If only GT5 would accurately place drivers on the starting grid this wouldn't even be necessary. I don't know why the programmers couldn't get something so simple right or even put in the administration option to place drivers on the grid in a selectable, specific order.

Even if they get it right there are possible issues. Sometimes with big grids people get black screens that don't clear until after the start. Also, you don't get a good chance to change brake balance.

It's a 3 minute waste of time really... but it's a little fun too. For the F1 race where we used it first it was really cool to hear the engines come up to speed.

No real race series does a direct grid start, there's always a formation lap prior to it. Mostly to make sure that all cars lined up are working properly before the race start.

Edit: It also seems to be an advantage to use a formation lap/grid start on tracks with tight/slow first corners to make it easier to get everyone through safely.

Scott and I are in the main lounge running some laps.

(The league i race with) we change the track then put it back on the track, we do a 1Lap check race to make sure everyone can see eachother no lag etc.. then as soon that finished whoever in charge sets the time for race start etc 10 mins or 15 etc.. mics turned off etc adds to the tenseness.. an we never have any problems with random/wrong grid positions..

Would it be acceptable for me to post my ghost replay here? I've done more than 120 practice laps with my best lap being just under 1:44 but I don't know what else to do to run a faster lap. At this point I'm wondering if I'm just reinforcing a bad habit and that's what's keeping me from improving. If one of the NTSC Aliens could watch it and note where and what I need to do to improve my time It'd be much appreciated.

Yes it's fine, since the WRS TT is over. Post it and I'll/someone else will take a look.

Are you practicing online or offline?

Here's a link to the ZIP file containing the replay.

(The link above opens my publicly shared Skydrive folder. The file should be check marked when you click the link but to download it you have to click on the file that's selected called "Madrid-MustangGT-1.43.828.zip")

I've been playing offline in Practice mode.
I run with all assists off except for ABS=1
I use a wired XBox360 controller for Windows with a USB to PS3 adaptor. (RTrigger = Gas/LTrigger = Brake, Steer with left analog stick)

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

If I may ask...why do you use an xbox controller? That seems like such a hassle to rig it into the ps3, when you could just as well use a dualshock, which comes to pretty much the same thing.

DS3 triggers have a much shorter throw than the 360 controller. The longer throw gives more precise control of the application of throttle and brake. I had the controller already for use in PC racing games and the adapter was only $12 as opposed to $40-$55 for a new DS3. Switching from PS3 to PC games and back don't require me to get used to a different controller. The 360 controller is also larger so my hands don't cramp up as much as they do on a DualShock. It's not even a hassle. The adapter plugs into the USB port and the 360 controller plugs into the adapter. That's all there is to it. As far as the PS3 is concerned it thinks there's a DS3 or compatible controller connected to it.

I've not watched the replay, but the thing about this challenge is really about patience when turning. The best advice I can give without watching before hand is picking your braking points mine are;

10m before kerbing into turn 1 (20% braking until straight going into 100% braking).
Just after the 100m board down the backstraight there's a grey board I use that as braking, 100% braking.
Barrier furthest point out is braking point for the hairpin and you want to run wide to come back across.
A big rectangle shadow just near the 50m board is for the chicane, right in the middle of it.

Then there's the patience part which really is just turning in and letting the car keep turning, you may want to put the power down but just let it roll until you know you can put the power down. Bandits video is quite good if you haven't checked that out :).

"He's a pin ball wizard
There has got to be a twist.
A pin ball wizard,
S'got such a supple wrist."

For some strange reason this song came to mind when I was practicing on the course last night.

Lets just hope that's not the theme song to the race highlight video.

I want a wheel but... I'm afraid to get one. I have considerable nerve damage in my legs/feet and a lot of swelling in my feet all the time. It's actually quite difficult for me (as I have large feet to begin with) to even find shoes that fit anymore. The current pair I have is over two sizes too large just so I can get my feet in them. The fear is that I'll drop like $150 for a wheel then not be able to use the pedals for lack of feel. That being said I'm still looking at the Logitech DFGT and the Gran TurGismo paddle shifter addons.

My internet is being ridiculous today, so I'm going to have to sit this race out.

Did you cancel on the form?

If we end up with a chance of 16 drivers we need to know ASAP as it affects which lounge we can use.

PS> Wes signed up!!!! Alien fest! I may drop out and watch... no, just kidding, but the replay should be awesome.

I'm reserve, but I'll cancel anyway.

Well don't cancel if you want to run... that wasn't my intention. I just need to know if we should use my lounge... the only way we can get 16 people to run is if the owner of the lounge races.

The A lounge is setup and open for pre-race practice. I repeat... the A lounge:

GTP_3D3_A

Mics are disabled so when instructions or quali results are being announced make sure to avoid typing in the chat.

Please be sure to review the start procedures and pit entry/exit guidelines. Both are included in the details post. Without mics we're going to rely on you guys to know the setup.

We're limited to 15 drivers in the lounge... we are 15 now including reserves so it should be fine... if anyone new signs up putting us at 16 or more please note that confirmed drivers get priority. Between confirmed drivers it's first come first serve.

Good luck.

PS> Arrive early if possible... with big lounges there is a higher probability of connection problems. We'll attempt to correct connection issues / loading drivers / invisible drivers by asking drivers to exit the lobby, reset the PS3, reset the router, clear the cache and then join again -- if they arrive on time. If you arrive late and have an issue be prepared to sit this one out. You might save yourself some trouble if you do that before you join in the first place... especially if you have connection issues regularly.

PPS> We'll qualify in two groups today. 7 will go out in the first group... the top 7 on the registration list... which for now goes from w-g-e to ealirendur.

Hey BEFORE i come too late and it´s my first time to be online please give me affirmation that the race starts @ 19:00 GMT and i live near düsseldorf Germany so i have to be online at 21:00 CET ?!? When does the quali start ??? I don´t know that.. thanks for your help

Al

Quali starts in 55min from now. I would start getting online as soon as you can, to get some practice laps in, and sort out any connection issues.

Sorry but an unexcepted issue occured, i canceled the race. Wish you good luck and have fun 👍

Where is everyone, i'm in the lounge now and it is empty?
Just found out it is in lounge A.

Are you in GTP_3D3_A? EDIT: Good, looks like you found them. ;)

Good racing everyone, had a good time. Good battling Jammy. At one point I was stuck between to Aussies and to Fins. An international sandwich!
