it me, or do people give out SZ's and cool's way to easily? I understand people having different taste when it comes to cars, but c'mon, nearly every car that gets posted has a huge amount of Sub Zeroes, considering that in Top Gear (from where the cool wall was inspired) only a handful of cars get rated that high.

To me, kei cars are usually seriously uncool. The gullwing doors bring this up to a regular uncool.

This is what happens when a manufacturer's engineering department gets hold of a list of regulations and says "Bollocks to that, let's make a sports car".

And when the lead engineer is a good enough politician that he can talk marketing into green lighting it.

Unfortunately you're preaching to the deaf.

Or trying to teach 7th grade biology to Rick Perry.

It's a sub-zero from me, the typical V8 Neanderthal crowd's butthurt pushed it over the line.

My brother had a Honda Beat until recently, and he decided to join a kei cars club. One of the members there happened to have a silver AZ-1 (one of not very many in the UK), and my brother would always talk about how cool it was. I didn't believe him until I went to a big meet on a really hot day, and while queueing we had the guy behind us, big sunhat to keep the sun out of his eyes, and the driver side gullwing door right open to keep cool. Sub zero.

Who measures engines in cubic inches anymore?

Other than W&N and people like him, it's mostly just the people who feel a need to point out how an engine has too many of them, which is just as idiotic and biased, only coming from the other direction. Not directed at you or anyone in particular, just something I've seen a lot of people doing in these threads for a long time. If an engine makes enough power to move the car it's in well, its size doesn't really matter either way.

Anyway...

Uncool. I'm not fond of Kei cars in the first place--I understand their purpose, but the stereotypical lunchbox styling is even less appealing than "generic 4 door sedan"--so that colored my views on this one; as these cars go, this is cool. Unfortunately, in the wider car world, it's only an uncool for a variety of factors, but mostly because just about anyone approaching 6' tall would look ridiculous getting in or out of it. It looks like someone took a Ferrari and shrunk it in the wash. As a kei car I like it...as a regular car it's more cute than cool.

Sub-zeros and seriously-uncools a little too easily, perhaps, but not "cool". It's entirely possible for lots of cars to be either cool or uncool. Arguably, every single car on the road is either cool or uncool.

To play devil's advocate (having seen how you've voted) I'd say people give out "mehs" too easily - it's the thing they pick when they neither really know anything about the car, nor really think about whether a car might actually be cool or uncool.

Don't try to build a sports car unless you can put horsepower in it. This doesn't, and it's also ugly. Seriously Uncool. Not even gullwing doors can save it.

Protest votes and result swinging I'd guess! Pretty much as bad as 'automatic ....' votes as far as I'm concerned though.

You don't need to have many hp be a sports car :)

Anyways, Absolute Zero.

I love the design, so agressive for such a small car. And this thing can rev. Up to 9,000rpm I think! (please correct me if I'm wrong) It's one of my favorite kei cars of all time, right behind the Honda Beat.

I can understand why the usual group of people would hate on this car. They grew up around muscle cars. They like big, roaring V8s doing burnouts on long straight roads. If I grew up around stuff like that, I'd be the same.

You cannot poosibly look cool coming out of that tiny car... seriously comic and laughable, but certainly not cool...

Cool car in a void, but when standing around reality, this car isnt the regular size, it would be a laughin stock.

Would it look cool if This car was in a "regular" size?
I doubt it...

But it does have horsepower. And not even one or two. Or even three. 63 horses is a lot of horses. A whole herd. More than you could possibly imagine fitting in an area the size of a kei-car's engine bay!

My truck hasover three times that figure, and I don't think my truck has much power.

Why do sports cars need so much horsepower?

Because sports cars are supposed to be fast. That's the difference between coupes and sports cars; sports cars are supposed to have more power.

It's also a truck, no suspension and the weight of a small tank.

In a twisty road this is car fast, you don't need any power on a mountain road.

Large engines and floppy chassis are for people who can't drive, so they have to do all their racing in a straight line.

Uncool. It's nice to look at, might be fun to drive but, it's too small for me to fit normally in one and I'm not sure many non car people would appreciate it, they would probably just laugh at you.

No, they're supposed to be 'sporty'. The clue is in the name. And a coupe is something totally different.

Low weight and low power works as well as heavy weight and an excess of power, when it comes to having fun.

Again, I feel the need to point out that its all relative. Your truck probably weighs three times as much as this as well, hence why it needs three times the power. To lug it all around. Hence why it doesn't seem like it has too much power.

Supercars are designed to be fast. Sports cars are designed to be just that - sporty. They deal well with corners and make the driver have a good time whilst driving. If 'sports cars' were rated by pure power, one would have to wonder why Miatas, GT86s and Lotus Elises are big sellers (the latter one less so, but its still selling pretty well, all things considered).

If they didn't asked silly money for the ones I checked out before buying the Daihatsu, I would have one of these as a daily driver. To replace my 330hp V8. Yup. You can drive a tiny sportscar and also have a fat heavy v8.

And I would still look cool while climbing out the tiny AZ-1.

Cool. Very solid cool.

Not sub-zero but a high Cool.

Why? It's one nice looking kei car and I don't usually go for them all the time but another fast reason. It's not just cute but it was featured in GT2. while they're kinda slow, I liked them.

And sorry OP, while you thought this was going for SU, I don't think many will hear ya, like me. Well, some did, but this is quite cool in my book.

The coolest, most desirable (especially in blue) and, therefore, best kei car ever. Bar none.
I love cuteness personally - provided it's mixed with beauty.
Mazda should remake this.
Sub-Zero.

It's so much fun driving small, slow cars. You can drive them all over the place at 100% throttle and not break the speed limit. I love my Miata but the AZ1 is even better! SZ for me.

Sub-zero. Its just such a cool car. I bet most of the people who don't like it just don't like Kei cars in general. I mean, how can you hate this car?
