I'm planning on adding my own top 20 (this is harder than I expected) this week sometime and I'll rescore later this week or this weekend.

Here's my list, It's going to be fairly biased towards my favourite artists, but I am giving credit to most of Rock's essential innovators. I've based my list on a combination of my perception of an artist's talent, showmanship, lasting popularity, innovation, creativity, originality, and influence on other artists. I've also added in some side notes.

1) Led Zeppelin
2) Rush (Huge talent, rarely awknoledged for their achivements)
3) The Beatles
4) The Jimi Hendrix Experience
5) Pink Floyd
6) Elvis Presley (Possibly the single biggest influence on rock other than the Beatles)
7) Black Sabbath (They popularized metal)
8) Van Halen (Most of the 80s was spent trying to copy Eddie's style, and they were a very solid band)
9) The Who
10) Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (One of the most original artists I've ever heard)
11) Cream
12) The Doors (The kings of psychadellic music)
13) Deep Purple (Very underrated)
14) The Guess Who
15) Iron Maiden (80s metal at it's finest)
16) AC/DC (Possibly rock's best live band; tons of raw energy)
17) Queen
18) Aerosmith (70s Aerosmith; they lost their edge after they cleaned themselves up)
19) Dire Straits
20) Yes

I know it doesn't mean much, but honorable mentions go to Dream Theater, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, John Lennon solo, Wings, ZZ Top, Guns N Roses, and many others that I can't think of at the moment.

And on a side note, I nearly left Pink Floyd out of the list... :banghead:

1. Van Halen
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Joe Satriani
4. ZZ Top
5. Chuck Berry
6. The Who
7. Pink Floyd
8. Steve Vai
9. Agent Orange
10. Living Color
11. Motley Crue
12. Anthrax
13. The Replacements
14. Metallica
15. Ozzy Osbourne
16. Junior Brown
17. The Stone Roses
18. The Dead Kennedys
19. Stone Temple Pilots
20. Aerosmith

Now, SRV is kinda rock and blues. But he is my fav. So....
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
2. ZZ Top
3. Eric Clapton
4. Blue Oyster Cult (seen them in concert)
5. Neil Young
6. The Tragically Hip (Older stuff, like the album Up to Here)
7. Deep Purple
8. Rush
9. AC/DC
10. Dire Straits (is this even on the list yet?)
11. Lynyrd Skynyrd
12. Van Halen

14. BTO
15. Pink Floyd
16. The Doors
17. Supertramp
18. Steve Miller Band
19. Aerosmith
20. The Allman Brothers

You may note the omission of Led Zeppelin. I used to like them, but had them completely ruined by my brother playing it 24/7 for about 5 months. It will be months before I can even start listening to them again.

The same occurred for me with Metallica and Black Sabbath with every little "wannabe-metal" kiddie around here. But I thought this was opinions of the greatest rock bands, not everybody's favourite? Or am I mistaken?

I didn't include Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry as I thought they were too far diverted from Rock music, and more inclined with Pop music. I realise they were Rock & Roll, and two-thirds of the biggest influences on Rock music today, but if I included them, I would've had to include many, many other influential 50's Rock & Roll acts, Blues/Soul acts like Otis Redding, etc. So I stuck to more Rock-inclined acts, which I consider The Beatles and Bob Dylan to be a part of.

Just my opinion is all.

And honorable mentions to John Lennon, A Perfect Circle (APC and Tool's song and musicwriting talent is widely underrated) and Janis Joplin.

  1. U2
  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. Joy Division
  4. Beatles
  5. Jimi Hendrix
  6. They Might Be Giants
  7. Pixies
  8. Pink Floyd
  9. The Talking Heads
  10. Tool
  11. Frank Zappa
  12. Radiohead
  13. The Smiths
  14. Depeche Mode
  15. Nine Inch Nails
  16. Faith No More
  17. The Who
  18. Stone Temple Pilots
  19. Black Sabbath
  20. Pulp

A lot of older bands are badly overrated. And I'm deeply ashamed that U2 isn't in the top 5. :grumpy:

Just sayin' that bands aren't better because they recorded music 35 years ago in some BBC studio.

If the key word is influence, why isn't Chuck Berry at the top of the list?

But Metal isn't Rock, though. Rock has it's roots in Blues and Metal is supposed to be completely devoid of Blues.

At least that's how I classify it. I also think Pop is a sub-genre of Rock'n'Roll. Chuck Berry is Rock'n'Roll. I don't think he was anything great, but his influence can't be denied.

This ain't the place for this impossible argument. :sly:

I know this is an impossible argument, but this is just my sense of judgement I guess. Nothing against your opinion, I'm probably wrong here anyway.

Bands like Pantera and Metallica are Rock-influenced and semi-Rock orientated. That's why I included them, and possibly why VH1 included them. Slayer was a far-stretched choice by VH1.

If I'm not mistaken, Chuck Berry is considered by many to be the inventor of Rock 'n' Roll.

The key to this thread is whatever YOU think makes the band one of the greatest of all time. That doesn't have to be influence but it can. It could also be talent, or sound, or image, or lyrics, or just whatever it is that you really like about the band.

Metal is rock (hard rock).
Chuck Berry is definitely rock.

Kind of on-topic, kind of off-topic. Green Day was named "Best Band on the Planet" at the Kerrang! Music Awards in London. My question is: how?

I hope they know there are plenty of great bands from the 70s and 80s that are still active. Green Day has nothing on the greats from those decades.
